San Jose State Looking to Get Back in Win Column

San Jose State couldn’t build off a win over New Mexico as they fell on the road against Wyoming in their previous contest on Saturday. Against Wyoming, San Jose State led 14-7 after one quarter, 28-14 at the half and after three quarters before fading. The Spartans gave up three touchdowns over the final 9:59 of the game, including the winning score with 40 seconds to play, to wind up with the loss. San Jose State held a 21-20 edge in first downs, controlled the clock by a 34:54 to 25:06 margin and forced three turnovers while committing a pair, one of which was a pick-six that sparked Wyoming’s comeback. The Spartans were outgained 413-383 in total offense in the contest.

Utah State suffered their second straight loss as they were outgunned on the road by Hawaii Saturday night. The Aggies fell to 3-3 overall and stand 1-1 in the Mountain West on the year. Against Hawaii, Utah State trailed 10-3 after one quarter and 24-20 at the half. The Aggies took a 26-24 lead in the opening minute of the second half but failed to score again, giving up 20 unanswered points to take the loss. Utah State was outgained 546-435 in total offense, gave up 26 first downs while picking up 20, lost time of possession by a 34:01 to 25:59 margin and turned the ball over twice while forcing one turnover in the game.

On the year, the Aggies are 51st in the nation in passing offense as they average 254.7 yards per game through the air and stand 53rd in rushing offense with 163.8 yards per contest. Utah State is 38th in the FBS in scoring offense with 34.7 points per game while they stand 125th in scoring defense as they allow an average of 32.7 points per contest. Bryson Barnes has completed 99 of 155 passes for 1,318 yards with 12 touchdowns against two interceptions while adding 81 carries for 309 yards plus six scores in the game. Jacob Conover (15 of 25, 156 yards, two TD, five rush yards) and Anthony Garcia (three of three, 48 yards, two TD, 25 rush yards, TD) are next on the depth chart. Miles Davis led the run game with 65 carries for 416 yards and three scores while Javen Jacobs (32 carries, 200 yards, two TD) and Noah White (12 carries, 54 yards) are next in line. San Jose State vs. Utah State Pick

Moneyline Pick for San Jose State vs. Utah State

  • Utah State -3.5 (4 units)

San Jose State blew a chance to win in Laramie last week, blowing a two-touchdown lead by giving up three fourth-quarter touchdowns. The Spartans could be down their top two running backs in this contest, which could be a problem given their inability to run the ball as it stands. Eget leads the conference in passing yards and passing touchdowns this season. The problem is that San Jose State is prone to turning the ball over, committing 11 giveaways on the season. Throw in that the Spartans are 0-3 on the road while Utah State is 3-0 at home on the year, and you have to give the advantage to the Aggies here. Look for Utah State to pick up a win here to get back over .500 on the year.

Over/Under Pick for San Jose State vs. Utah State

  • Over 64.5 (4 units)

San Jose State enters this game having seen the over post a 4-2 mark in their six games this season. The Spartans have recorded four straight overs entering this game. San Jose State has gone over the number in two of its three road games this year. Utah State has seen the over post a 4-2 mark in their six games on the year, including their last two. The Aggies are a dismal 125th in the FBS in scoring defense, while San Jose State is 102nd in that department. Given that both teams surrender more than 400 yards per game, this game has the potential for a track meet. Look for this game to wind up over the number as a result.
