Oregon State looks to snap a two-game skid
The Oregon State Beavers (2-9; 3-8 ATS; 5-6 O/U) are having a terrible season. Their first win came in Week 8, when the Beavers beat the FCS Lafayette Leopards 45-13 as 21.5-point home favorites. After a narrow win over Washington State, the Beavers dropped consecutive games against Sam Houston, 21-1,7 and Tulsa, 31-14.
Oregon State is coming off a bye. Two weeks ago, the Beavers were a slight 1-point dog at Tulsa. They were scoreless until the fourth quarter, when freshman QB Tristan Ti’a threw a couple of touchdowns. Sophomore QB Gabarri Johnson went 6-of-14 for 44 yards, while junior QB Maalik Murphy was 5-of-11 for 56 yards.
Murphy has been the Beavers’ starting QB through the first seven games. Then, Johnson took over, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see Ti’a under center in Week 14. Anyway, senior RB Anthony Hankerson is the best player on this Oregon State team. Hankerson has rushed 231 times for 1,015 yards and nine touchdowns this season.
The Beavers score just 19.1 points per game (122nd in the nation) on 131.5 rushing yards (95th) and 224.5 passing yards (72nd). They allow 29.2 points in return (tied for 100th) on 154.8 rushing yards (81st) and 224.7 passing yards (77th).
Washington State eyes another home W
The Washington State Cougars (5-6; 7-4 ATS; 3-8 O/U) have dropped five of their six road games this season. At least, they’ve gone 4-1 SU and 3-2 ATS at home, so the Cougars can become bowl eligible with a win over Oregon State in Week 14.
Last week, the Cougars suffered a 24-20 defeat at James Madison, playing as 15.5-point road underdogs. Washington State had a 17-10 lead at halftime and a 20-17 lead with 9:24 left to play in the fourth quarter, but the Cougars couldn’t hold on.
Senior QB Zevi Eckhaus led the way for Washington State in Week 13. He threw for 171 yards, a touchdown, and an interception while rushing for 26 yards and a touchdown. Junior wideout Tony Freeman had six receptions for 81 yards and a TD.
Eckhaus has thrown for 1,563 yards, 11 touchdowns, and nine interceptions across nine games this season. The Cougars score 20.6 points per game (117th in the nation) on 111.4 rushing yards (120th) and 197.0 passing yards (100th). They allow 21.3 points in return (37th) on 138.8 rushing yards (tied for 49th) and 166.6 passing yards (15th).
Oregon State vs. Washington State Pick
Spread Pick for Oregon State vs. Washington State
- Washington State -13.5 (5 units)
The Cougars can only play better than they did in that 10-7 defeat at Oregon State in Week 10. Two weeks ago, they trounced Louisiana Tech 28-3 at home, and last week, the Cougars battled bravely against James Madison on the road.
Washington State is arguably a much better defensive team than Oregon State. The Beavers will continue to lean on Anthony Hankerson, but their passing game will struggle against the Cougars, regardless of who gets the starting call under center.
Hereof, I’m going with the Cougars, even though I don’t feel comfortable with a 13.5-point spread. They have a huge motive in this game, not only to get revenge for that narrow loss at Oregon State. As I mentioned, the Cougars will go bowling if they beat the Beavers.
Over/Under Pick for Oregon State vs. Washington State
- Under 41.5 (5 units)
The first meeting of the season between these two foes produced just 17 points in total. I don’t expect such a low-scoring affair in Week 14, but the under is still my choice. The Cougars outgained the Beavers 271-184 in total yards in Week 10, and both teams were awful on 3rd down.
The Cougars lean on their defense. They should have learned the lesson, and the Cougars will focus on Anthony Hankerson this time around. I don’t think the Beavers have enough weapons to seriously hurt the Cougars through the air.
The under is 7-0 in Washington State’s last seven games overall, and it is 6-0 in Oregon State’s previous six outings on the road.
