Pitt boasts a top-25 aerial attack
Pittsburgh (8-4 SU, 8-4 ATS, and 7-5 O/U) lost 38-7 to Miami (FL) in its season finale, failing to cover as 6.5-point spread underdogs. The Panthers reeled off five straight ACC wins after dropping their conference opener to Louisville, but dropped two of their last three games (all against ranked teams). While they have fallen off the radar recently, it was a mostly successful season despite the lack of signature victories.
Freshman QB Mason Heintschel led Pittsburgh's passing offense this season, completing 63.8 percent of his passes for 2,098 yards with 15 touchdowns and seven interceptions. His top receiving target is junior WR Kenny Johnson, who caught 48 passes for 695 yards and five touchdowns. Freshman RB Ja'Kyrian Turner (124 carries for 652 yards and seven TDs) paces the Pitt ground game.
Pitt scores 35.1 points per game (15th) and averages 391.8 total yards (67th), including 274.8 passing yards (20th) and 117.0 rushing yards (115th). The Panthers' defense allows 24.9 points (69th) and 337.2 total yards (39th) per game, including 240.2 passing yards (102nd) and 97.0 rushing yards (8th).
Pittsburgh Panthers Injury Report:
- DT Sean FitzSimmons, RG Ryan Carretta, and LG Keith Gouveia are questionable.
- RBย Desmond Reid and LB Kyle Louis have opted out of the Military Bowl.
East Carolina left scrambling by Military Bowl opt-outs and exits
East Carolina (8-4 SU, 7-5 ATS, and 6-6 O/U) beat Florida Atlantic 42-3 in its season finale, covering the spread as seven-point favorites. The Pirates were tripped up by NC State and BYU in non-conference play, but won five of their next six games after the loss to the Cougars. ECU's offense was fun to watch, and its defense was the best in the AAC, limiting opponents to 20.3 points per game and 120.3 rushing yards per game.
Senior QB Katin Houser led East Carolina's passing offense this season, completing 65.9 percent of his passes for 3,300 yards with 19 touchdowns and six interceptions. He opted out of the Military Bowl and is entering the transfer portal, handing QB1 duties to redshirt seniorย Michael Wright Jr. (13 passing yards this year), who previously played at Vanderbilt, Mississippi State, and Northwestern. ECU's top receiving target is senior WR Anthony Smith (60 receptions for 897 yards and five touchdowns), and sophomore RB London Montgomery (156 carries for 742 yards and seven TDs) paces the ECU run game.
East Carolina scores 33.5 points per game (23rd) and averages 465.7 total yards (15th), including 280.7 passing yards (16th) and 185.0 rushing yards (37th). The Pirates' defense allows 20.3 points (27th) and 348.9 total yards (48th) per game, including 228.7 passing yards (83rd) and 120.3 rushing yards (29th).
East Carolina Pirates Injury Report:
- LG Panda Askew and CB Rasheed Reason are questionable to play vs. Pittsburgh.
- QB Katin Houser, WR Yannick Smith, and TE Jayvontay Conner, and OT Jimarion McCrimon are entering the transfer portal.
Pittsburgh vs. East Carolina Pick and Preview
Spread Pick for Pittsburgh vs. East Carolina
- Pitt -10.5 (4 Units)
I like the Panthers to roll over the Pirates in Saturday's Military Bowl.
ECU's defense was stout against the run this season, but was soft against the pass, ranking 97th in passing plays allowed of ten or more yards. Pitt's offense led the ACC in scoring (35.1 PPG), airing the football out for 275 yards per game. The Panthers scored 30-plus in six of their last eight games, as only ranked Notre Dame and Miami teams held them in check. Five of those six wins were by at least ten points, as well. While the Pirates would have made this an interesting bowl game with Houser under center, they won't be as competitive with the journeyman Wright Jr. as QB1. East Carolina will also be without their second-leading receiver and a starting tight end. The Pirates will also play without the direction of offensive coordinator John David Baker (left for same position at Ole Miss) and defensive coordinator Josh Aldridge, who packed his bags for USF.
Over/Under Pick for Pittsburgh vs. East Carolina
- Under 55.5 (5 Units)
This game total is too high, especially considering East Carolina's opt-outs and offensive coordinator change. The Pirates will struggle to run the football against the Panthers, and Wright Jr. isn't reliable enough to put the team on his back, especially after attempting only seven passes all year. Pitt should put up 27-plus points in this one, but don't expect much more than that. The Pirates were especially stout in the red zone, ranking 6th in opponent red zone touchdown percentage (40.4%) and 8th nationally in opponent red zone scoring percentage (71.4%).
