Horvath struggles as Navy suffers their first loss
It was a long shot, but Navy QB Blake Horvath was putting up some strong numbers, rushing and passing, that he might be in the running for the Heisman Trophy. Navy probably needed to go undefeated for him just to be in that conversation, and that ended abruptly on Saturday when the Mids were beaten by North Texas 31-17. Horvath completed 8 of 14 passes for 80 yards, but had two interceptions. He did rush for 112 yards and a TD, but Navy lost the turnover battle (-3) and committed eight penalties for 55 yards. They were still able to rush for 311 yards, but struggled to finish drives
Horvath is still having an outstanding season with 1,143 yards passing, seven TDs and five picks (63.6%) in their Wing-T offense. He also leads the team in rushing with 926 yards and 13 touchdowns. Slotback Eli Heidenreich adds 342 yards rushing and 31 catches for 575 yards with seven overall touchdowns.
Navy has the nation's top rushing offense at 317.3 yards per game. They rank 131st in passing at 149 yards per game, but that's pretty high for an option-style attack. On defense, the Mids have struggled against the pass, allowing 253.8 yards per game (106th). If there is a lot of precipitation, they should be in decent shape against the run as they allow 126.3 yards per game on the ground.

Playoffs? Notre Dame rolls after losing to Texas A&M
Notre Dame has to sweep the rest of their games to have a chance at the College Football Playoffs. Early close losses to Miami (FL) and Texas A&M didn't help their cause, but they are on a six-game winning streak, with their latest a 25-10 road win over Boston College last week. They weren't sharp against the Eagles and needed a 94-yard touchdown run from Jeremiyah Love after an interception that propelled the Irish to the win. It was an ugly performance as the Irish were held scoreless in the first quarter and led just 12-7 at the half as a 28.5 point favorite against a 1-7 BC team. QB C.J. Carr completed 18 of 25 for 299 yards with two TDs, while Love ran for 136 yards and two scores. The Eagles were able to throw the ball on the Irish (269 yards) and had the ball for over 35 minutes.
Carr is completing 66.5% of his passes for 2,057 yards with 16 TDs and four interceptions. Love leads in rushing with 894 yards and 11 touchdowns, while Jadarian Price adds 521 yards and eight scores. Jordan Faison leads all receivers with 39 catches for 518 yards.
Notre Dame is one of the most balanced teams in the nation, ranking 36th in rushing yards per game (187.6) and 28th in passing yards per game (274). They allow just 89.6 yards rushing per game to rank 11th in the nation, but they struggle against the pass (258.6ypg) to rank 114th, which shouldn't be a huge problem in this game.
No major key injuries, though the defensive line is banged up, including DL Gabriel Rubio (13 tackles, 2 sacks).
Navy vs. Notre Dame pick
Spread Pick for Navy vs. Notre Dame
- Navy +26.5 (4 units)
The weather will be cold and possibly rainy, which is a good thing for the Mids and their run-heavy offense. Expect Horvath to bounce back after an off game and even though Navy lost big last season to Notre Dame, he was able to put up 129 rushing yards. Their biggest weakness is in the secondary and precipitation should certainly slow down Carr and the passing game.Β They are solid against the run and will make this a fast game with a lot of running from both sides, so they will cover. The Irish have won six straight, but did not look impressive in their last two games and they have a pretty soft schedule.
- Under 55.5 (5 units)
Navy is normally a high-scoring team, but they are running (pun intended) into one of the best run defenses in the nation in a cold and rainy Notre Dame Stadium. Notre Dame wins with a strong running game and defense, which has helped them go under in four straight games.
