Northern Illinois Earns First MAC Win
The Northern Illinois Huskies are targeting their second straight win. Northern Illinois was 2-0 to begin the season, but then went on to drop six straight games due to meager offensive production. This includes a 6-3 loss against San Diego State. They lost 48-21 to Ohio earlier this month and rebounded with a 21-7 home win against Ball State in their recent action, improving to 1-3 in conference play. They were 6.5-point favorites in that one. The Huskies have covered in just one of their past five games.
Josh Holst only attempted six passes for 65 yards last week. The sophomore QB has recorded 602 passing yards and a 4:3 TD to INT ratio on the season. He has added 141 rushing yards. Brady Davidson has also seen action under center, posting 215 passing yards with one TD against three picks.

Toledo Eyes Winning Record in MAC Action
The Toledo Rockets are attempting to surpass the .500 mark in MAC play in this one. Toledo has been the subject of many narrow defeats. They only lost by eight points against Kentucky, one point against WMU, and five points against Bowling Green. Toledo issued a win against Kent State two weeks ago and was hit with a 28-7 road loss against Washington State last week in a meeting that had the Rockets marked as 2.5-point favorites. The Rockets are 2-2 in MAC play. They have covered the spread in two of their past five games.
Tucker Gleason is having a superb season. The senior QB has posted 230 or more yards on five occasions this season. He netted just under 300 yards against Kent State a few weeks ago and has amassed 1721 passing yards and a 13:5 TD to INT ratio on the season.
Toledo is also just as dangerous on the ground. Chip Trayanum is having a monster season. The senior RB has missed the last two games with an injury and is questionable. He has amassed 601 rushing yards in just six games. Kenji Christian has managed 379 rushing yards.
The receiving core has a great player in Junior Vandeross III. The senior WR has surpassed 50 yards in six games this season and leads the team with 608 receiving yards. The Toledo offense only nettedΒ 299 total yards against Washington State. That was a rare output considering they are reporting an average of 437 yards per game.
The Rockets' defense is the best you will see on a mid-major team. They rank in the top 15 in most categories. They gave up 321 yards against Washington State and are keeping opponents to an average of only 237 yards per game. KβVon Sherman leads the team with 56 tackles. The pass defense is elite, coming in at fifth, while the rush defense is marked 15th.
Toledo is scoring an average of 31.8 points on the season, ranking them 50th. The Rockets are keeping opponents to an average of 16 points, positioning them 11th.
Northern Illinois vs. Toledo Pick
Spread Pick for Northern Illinois vs. Toledo
- Northern Illinois +14.5 (5 units)
The Northern Illinois Huskies have confidence after their first conference win of the season last week in a 21-7 triumph. This is a team that only lost to Maryland of the Big Ten by 11 points and Eastern Michigan by six points. The Toledo Rockets are the better team here, but they could be overlooking Northern Illinois, and on to the Miami Ohio Redhawks, whom they play next week. The Redhawks are first in the conference.
Furthermore, Northern Illinois is averaging a solid 173 rushing yards per game. The Rockets squandered 162 rushing yards in their recent game. Also, the Huskies' defense is among the best in the MAC and will keep them in this game. Toledo has a potent passing offense that ranks 47th. They will have difficulty producing yards in the air against a dominant Huskies' pass defense that is keeping teams to an average of only 167 yards per game, ranking them 15th in the country.
Over/Under Pick for Northern Illinois vs. Toledo
- Under 41.5 ( 5 units)
I expect this to be a defensive clash. Northern Illinois is one of the worst offensive teams in the entire country. They have only averaged 16.5 points in conference play. They are averaging an abysmal 276 yards per game. They have also almost no production in the air, averaging 103 passing yards per game.
In addition, as mentioned, the Huskies' defense is one of the top units in the MAC. They have conceded an average of only 19 points in conference play. Also, another reason Northern Illinois doesn't score many points is the slow offensive pace, ranking 126th in plays per game. The under is 5-2 in the Rockets' previous seven conference games.
