A huge ACC matchup on Saturday night featuring this Georgia Tech vs. Pitt prediction. The No. 14 Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets (9-1, 6-1 ACC) are back home Saturday night, trying to keep their ACC title hopes alive when they host the No. 23 Pitt Panthers (7-3, 5-1 ACC). Both teams still have a lot to play for. Georgia Tech is pushing for a Top-10 finish and a real shot at sneaking into the Playoff. Pitt can also still make it to the conference championship with a win and a little help.

Kickoff is at 7 p.m. EST on ESPN and this is one of the biggest games of Week 13.

Can Pittsburgh Bounce Back After Notre Dame?

Pitt’s 37-15 loss to Notre Dame last week definitely stung, but they’re not out of the ACC race because that was a non-conference game, and Pat Narduzzi mentioned how conference games were more important.

The Panthers' offense is led by quarterback Mason Heintschel, who has thrown for 1,676 yards, 12 touchdowns, and six interceptions. He has been solid isn’t great at 61.8%, and a QBR that ranks him 65th in the country. Coming off a poor game against Notre Dame, he’ll get plenty of chances against a Tech pass defense that’s 105th nationally. The problem for Pitt is the run game. They’re at 119 yards per game, which is 110th in the country. When they can’t run it, Heintschel ends up facing long second and third downs, and things get messy fast.

Defensively, Pitt is the opposite of Tech. They’re outstanding against the run at 90.3 yards allowed per game, which is ninth nationally. The silent killers have been that Pitt is one of the most penalized teams in the country, and they’re dead last in red-zone stops.

Is Georgia Tech Built for This Moment?

Georgia Tech has been one of the most entertaining teams in the country, and it starts with how explosive this offense is. They’re leading the nation at 496.7 yards per game, and they’ve got the balance to match it. With a top 30 passing attack, top 10 ground game,  quarterback Haynes King is running the whole show like a Heisman sleeper. He’s at 2,259 yards, plus he leads the team in rushing with 807 yards and 14 scores.

Efficiency has been a huge part of it, too. They convert over half their third downs, which is ninth nationally, and they basically never waste a red-zone trip. Scoring on 95.3% of their trips down there, which is sixth in the country, and that’s not a great matchup for a Pitt defense that sits 128th in red-zone stops.

Defense is where things get interesting. Georgia Tech gives up 409.2 yards a game and sits outside the top 100. They’ve been shaky in both phases and needed King to save them last week in that 36-34 win over Boston College.

Pittsburgh Panthers vs Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets Predictions

Pitt vs GA Tech Against the Spread Pick:

  • Georgia Tech -2.5 (5 units)

Georgia Tech checks more boxes. Better efficiency, fewer penalties, and a huge red-zone advantage. Haynes King also gives them the best player in the matchup, and he should carve up Pitt’s pass defense while extending drives with his legs.

Pitt’s run defense will make Tech work for it, but the Panthers hurt themselves too often. The red-zone numbers are brutal, and Tech is way too good at finishing drives for that not to matter. Under a field goal, the line is just short enough to trust the more reliable offense and the better-tested team.

Pitt vs GA Tech Total Pick:

  • Under 62.5 (3 units)

Even though both offenses have firepower, this matchup leans toward the under. Georgia Tech loves to run the ball and stack long, steady drives at home. Pitt has trouble running it, so they could be stuck punting in a lot of third-and-long spots. Tech’s defense isn’t great on paper, but they bend more than break.

Pitt’s offense also never got going last week, and if they’re one-dimensional again, Heintschel is going to have a long night. Pitt’s run defense will slow Tech down enough to keep the tempo controlled, and that should keep this one under the number.
