It’s a massive Sun Belt game on Saturday, Oct. 11. Read our Old Dominion vs Marshall prediction along with the other NCAAF Betting Picks. Old Dominion is 4-1 and they are on a 4-game winning streak. They are coming off of a blowout win over Coastal Carolina to kick-start their conference slate. The Thundering Herd are 2-3 and have just exited their bye week after a devastating OT loss to Louisiana. Marshall has had Old Dominion’s number for the past several years, winning seven-straight meetings. These two teams will meet with the kick-off set for 3:30 P.M. EST.

Old Dominion on 4-game winning streak

Old Dominion is 4-1 overall this season. They opened the season with a 27-14 loss to Indiana on the road in Week 1. The Monarchs have followed it with four straight wins highlighted by a road victory over Virginia Tech.

In their last game, ODU defeated Coastal Carolina 47-7 on Saturday, Oct. 4. It was a huge game for the Monarchs, who scored 44 unanswered points. The win was the Monarchs' opening game of conference play as they remain favorites in the Sun Belt.

Quarterback Colton Joseph threw for 315 yards on 17-for-30 passing and four touchdowns in the win. It was another big game for running back Trequan Jones, who added 98 yards on the ground.

Joseph has thrown for 1,215 yards and has completed 65% of his passes this season. He has thrown 12 touchdowns and four picks. The offensive line has protected him well as he’s only been sacked five times. Jones is averaging 9.4 yards per carry as he’s scored four touchdowns on the year, too. Three different receivers have over 295 yards receiving this season as they have combined for nine of Joseph’s 12 touchdowns.

On defense, Old Dominion is led in tackles by Jerome Carter with 37 tackles. Five different players have over 1.5 sacks on the season. The defense has also forced an incredible 11 turnovers through the first five games, too.

"I think we have more guys who love the game and that love of the game transcends into the preparation," head coach Ricky Rahne said this week. ”They don't just love Saturdays, they love all the other parts of it, too, and that doesn't mean they enjoy every part of practice. But it does mean that, overall, the preparation they enjoy."

Old Dominion is averaging 247.4 passing yards per game, which ranks 57th in the league. They are the ninth-best rushing offense, going for 251 yards per game. The Monarchs are also scoring 36.2 points per gam,e ranking 35th.

On defense, the Monarchs are allowing 14.6 points per game, which ranks 18th best. They are the 13th-best pass defense, giving up 149 passing yards per game. Old Dominion is also allowing 165 rushing yards per game, ranking them 104th.

Old Dominion is 4-1 against the spread this season. They are 2-0 against the spread when playing on the road. They are also 3-1 against the spread when they have been double-digit favorites. The total is 2-2-1 when the Monarchs have played. The under is 2-0-1 when the total has been set at 53 or higher.

Marshall looks to keep winning streak over Old Dominion

Marshall is 2-3 overall this season. They opened the season with defeats to No. 5 Georgia and their home-opener to Missouri State. The Thundering Herd bounced back with wins over Eastern Kentucky and Middle Tennessee State. The Thundering Herd have won seven straight games over the Monarchs coming into this week.

In their last game, Marshall lost 54-51 to Louisiana on the road on Saturday, Sept. 27. Marshall led 34-17 with 16 minutes to play in the game. The Ragin’ Cajuns never went away as they tied the game 34-34 with 4:27 left.

Marshall went on to score a touchdown, but they left too much time on the clock. Louisiana tied the game once again with 45 seconds left to force overtime. After scoring touchdowns in the first OT, Marshall was forced to hit a field goal in 2OT. Louisiana scored a touchdown to win the game and shock Marshall.

Quarterback Carlos Del Rio-Wilson threw for 258 yards on 24-for-31 passing and three touchdowns. Running back Michael Allen also rushed for 138 yards and two scores in the loss. Marshall did win the turnover battle, but they struggled to move the ball in the fourth quarter.

On the season, Rio-Wilson has thrown for 637 yards and has completed 78% of his passes. He’s played a major role in the past two games against Middle Tennessee State and Louisiana. He has thrown nine touchdowns and zero picks. Allen has rushed for a total 273 yards and three touchdowns on the year. Demarcus Lacey is the top wide receiver as he’s caught 20 passes for 275 yards and three scores.

On defense, Kerion Martin leads the team with 31 tackles. Braydin Ward has a team-high three sacks on the season. Boogie Trotter has a team-high three picks, too. The defense has forced six turnovers on the year.

“We had a great week of practice last week and the bit of extra time was needed to prepare for Old Dominion,” head coach Tony Gibson said about the team’s bye week. “We did a lot of self-scout last week. We just have to fix some things defensively and offensively just to keep our momentum going.”

Marshall is averaging 31.6 points per game, which ranks 54th. They are the 38th-ranked rushing offense as they are averaging 193 yards per game on the ground. The Thundering Herd are passing for 169 yards per game, placing them 119th.

On defense, Marshall is allowing 31 points per game which ranks 117th. They are the 61st-ranked rush defense, giving up 134.8 rushing yards per game. The Thundering Herd are allowing 244.8 passing yards per gam,e ranking them 100th.

Marshall is 3-2 against the spread this season. They are 1-0 against the spread when they have been underdogs. The Thundering Herd covered as 38.5-point underdogs against Georgia in Week 1. Marshall is 1-1 against the spread when they have played at home. The total is 2-2-1 when Marshall has played this season. The under is 1-0-1- when the total has been set at 52 points or higher.

But, the demons of the past could still haunt them as they face Marshall. The Thundering Herd have won seven straight games over the Monarchs and they will keep it close once again this week.

Marshall is the 38th-ranked rushing offense this season. This will be a key for them in this game as Old Dominion is allowing the 104th-ranked most yards on the ground. Marshall’s defense has played well, too. They are also coming off of their bye week which will be key in keeping them fresh throughout the game. Old Dominion may get the win in this game, but it will be close thanks to Marshall’s rushing attack and home-field advantage.
