The Midshipmen of Navy come into Tulsa with a perfect 2-0 mark following a 38-24 win over UAB in Annapolis last Saturday afternoon. It was the conference opener for Navy and marked the second straight week that the Midshipmen put up big scoring numbers. They poured in 52 points in their season opener against VMI. Navy has now started each of the last two seasons at 2-0, the first time that has happened since the 2016 and 2017 seasons.

"I am so happy to get a win," Head coach Brian Newberry.  "I was proud of our team for finding a way at the end. It was sloppy at times, but good football teams find a way to win. We struggled defensively tonight. I don't think that's any secret, especially in the first half, but offensively, we were in rhythm. We didn't punt in the first half, scored on every possession. I thought we played really well offensively.

Quarterback Blake Horvath had a fine two-way game, throwing for 168 yards and a touchdown while running for 72 yards and two scores. Running back Alex Tecza also had a big day, rushing for 111 yards and a touchdown on 15 carries. In all, Navy compiled 463 yards of total offense, including 295 on the ground.

The Navy defense struggled in the first half, allowing UAB to score on each of its first-half possessions. The second half would be a different story, however. The Midshipmen held UAB without a point after halftime. Landon Robinson led Navy with 10 tackles, including one tackle for loss. Navy gave up 413 yards of total offense, but just 92 on the ground. They finished with two turnovers, interceptions by Phillip Hamilton and MarcAnthony Parker.

Navy comes into this game ranked 27th in the country in points per game. The Midshipmen are 17th in rushing and 97th in passing. Defensively, the team is 69th in points allowed per game. They are 42nd against the run and just 125th against the pass. Navy ranks third in the country in turnover margin and 99th in penalties per game. They are 40th in the country in time of possession.

Key Injuries: RB Tyler Bradley is out. RB Victor Listori and WR Casey Smith are questionable.

Tulsa readies for AAC opener

The Tulsa Golden Hurricane now kicks off the conference portion of their schedule after going 1-1 in non-conference games. Last week, they lost a tight 21-14 game at New Mexico State. The Golden Hurricane were driving for the potential tying score when quarterback Baylor Hayes’ pass was picked off in the end zone.

“Our expectation is to play simple, play fast, play hard, and play with our hair on fire — harder than anybody else in the country.” Head coach Tre Lamb said about his team heading into the season.

Hayes led the Golden Hurricane, going 13-of-16 for 129 yards and a touchdown. He also rushed for 22 yards on three carries with a touchdown. Both touchdowns were the first in the collegiate career of Hayes. Wide receiver Zion Booker led the team with eight catches for 51 yards. Running back Dominic Richardson finished with 93 yards on 20 carries. He also caught three balls for an additional 20 yards. Overall, the Golden Hurricane had 375 yards of total offense. They committed two turnovers in the game, one on an interception and the other on a fumble.

The defense gave up 291 yards of total offense to New Mexico State. They had nine tackles for loss in the game, including two sacks. Ray Coney led the Golden Hurricane with eight tackles. He also had a pass breakup and a quarterback hit in the contest.

Tulsa comes into this game ranked 100th in the country in points per game. They are 65th in rushing and 59th in passing. The Golden Hurricane rank 55th in the nation in points allowed per game. They are sixth against the run and 91st against the pass. Tulsa is just 91st in turnover margin thus far and 62nd in penalties per game. They are 81st in the country in time of possession.

Key Injuries: WR Jeremiah Ballard is questionable.

Point Spread pick for Tulsa

  • Tulsa +13.5 (4 units)

Tulsa comes into this game ranked sixth in the country against the run. That number is critical against a Navy team that can chew up yards on the ground and control the clock. Tulsa also has an edge in penalties per game, ranked 62nd in the nation, while the Midshipmen are just 99th in the country in penalties per game. That will work in Tulsa’s favor, forcing Navy to face some potential 3rd and long situations and putting them in obvious passing downs. Navy is also just 125th in the country against the pass through two games, an area in which the Golden Hurricane can exploit. Navy is the better team, but I’m taking the points here in a game that could come down to the final possession.

Take New Mexico State +10.5

Over/Under Pick for New Mexico State at La Tech

  • Over 53.5

Navy has scored over 80 points in its first two games this season. They have an efficient offense that is ranked #1 in the red zone thus far. The Golden Hurricane will likely need to keep pace in scoring with Navy, and can do so through the air on Saturday. They’ll take advantage of a shaky Navy secondary and keep this game close through explosive plays in the passing game.

Take the Over.
