North Texas comes in scorching hot at 3–0, and is fresh off a 59–10 dismantling of Washington State that showcased their offensive depth and precision. Quarterback Drew Mestemaker was nearly flawless, completing 24-of-29 passes for 211 yards and four touchdowns. Makenzie McGill added 67 rushing yards on just nine carries, and the Mean Green averaged 5.6 yards per rush while racking up 410 total yards. Through three games, they’re averaging 47.7 points per game and rank top-15 nationally in scoring offense. The balance is real—nine passing touchdowns, nine rushing scores—and they’ve turned the ball over just once all season.

Defensively, North Texas has been just as impressive. They’re allowing only 13.3 points per game and rank ninth in total defense, giving up just 216.3 yards per contest. The run defense has been stout, allowing just 2.7 yards per carry and 91.7 rushing yards per game, while the secondary has held opponents to a 55.5% completion rate and just one passing touchdown. The Mean Green have also been disciplined, committing only 16 penalties for 146 yards across three games. If they can maintain that level of control and efficiency against Army’s run-heavy scheme, they’ll be in position to dictate tempo and force the Black Knights out of their comfort zone.

Mestemaker’s poise and accuracy have elevated the offense, and his connection with Miles Coleman and Wyatt Young gives North Texas a reliable short-to-intermediate passing game. McGill’s burst and vision have opened up play-action opportunities, and the offensive line has kept Mestemaker upright and clean. Against an Army defense that’s allowing 25.5 points per game and ranks 91st nationally, the Mean Green should be able to move the ball consistently. The key will be finishing drives and staying ahead of the chains—something they’ve done with ease so far.

Army Stuns Kansas State On The Road

Army enters at 1–1 after a gritty 24–21 win over Kansas State, where they leaned heavily on their signature ground game. Quarterback Noah Short threw just one pass for 52 yards but added 61 rushing yards on 10 carries, while Cale Hellums carried the ball a staggering 41 times for 124 yards and two touchdowns. The Black Knights ran 82 plays and controlled possession, grinding out 237 rushing yards on 70 attempts. That’s the blueprint: slow the game down, chew clock, and keep opposing offenses on the sideline. They’re averaging 258.5 rushing yards per game—top-10 nationally—and will look to impose that identity again on Saturday.

But Army’s margin for error is thin. They’re scoring just 25.5 points per game and rank 84th in scoring offense, with limited explosiveness through the air. The defense has been solid but not dominant, allowing 295 yards per game and struggling to get off the field on third down. They’ve allowed 25.5 points per game and rank 70th against the run, which could be a problem against a North Texas team that’s shown it can win in the trenches. If Army can’t control tempo or force early stops, they’ll be forced into a style of play that doesn’t suit their personnel.

Hellums is the workhorse, and he’ll need another monster outing to keep Army in this one. Short’s mobility adds a layer of unpredictability, but the passing game remains a non-factor unless they fall behind. Brady Anderson and Samari Howard offer some receiving upside, but Army’s best chance is to dominate time of possession and keep the game low-scoring. Against a North Texas team that’s clicking on both sides of the ball, the Black Knights will need to play mistake-free football and win the field position battle to stay competitive.

North Texas vs. Army Pick

North Texas vs. Army Spread Pick

  • North Texas -2.5 (5 Units)

North Texas -2.5 is a sharp play with multiple angles working in your favor. Head coach Eric Morris has a strong track record in this exact setup—7-1 ATS when facing a team coming off both a straight-up and ATS win—which speaks to his ability to keep his squad focused and prepared against overvalued opponents. Army fits that mold perfectly after their emotional 24–21 win over Kansas State, where they ran 82 plays and leaned heavily on Cale Hellums for 41 carries. That kind of workload, combined with a short turnaround, sets up a classic letdown spot.

Meanwhile, North Texas is rolling. They’ve covered twice already this season and are averaging 47.7 points per game while allowing just 13.3. Drew Mestemaker has been surgical, and the defense ranks top-10 nationally in yards allowed. Army’s one-dimensional offense will need to grind out long drives to keep pace, but North Texas has allowed just 2.7 yards per carry and has the speed to close gaps quickly. If the Mean Green jump out early, Army doesn’t have the passing game to chase. With Morris’s ATS edge and Army’s emotional dip, North Texas is well-positioned to cover and control.

North Texas vs. Army Over/Under Pick

  • Under 50.5 (4 Units)

Under 50.5 sets up well given the clash in offensive identities and the likely pace of play. Army’s entire blueprint revolves around draining the clock—they ran 82 plays last week, 70 of them on the ground—and they’ll aim to limit possessions and keep North Texas’s explosive offense off the field. That kind of tempo naturally suppresses scoring opportunities, especially if Army strings together long drives that end in field goals or clock-chewing touchdowns. On the other side, North Texas has been electric offensively, but they’re also facing a team that ranks top-10 in time of possession and bottom-tier in pace. The Mean Green defense has quietly been elite, allowing just 13.3 points per game and ranking ninth nationally in total defense. If they hold serve and Army sticks to its grind-it-out script, this game could stay well under the number—even if North Texas builds a lead.
