Navy (5-0, 3-0 AAC) travels north up I-95 to take on Temple (3-2, 1-0 AAC) on Saturday at 4pmET from Lincoln Financial Field. Will the Mids or Owls cover the spread in this Navy vs. Temple prediction? Navy has won eight straight games going back to last season, while the Owls broke a two-game losing streak by defeating UTSA last week 27-21. Last season, the Mids crushed the Owls 38-21 at home from Annapolis, and they've taken four of the last five games straight up. If you are struggling to pick winners,Β you've come to the right place. We have the strongest NCAAF Predictions.Β

Navy is pushing to get into the AP Top 25, where they were ranked last season. But ultimately, their biggest goal is to beat Army at the end of the season and claim the Commander-in-Chief's Trophy. They will probably have to win out or maybe lose one game and win the AAC Championship game to get a Group of Five bid to the College Football Playoffs. Last week, the Mids struggled defensively in their 34-31 home win over Air Force. But QB Blake Horvath, normally a running QB in their Wing-T offense, completed 20 of 26 for 339 yards and ran for 130 yards on 17 carries. WR Eli Heidenreich had a huge day with eight catches for 243 yards and three TDs.

Navy's defense was another story as they gave up 211 yards on the ground and 249 in the air. The Mids also committed eight penalties for 49 yards and turned the ball over once. That was Navy's toughest game, though they struggled to beat Rice 21-13 on Sept 27. at home. Their first three wins over Tulsa, UAB and VMI were by double digits.

Horvath is having quite the season with 839 yards passing (71.9%), six TDs and three interceptions. On the ground, he leads the way with 485 yards rushing and six TDs, while FB Alex Tecza adds 379 yards and four scores. Heidenreich has 20 catches for 413 yards and four TDs, with 232 yards rushing and three scores.

The defense has really struggled against the pass this season, allowing 267.5 passing yards per game to rank 124th and they rank 111th in total defense (412ypg). On offense, they lead the nation in yards per game (613ypg) and in rushing yards per game (396.8). They rank 81st, which is not bad for the run-oriented Mids, in passing yards per game (216.3ypg).

Big Test for the Owls

Temple opened the season with a 42-10 win over UMass on the road and then beat FCS Howard 55-7. Things got a lot tougher in their next two games as they fell at home to Oklahoma (42-3) and at Georgia Tech 45-24 on Sept. 20. After a bye, the Owls opened up conference play with a 27-21 home win over UTSA. In their win over the Roadrunners on Saturday, Evan Simon threw for 180 yards (16 of 25) with two TD passes and no picks, while Hunter Smith rushed for 74 yards and a score.

Temple took the lead on a pass from Simon to Peter Clarke late in the third quarter and added a field goal with 1:57 left in the game to seal the deal. In an interesting move, the Owls moved offensive coordinator Tyler Walker from the booth to the sidelines after producing just 108 yards in the first half. In the second half, the Owls produced 219 total yards. Temple's defense held UTSA to just 70 yards rushing on 30 attempts and picked off quarterback Owen McCown twice.

K.C. Keeler has done a nice job with this program in the first part of the schedule. The former Sam Houston State, Rowan, and Delaware head coach has a 274-114-1 record overall, but winning at Temple is a difficult task. The Owls have not had an inning season since the 2019 season under Rod Carey. They've had success in the past underΒ  Matt Rhule, Al Golden and Steve Addazio. But in the previous five seasons, they went a combined 13-42. Keeler already has them at three wins, which is tied for the most in that span.

On the season, Simon is completing 59% of his passes for 805 yards with 12 TDs and no picks. Jay Ducker leads the ground attack with 349 yards rushing (5.3ypc) and two TDs. Temple is pretty balanced as they rush for 171.6 yards per game (56th) and pass for 182 yards per game (109th). On defense, they are holding teams to just 184 yards passing per game (36th), but 158 yards rushing (94th).

On the injury front, S Louis Frye (undis.) and Javier Morton (undis) are questionable.

Spread Pick for Navy vs. Temple

  • Navy -8.5

Navy had some defensive issues last week, but mainly against the pass. While Simon has been more than sold, the Owls are not very explosive offensively. They are not great against the run either, and the Mids are so tough now that Horvath has become a pretty good passer. Who do you stop? Horvath's passing game and Heidenreich as a receiver, or both players as rushers? Or do you look for Tecza up the middle? It's a very difficult offense to stop and there are only so many things you can do in practice to prepare for it.

Over/Under Pick for Navy vs Temple

  • Over 53.5

Navy is sixth in the nation in points per game at 46.8. Even Temple averages 30.2 points per game, and I know those numbers are inflated because both teams clobbered FCS squads. But Navy's defense, especially against the pass, is still a worry. Navy put up 38 points on Temple last season as these teams have played five straight overs. Expect a similar result with Temple scoring a lot more than the 11 points they produced last season
