Ducks Look to Roll to 3-0 Start
Oregon racked up a second straight blowout as it drubbed Oklahoma State at home last week in their previous game. The Ducks ran their mark to 2-0 on the year and seek a third straight triumph as they kick off conference play here. Against Oklahoma State, Oregon scored two touchdowns on their first three offensive snaps and was up 14-0 just 1:36 into the game. The Ducks were up 21-0 after the opening quarter and rolled the rest of the way, handing Oklahoma State their worst loss in the Mike Gundy era. Oregon piled up a 631-211 advantage in total offense, picked up 24 first downs while allowing nine and forced the game’s two turnovers, a pair of pick-sixes 42 seconds apart in the third quarter.
For the year, the Ducks are 24th in the nation in passing offense with 286 yards per contest, while they are 6th in rushing offense by racking up 282.5 yards per game on the ground. Oregon stands 3rd in the FBS in scoring offense with an average of 64 points per game, while they rank 12th in scoring defense by allowing eight points per contest. Dante Moore has hit 34 of 44 passes for 479 yards with six touchdowns while adding 29 yards on the ground. Luke Moga (two of three, 53 yards, 47 rush yards), Austin Novosad (one of two, 40 yards) and Brock Thomas (zero of one) have seen limited action under center. Noah Whittington leads the ground game with 14 carries for 159 yards plus two scores. Jayden Limar (nine carries, 107 yards, two TD), Dierre Hill Jr. (six carries, 67 yards, TD), Makhi Hughes (10 carries, 32 yards) and Jordon Davison (nine carries, 32 yards, four TD) are all effective options. Northwestern Hoping to Spring Upset
Northwestern bounced back from a road loss to Tulane as it routed Western Illinois at home last Saturday. The Wildcats evened their mark at 1-1 on the season and look to pull the upset at home here in their conference opener. Against Western Illinois, Northwestern drove for a touchdown after taking the opening kickoff and never looked back en route to the win. The Wildcats were up 15-0 after the opening quarter, 22-0 at the half and 28-0 after three quarters. They didn’t let Western Illinois to score until just 2:47 remained in the game. Northwestern racked up a 526-184 edge in total offense, rolled up a 24-10 advantage in first downs and owned a 35:54 to 24:06 margin in time of possession. Both teams turned the ball over once in the contest.
The Wildcats average 203 yards per game (83rd in the FBS) through the air and 178.5 yards per game (55th) on the ground. Northwestern averages 22.5 points (98th of the 136 teams in the FBS to play this season in scoring offense) and gives up 15 points (50th in the nation in scoring defense) per contest. Preston Stone is 40 of 65 passing for 406 yards with three touchdowns and four interceptions on the season. Cam Porter leads the run game with 18 carries for 137 yards and a score. Caleb Komolafe (20 carries, 97 yards) and Joseph Himon II (16 carries, 78 yards) are in the mix as well. Griffin Wilde leads the team with 11 receptions for 158 yards on the season. Himon II (five grabs, 39 yards) and Ricky Ahumaraeze (four catches, 73 yards) are the only other players with more than three catches. Luke Akers is two of two on extra point attempts and three of three on field goal attempts with a long of 35 this year. Jack Olsen hit both extra point attempts while not attempting a field goal this season.
Pick for Oregon vs. Northwestern
Spread Pick for Oregon vs. Northwestern
- Oregon -27.5 (4 units)
Oregon has piled up a staggering 128 points in their first two games as they do damage through the air and on the ground. Moore has been terrific in his first two starts for the Ducks after spending last season behind Dillon Gabriel. Northwestern has been solid defensively as they held Tulane in check despite losing in one-sided fashion before stifling Western Illinois. The Wildcats have struggled taking care of the ball, committing six turnovers in the first two weeks of the year while forcing just one takeaway. That’s problematic for Northwestern and it’s hard to see them slowing down the Ducks enough to stay in the game. Oregon rolls to a 3-0 start with a win here.
Over/Under Pick for Oregon vs. Northwestern
- Over 48.5 (4 units)
Oregon comes into this game having gone over the total in both their games this season. The Ducks have combined for totals of 72 and 72 points in those contests, surpassing the number of 56.5 points (in the Montana State game) and 55.5 (Oklahoma State) on their own. Oregon has put up five straight overs dating back to last season. Northwestern has stayed under the number in both games this season. The Wildcats combined for 26 points (against a number of 46.5) in their loss to Tulane and 49 points (against a number of 49.5) in their win over Eastern Illinois. It’s hard seeing the Wildcats slowing Oregon enough to keep the Ducks out of the high-30s for points. Take the over here as a result.
