Nevada routed SJSU to break out of its funk
The Nevada Wolf Pack (2-8; 4-5-1 ATS; 4-6 O/U) put an end to their seven-game losing streak last Saturday. Playing as 9.5-point home underdogs, the Wolf Pack trounced San Jose State 55-10 for their first MWC victory of the season.

Nevada outgained SJSU 413-270 in total yards and won the turnover battle 5-0. The Wolf Pack picked off Walker Eget three times, while Nevada’s freshman Carter Jones threw for 195 yards and two touchdowns. Nevada racked up 218 rushing yards, and senior RB Caleb Ramseur led the way with 20 carries for 128 yards and a touchdown.
"Handling success like a pro, which means doing the things that lead to success and not patting yourself on the back," Nevada coach Jeff Choate said. "Getting up on Monday morning and getting in the training room and taking care of your body. Getting a little extra film study and making sure your preparation and your intensity level are appropriate.”
During their ugly losing streak, the Wolf Pack have surpassed a 20-point spread just once. Back in Week 8, they lost at New Mexico 24-22. Two weeks ago, Nevada lost at Utah State 51-14, and Jones was benched after going 1-of-6 for minus-1 yards and two interceptions.
Jones has thrown for 856 yards, five touchdowns, and eight interceptions across eight appearances this season. Ramseur has amassed 662 yards from scrimmage and six touchdowns, while senior TE Jett Carpenter has recorded 306 receiving yards and a touchdown.
Nevada scores just 18.1 points per game (125th in the nation) and allows 28.1 points in return (tied for 92nd). Keep your eyes on linebackers Dylan Labarbera and Jonathan Maldonado, who have combined for 11.5 sacks and 25 tackles for loss thus far.
RB Herschel Turner (undisclosed) is questionable for this game. He has 318 yards rushing.
Wyoming is desperate for a win
The Wyoming Cowboys (4-6; 5-5 ATS; 2-8 O/U) have won their previous two home contests against San Jose State 35-28 and Colorado State 28-0. But in their last two outings, the Cowboys have suffered defeats at San Diego State 24-7 and Fresno State 24-3. Now, the Cowboys have to win their final two games of the season if they want to go bowling.
Last Saturday, the Cowboys mustered just 184 yards against Fresno State. They went 3-for-15 on 3rd down and 1-for-3 on 4th down while posting 32 carries for 107 yards. Sophomore QB Kaden Anderson completed only six of his 23 passing attempts, throwing for 64 yards and an interception.
"Offensively, we couldn't string together enough plays in a row without just bogging ourselves down. And there's a lot of different layers to it," Wyoming coach Jay Sawvel said, taking some of the blame of his embattled quarterback. "We've got to coach better, and that's where it starts from."
Three weeks ago, the Cowboys racked up just 185 total yards at San Diego State, and Anderson threw for 93 yards and three interceptions. After that ugly display, Sawvel decided to remove offensive coordinator Jay Johnson from play-calling duties and promote wide receivers coach Jovon Bouknight.
Anderson has tossed for 1,791 yards, 11 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions this season. Sophomore wideout Chris Durr leads the receiving corps with 39 catches for 435 yards and four touchdowns, while freshman RB Samuel Harris has amassed 734 yards from scrimmage and a touchdown.
The Cowboys score 17.8 points per game (128th in the country) and surrender 20.6 points in return (33rd). Senior DL Ben Florentine leads their defensive unit with five sacks and seven tackles for loss.
Nevada vs. Wyoming Pick
Spread Pick for Nevada vs. Wyoming
- Nevada +6.5 (5 units)
The Cowboys are arguably a better defensive team than Nevada, but Wyoming’s offense has been so bad this season that I can’t lay 6.5 points with the hosts in this game.
Wyoming’s passing defense is excellent. But the Cowboys’ run D has some flaws, and Wyoming allows 168.4 rushing yards per game (100th in the country) and 4.6 yards per carry (tied for 97th). Nevada will pound the rock, and don’t forget that the Wolf Pack can use QB Chubba Purdy in their ground game. Purdy has rushed 83 times for 388 yards and three touchdowns this season.
Nevada allows 150.1 rushing yards per game (tied for 74th) and 4.0 yards per carry (tied for 54th). The Wolf Pack just recorded three interceptions in Week 12, and they must be fired up following that thrashing of San Jose State. I expect Nevada to keep it close in Week 13.
Over/Under Pick for Nevada vs. Wyoming
- Under 40.5 (5 units)
The bookies expect a low-scoring affair, and I’m a bit surprised that the line is still sitting at 40.5 points. Nevada’s offense erupted against SJSU last week, but Wyoming hasn’t allowed more than 24 points in four straight outings.
Given the way the Cowboys have been playing lately, I can only look for a proper low-scoring game. Each of Wyoming’s last three contests has seen 31 or fewer points on the scoreboard. The under is 11-2 in Wyoming’s last 13 games overall, and it is 6-1 in the Cowboys’ past seven outings at home. Also, nine of Nevada’s previous 13 games overall have gone under the total.
