Tar Heels Seek to Even Record
North Carolina started strong in the opener against TCU but was unable to maintain that momentum and found themselves on the wrong side of a beating in the opener. Bill Belichick looks to rebound from the worst loss of his coaching career as his team heads on the road. Against TCU, North Carolina went 83 yards in seven plays off the opening kickoff and scored a touchdown. That was the high water mark for the Tar Heels, who gave up the next 41 points to get blown out in the contest. North Carolina was outgained 542-222 in total offense, gave up 29 first downs while picking up 10 and lost time of possession by a 32:09 to 27:51 margin. The Tar Heels turned the ball over three times, including a scoop-six and a pick-six, while forcing just one takeaway in the loss.
Gio Lopez, who was named the starter during summer camp, was four of 10 passing for 69 yards and an interception. He also lost a fumble that was returned for a score and was knocked out of the game with a back injury. It’s unclear if he’ll take the field here. Max Johnson hit nine of 11 passes for 103 yards and a score after coming on in relief. Caleb Hood led the run game with 10 carries for 31 yards and a touchdown. Benjamin Hall (six carries, 22 yards) and Davion Gause (five carries, seven yards) were held in check in their efforts. Jordan Shipp led the team with four receptions for 84 yards. Javarius Green (three catches, 57 yards) and Gause (three grabs, eight yards) were the only other players with more than one reception. Rece Verhoff hit both his extra point attempts while not attempting a field goal in the game.
Charlotte Looking to Pull Out Home Win
Charlotte struggled in Tim Albin’s debut after spending the last few seasons as the head coach at Ohio. The 49ers looked a lot like the team that went 3-7 before Biff Poggi was fired with two games left last season and hope to turn things around here. Against Appalachian State, Charlotte led 3-0 after the opening quarter before giving up 27 unanswered points to trail 27-3 after three quarters. The 49ers failed to get closer than 16 the rest of the way as they went down in defeat. Charlotte was destroyed 586-218 in total offense, gave up 32 first downs while picking up 15, lost time of possession by a 33:58 to 26:02 margin and turned the ball over twice while forcing just one takeaway in the contest.
Conner Harrell completed 13 of 24 passes for 142 yards with one touchdown and one interception. He was second on the team in the run game as he carried eight times for 22 yards in the loss. Grayson Loftis misfired on his lone pass attempt in the game. CJ Stokes led the 49ers in the run game as he carried the ball 15 times for 49 yards. Nine players caught passes for Charlotte in the game. Justin Olson (56 yards), E.Jai Mason (29 yards, TD), Milles Burris (22 yards) and Stokes (six yards) each caught two balls to share the team lead. Liam Boyd did not attempt an extra point in the contest but hit his lone field goal attempt from 42 yards.
North Carolina vs. Charlotte Pick
Spread Pick for UNC vs. Charlotte
- North Carolina Tar Heels -13 (4 units)
Neither team looked overly impressive in week 1 as both were blown out by at least 23 points. North Carolina is trying to get up to speed with a team that has 70 new faces on the roster from a season ago. The Tar Heels looked good on their opening drive offensively and if they can build off that, they could generate some points against a Charlotte squad that simply isn’t that good. The 49ers are at home, but they looked rather listless against Appalachian State. North Carolina may be a mediocre team, but they’re still a Power Four squad. Meanwhile, Charlotte is a weak mid-major squad. If North Carolina is going to get on track, this is where it starts. Take the Tar Heels here and don’t be surprised to see Johnson under center in this one.
Over/Under Pick for North Carolina vs. Charlotte
- Under 49.5 (4 units)
The two offenses that will take the field in this contest combined to put up a measly 25 points in week 1. North Carolina’s offense gave up as many points (14) as they scored in the loss to TCU in the opener. The Tar Heels had a combined 62 points in their opener to surpass the number of 54. North Carolina saw the under post an 8-5 mark in their 13 games last season. The Tar Heels saw the under post a 5-1 mark in their six games on the road in 2024. Charlotte combined for 45 points in their loss to Appalachian State to fall under the number of 48.5 set by the sportsbooks. Last season, the 49ers saw the over hit in eight of 12 games, though they split their six home contests. Don’t look for big offensive showings from either side here.
