The Aztecs trounced Stony Brook in Week 1
The San Diego State Aztecs hosted the FCS Stony Brook Seawolves in Week 1. It was the first-ever meeting between the schools, and the Aztecs routed the Seawolves 42-0, covering a 19.5-point spread with ease.
San Diego State outgained Stony Brook 464-95 in total yards. The Aztecs held the ball in possession for 37:25, posting 54 carries for 228 yards. Junior RB Lucky Sutton led the charge with 23 totes for 100 yards and two touchdowns.
Junior QB Jayden Denegal completed 13 of his 25 passing attempts in his SDSU debut, throwing for 207 yards and a touchdown. Junior WR Jacob Bostick had three receptions for 53 yards and a TD, and fellow junior wideout Donovan Brown added two catches for 48 yards.
Sean Lewis started his second season at the Aztecs’ helm with a bang. Last year, SDSU went 3-9 overall and 2-5 in conference play. The Aztecs were 116th in the country in scoring offense (21.3 points per game) and 97th in scoring defense (29.6).
The Cougars survived a scare in Week 1
The Washington Cougars hosted the FCS Idaho Vandals this past Saturday. The Cougars were listed as 16.5-point favorites, but they barely outlasted the Vandals 13-10. Jack Stevens’ 32-yard field goal with three seconds left on the clock lifted Washington State over Idaho.
The Cougars blew a 10-0 lead in Week 1. They won the turnover battle 2-1, but the Cougars racked up just 211 total yards while allowing 221 in return. Washington State went 3-for-12 on a third down and posted a paltry three rushing yards on 22 carries.
Sophomore QB Jaxon Potter led the way for the Cougars last Saturday, tossing for 208 yards and a touchdown. Potter completed 23 of his 30 passing attempts. Junior WR Tony Freeman had seven catches for 64 yards, while senior wideout Joshua Meredith posted two receptions for 31 yards and a TD.
The Cougars started a Jimmy Rogers era with a win, but the former South Dakota State head coach cannot be satisfied with his team’s performance. Washington State lost QB John Mateer in the offseason, which is a huge blow for the Cougars. They went 8-5 in 2024, scoring 36.6 points per game (6th in the nation) and allowing 29.9 points in return (tied for 100th).
San Diego State vs. Washington State pick
Spread Pick for San Diego State vs. Washington State
- San Diego State +1.5 (5 units)
The Cougars will dearly miss John Mateer, who tossed for 3,139 yards, 29 touchdowns, and seven interceptions in 2024. WR Kyle Williams was selected in the third round of the 2025 NFL Draft, so the Cougars’ offense will need some time to get things going in 2025.
Washington State’s ground game was horrendous last week. I can’t back the Cougars until I see some improvement in their offensive game. San Diego State’s run defense struggled in 2024, but the Cougars don’t look like a team with enough weapons to hurt the Aztecs. I expect a tight battle that could easily go either way, and I think that San Diego State has a nice opportunity to beat Washington State on the road.
Over/Under Pick for San Diego State vs. Washington State
Under 45.5 (5 units)
The Aztecs’ defense put on a strong performance in Week 1. The clash against Stony Brook is not a proper benchmark, but the Aztecs’ defensive unit showed plenty of promising signs. San Diego State dropped 42 points on Stony Brook, and the Aztecs will have a much taller task in Week 2.
Hereof, I’m backing the under in this game. As I noted, the Cougars will need some time to gel on the offensive side of the ball. They have enough weapons to slow the Aztecs’ offense down, and I expect both teams to struggle to move the chains frequently.
