Aggies hope to stay perfect

The New Mexico State Aggies roll into Joe Alliet Stadium with a perfect 2-0 mark after downing Tulsa at home, 21-14, last week. The two teams went back and forth before the Aggies scored with 3:23 left in the third quarter. The Aggies' defense came up big in the final drive to secure the team’s first 2-0 start in a decade.

"The energy was really good," Head coach Tony Sanchez said about his team coming into the season. "I feel like we're a much longer, more athletic team. I feel like we're a deeper team. We're better at the quarterback spot, which we needed to be. We got some great leadership and veterans like (linebacker Tyler Martinez) over here, and I'm excited about the season. We put a lot of work in."

Quarterback Logan Fife led the offense, completing 28-of-45 passes for 252 yards and two touchdowns. He was also the team’s leading rusher with 12 carries for 28 yards. Wide receiver Donovan Faupel led the receiving group with a career-high eight catches for 78 yards, including the game-winning touchdown grab. Jackson Owens added four catches for 39 yards, his highest totals as a Division I player. In all, the Aggies had 291 yards of total offense.

The Aggies’ defense perfected the bend but don’t break approach. They held Tulsa to just 14 points, the second straight week they’ve been able to hold the opposition to 14 points or less, and the first time since 2022. Naeten Mitchell led the team with eight tackles. Jamall Thompson Jr. was the late-game hero, picking off a pass to squelch the final drive for Tulsa. The Aggies allowed 375 yards of total offense.

The Aggies are now 75th in the nation in points per game. They are ranked just 133rd on the ground, but are 43rd in the country through the air. Defensively, the Aggies are 27th in the nation in points allowed per game. They are 68th against the run and 75th against the pass. The Aggies are 24th in turnover margin and 99th in penalties per game. The team is 56th in the country in time of possession.

Key Injuries: WR TK King and WR AJ Williams are doubtful.

La Tech looks for a win in first conference matchup

The La Tech Bulldogs will look to get back in the win column after putting a scare into LSU last week on the road, before falling 23-7 at Tiger Stadium. The Bulldogs slowed down the potent LSU offense but, ultimately, couldn’t put up points against the Tigers' defense. The loss dropped the Bulldogs to 1-1 on the season as they get set to open up Conference USA play this week at home.

"I love how hard our kids played. I thought our kids played really to the standard of what we've become to know of how they play in terms of they played fast, and they played really physical. I think they flew around tonight. I was proud of that effort. I think that our execution offensively was not where it needs to be for us to be able to win a conference championship and I know that we'll get that fixed. I think the disappointing thing from an execution standpoint was we didn't play as well on special teams, not as well as we played the prior week. We really made some critical errors and talking to our kids this week: against a team, any game, you have to maximize your opportunities. When you don't maximize on those opportunities, even late in the third quarter when we had the opportunity to get the ball back on punt, you're not going to get those back. I think a team with this type of talent is going to really maximize their opportunities.” Head coach Sonny Cumbie said about his team’s efforts against the nationally ranked Tigers.

The Bulldogs had a hard time with the LSU defense on Saturday. They were only able to get into LSU’s side of the field three times in the game. Each time, the team was turned away and forced to punt. La Tech finally crossed the goal line late in the fourth quarter thanks to a 33-yard touchdown pass from backup quarterback Blake Baker to wideout Devin Gandy. The team finished with just 154 yards of total offense against the stout Tigers’ defense.

The La Tech defense was up to the challenge against the Tigers. They held them to just two touchdowns, while forcing the Tigers into three field goals. Overall, the Bulldogs had eight tackles for loss. Mekhi Mason led the team with 11 tackles, including a sack. The team had three sacks in all. Michael Richard forced the lone turnover of the game with an interception of LSU QB Garrett Nussmeier.

La Tech is ranked just 124th in the country in points per game. They are ranked 126th on the ground and 125th through the air. On the defensive end, the Bulldogs are ranked 62nd in points allowed per game. They are 61st in the country against the run and 80th against the pass. The Bulldogs are 24th in the nation in turnover margin but just 134th in penalties per game. The team ranks 127th in the country in time of possession.

Key Injuries: WR Jay Wilkerson is questionable.

Spread pick for New Mexico State vs. Louisiana Tech

  • New Mexico State +10.5 (4 units)

The Bulldogs return home after a physical battle with a superior LSU team. New Mexico State comes off a tough victory of its own against Tulsa. The key to this game will be New Mexico State’s ability to possess the football. They are 56th in the country in time of possession. That is far superior to the Bulldogs, ranked just 127th in time of possession. The Aggies will need to possess the ball through a controlled passing attack. They are 43rd in the country in passing, which will give them an edge against the Bulldogs’ 80th-ranked pass defense. Both teams protect the ball well, tied for 24th in the country in turnover margin. Time of possession will be critical for the Aggies and should give them the edge, getting over ten points in this contest.

Over/Under Pick for New Mexico State at La Tech

  • Under 43.5

Both teams are in the bottom half of the nation in points per game. Louisiana Tech is ranked just 124th in the country in points per game. They are below average both in rushing and passing. They have also struggled in the red zone this season, ranked just 131st in the country. New Mexico State is ranked just 75th in the country in points per game. They will likely have to lean on their passing game, ranked just 133rd on the ground. Both teams possess the ball well, so neither team will likely be playing with a short field.
