Struggling in transition
After beating FCS Lafayette 45-13, Oregon State came off its bye week and upset Washington State 10-7 at home. It was an emotional win for interim coach Robb Akey and the program, but the Beavers failed to follow it up last week, losing 21-17 at home to Sam Houston State, which ranks as the third-worst FBS team according to the College Football Power Index.
The Beavers outgained Sam Houston State by more than 300 yards (474 to 157), but lost the turnover battle 3-1 and went 0 for 3 on fourth-down attempts.

Offensively, Oregon State ranks 87th nationally in total offense (360.7 yards per game) and 121st in scoring (19.6 points per game). Former Texas and Duke quarterback Maalik Murphy started most of the season, but Gabarri Johnson got the nod against Sam Houston State. Johnson went 29 of 42 for 286 yards with two interceptions and added 22 rushing yards. Running back Anthony Hankerson was the only other Beaver to record a carry, rushing 33 times for 166 yards and two touchdowns.
Defensively, Oregon State has climbed from 112th to 70th nationally in total yards allowed after the past two games. The Beavers rank 97th in scoring defense (29 points per game allowed), though much of that damage came earlier in the season against opponents such as Texas Tech, Oregon, Houston, and Wake Forest.
Tulsa is looking to stop the losing streak
Tulsa has lost five straight games, including a 40-21 road defeat at Florida Atlantic. Outside of a season-opening win over Abilene Christian, the Golden Hurricane’s only other victory came in an upset of Oklahoma State back in September.
Tulsa ranks 68th nationally in total offense (386.2 yards per game) but just 108th in scoring (21.9 points per game). The offense is balanced, ranking 69th in both passing and rushing yards per game.
Quarterback Baylor Hayes has settled in as the starter after splitting snaps early in the season. He has completed 58.4% of his passes for 1,564 yards with nine touchdowns and five interceptions. Hayes has struggled with protection, taking at least five sacks in three of the past four games. He is coming off his best performance of the season, throwing for 296 yards and three touchdowns against Temple.
Running back Dominic Richardson leads Tulsa in rushing for the season, but Ajay Allen carried the load last week with 118 yards on 23 carries and a touchdown. However, Allen’s second-quarter fumble was returned 95 yards for a touchdown, swinging momentum and turning a close game into a rout. WR Zion Booker (undisclosed) is questionable. He has 46 catches for 418 yards and two TDs.
Defensively, Tulsa ranks 116th nationally in total defense (416 yards per game), 116th against the run, and 93rd against the pass. The Golden Hurricane are allowing 30.8 points per game, which ranks 113th.
Oregon State vs. Tulsa predictions
OSU vs Tulsa ATS Pick:
- Tulsa +2.5 (4 units)
Despite Tulsa’s defensive concerns, this is a tough spot for Oregon State. The Beavers suffered a major letdown as 20.5-point home favorites against one of the worst FBS teams last week and it’s difficult to trust their focus or motivation for a road trip to Tulsa.
For Tulsa, a proud mid-major program but I'm not sure the Beavers will grant them the respect they deserve. As for Tulsa, I see them getting up to be facing an Oregon State program that still carries pedigree from its Pac-12 history and brand, despite the current state of the program.
While Tulsa’s defense has struggled, it has also faced some explosive offenses, and the Beavers are not that. Oregon State ranks just 112th in offensive efficiency and remains unsettled at quarterback, relying heavily on Hankerson and allowing him to take all the punishment, while refusing to rotate in other backs like promising freshman Cornell Hatcher Jr.
Oregon State has Washington State next, which is the game it truly cares about. Motivation appears to be on Tulsa’s side, and I think they will show the Beavers more respect than the so my play is the Golden Hurricane at home.
Oregon State vs. Tulsa Total Pick:
- Under 48.5 (3 units)
This total isn’t one that I love. Oregon State ranks 94th in defensive efficiency and 112th on offense, while Tulsa ranks 108th on defense and 119th on offense, according to the College Football Power Index. Although the numbers bring doubt on both sides, and conditions should be perfect, with temperatures around 81 degrees with no rain expected in the forecast, the under still makes sense.
Both teams have struggled to finish drives, and Oregon State ranks 11th nationally in time of possession. I believe these defenses are also better than their numbers suggest, given the tough opponents each has faced.
With Oregon State’s quarterback situation unsettled and Tulsa’s offensive line struggling to protect Hayes, the under is the side I am more confident in.
