North Texas vs Indiana Picks and Prediction for Saturday, September 5, 2026

By: David Anicetti Published 09/03/2026, 12:15 AM ET

The North Texas Mean Green visit the No. 6 Indiana Hoosiers at Memorial Stadium, with the opening kickoff at 12:00 PM ET, televised on FOX. North Texas finished 12-2 last season, reaching the American Conference Championship before beating San Diego State 49-47 in its bowl game. Indiana went 16-0, won the Big Ten and completed its national championship season with a 27-21 victory over Miami. The Hoosiers are 40.5-point favorites at -112, with North Texas +40.5 at -108. The total remains 55.5, although the Over price has moved from -118 to -115. Saturday’s matchup between the defending national champions and a rebuilt North Texas roster creates several angles for our free NCAAF picks.

North Texas Mean Green Rebuild After 12-Win Season

North Texas finished 2025 with one of the country’s highest-scoring attacks, producing 7,174 total yards and 84 touchdowns. The Mean Green won four of their final five games, scoring 49 against San Diego State, 52 against Temple, 56 against Rice and 53 against UAB. However, head coach Eric Morris left for Oklahoma State and took several important players with him. New coach Neal Brown inherited a roster that could feature transfers at nearly every starting position.

Quarterback Tayven Jackson takes over after previous stops at Tennessee, Indiana and UCF. Jackson has thrown 16 touchdowns and 14 interceptions during four college seasons. Running back Jahiem White rushed for more than 1,600 yards and 11 touchdowns during his first two years at West Virginia, while Nick Osho adds another backfield option. North Texas lost 17 key offensive players through the portal, and the offensive line has been largely reconstructed. The defense faces similar changes, with Terrell Washington the only notable returning contributor from last year.

Indiana Hoosiers Open Their National Title Defense

Indiana finished a perfect 16-0 last season and scored 666 points while allowing only 187. The Hoosiers closed the year by beating Purdue 56-3, Ohio State 13-10, Alabama 38-3, Oregon 56-22 and Miami 27-21. Curt Cignetti starts his third season at Indiana with a 27-2 record at the school. The offense loses Fernando Mendoza but adds former TCU quarterback Josh Hoover, who threw for more than 9,600 yards and 71 touchdowns across his last three seasons.

Hoover works behind an experienced offensive line featuring tackles Carter Smith and Adedamola Ajani. Wide receiver Charlie Becker averaged 20 yards per reception on 34 catches last season, while Michigan State transfer Nick Marsh recorded 100 receptions for 1,311 yards and nine touchdowns across two years. Indiana’s defense also returns major production after ranking fourth nationally in total defense and second in scoring defense. Linebackers Isaiah Jones and Rolijah Hardy combined for 180 tackles, 15 sacks and 30 tackles for loss in 2025.

Key to the Game: Josh Hoover Against a Rebuilt North Texas Defense

Hoover gets an attractive first assignment as Indiana’s starting quarterback. North Texas could replace almost its entire defensive starting lineup, with the Mean Green relying heavily on transfers to rebuild every level. Hoover already has extensive college experience and joins an offense with proven protection and several receiving options. North Texas does have potential pass rushers in Udoka Ezeani and Davion Rhodes, but the new defensive group has little experience playing together. If Hoover avoids the interception problems that followed him at TCU, Indiana should create scoring chances throughout the afternoon.

North Texas vs Indiana Game Pick

  • Indiana -40.5 (-112)

Indiana has the talent and experience to create a large margin against a North Texas roster rebuilt almost entirely through the transfer portal. The Hoosiers scored 666 points during their 16-0 championship season and return a strong offensive line around Josh Hoover. North Texas lost 17 key offensive players through the portal and also replaces nearly its entire defensive lineup. Indiana should dominate the line of scrimmage and create short fields. At Memorial Stadium, the play is Indiana -40.5 against the Mean Green on Saturday.

North Texas vs Indiana Over/Under Pick

  • Over 55.5 (-115)

The 55.5 total can be reached even if North Texas struggles to score consistently. Indiana scored 666 points across 16 games last season and topped 50 points in two of its final five contests. North Texas also finished 2025 with 49 points against San Diego State after scoring at least 52 in three straight regular-season games before the American title game. Indiana has enough offensive firepower to push this number upward. At 55.5 points, the play is over in Bloomington on Saturday afternoon at home.
