SMU Mustangs vs Florida State Seminoles Preview

SMU enters the season with the most important continuity advantage in the matchup. Kevin Jennings returns after throwing for 3,641 yards and 26 touchdowns in 2025, and he begins the year as the ACC's active leader in career passing yards and total offense. He has also won 19 games as SMU's starter. That level of experience matters in a road conference opener because Rhett Lashlee does not need to protect a new quarterback or simplify the offense while the team settles into the season.

Jennings did miss time in August after jamming a finger on his throwing hand, but he returned to first-team work before the opener and is expected to start. The larger offensive structure around him is also stable. SMU returns three offensive-line starters, including All-ACC left tackle PJ Williams and center Joshua Bates, while Andrew Chamblee brings additional starting experience at tackle. The Mustangs also added Kendrick Raphael after he rushed for 943 yards and 13 touchdowns at California last season.

That combination gives SMU multiple ways to attack Florida State. Jennings can create explosive passes when the protection holds, but the Mustangs do not need to make the game entirely about him. Raphael and Dramekco Green can keep the offense balanced, which is important against a Florida State defense that showed both athleticism and communication problems in Week 0.

Florida State's 34-17 win over New Mexico State was better on the scoreboard than it was for long stretches of the game. The Seminoles had only 17 points midway through the third quarter before creating separation late. Ashton Daniels finished with 202 passing yards, one touchdown and one interception, while Ousmane Kromah provided the most reliable offensive production with 115 rushing yards and a touchdown.

The run game is Florida State's best route to controlling this matchup. Daniels is athletic enough to contribute on designed runs and scrambles, while Kromah gives the Seminoles a physical back who can keep the offense ahead of the chains. Florida State does not want a game in which Daniels is forced to match Jennings throw for throw. The more the Seminoles can create second-and-medium situations, the more they can use play action and reduce the number of high-difficulty passing downs.

SMU's defensive front is a much tougher test than the one Florida State saw in Week 0. The Mustangs were strong against the run last season and added more size through the portal. If SMU prevents Kromah from consistently creating five-yard gains on first down, Daniels will have to operate against a defense that can disguise pressure and force him to make decisions from the pocket.

The availability report creates legitimate concerns on both sides. Florida State will be without linebacker Blake Nichelson, while defensive backs Karson Hobbs, Chuck Kennon and Jordan Crutchfield are also out. Defensive lineman Darryll Desir is doubtful, and receiver Tae'Shaun Gelsey is doubtful. SMU will be without safeties Ahmaad Moses and Jaden Milliner-Jones, along with several depth players, while receiver Daylon Singleton is questionable.

The missing SMU safeties matter because Florida State has enough speed to attack vertically if Daniels gets time. Duce Robinson and the Seminoles' other perimeter targets can punish coverage mistakes, especially if SMU has to rotate inexperienced defensive backs into larger roles. That is the clearest path for Florida State to outperform its Week 0 passing efficiency.

SMU still owns the more settled offensive structure. The Mustangs have gone 14-2 in ACC play since joining the conference, and Jennings already led SMU to a 42-16 win over Florida State in the programs' first meeting in 2024. That result should not be treated as a direct predictor because the rosters have changed, but it does reinforce the fact that Jennings has already seen this opponent and this stage.

The schedule creates a different type of early-season contrast. Florida State has already played a full game and should benefit from live tackling, communication and game-speed repetitions. SMU, however, has had the advantage of preparing for the opener with current Florida State film available while the Seminoles have no 2026 SMU game tape. That information gap matters when one team has a veteran quarterback and established offensive system.

The betting market has gradually sided with SMU. The Mustangs opened around -2.5, fell as low as -1.5 during parts of the offseason, then moved through -3 and touched -3.5 during game week. The number has since returned closer to -3, with some books still offering SMU -2.5 at a more expensive price. That movement makes the current spread more difficult to attack than the early number because three is an important margin in a matchup expected to remain competitive.

The total has moved in the opposite direction from the weather. The opener was around 52.5 before betting pushed the number to 53.5. That creates a better current price for an Under position, especially because thunderstorms are possible around kickoff. Wind is not expected to be severe, so this is not a pure weather bet, but wet conditions can still reduce downfield passing efficiency and make both teams more comfortable leaning on the run.

Matchup Breakdown

Jennings is the clearest individual advantage in the game. He has more starting experience, more familiarity with his offense and a better track record of producing efficient passing against ACC defenses. Florida State has to prevent him from finding easy rhythm throws early because SMU's tempo becomes much more difficult to defend once the offense starts generating first downs.

The Seminoles can counter by making the game physical. Kromah's rushing production in Week 0 showed that Florida State can create offense without asking Daniels to carry every possession. If the Seminoles establish the run and keep Jennings on the sideline, they can reduce the total number of SMU possessions and make the home-field environment more meaningful in the fourth quarter.

Third down should be decisive. SMU has the quarterback more likely to convert difficult passing situations, while Florida State needs to avoid them. Daniels can create with his legs, but repeated third-and-seven situations give the Mustangs more freedom to disguise coverage and pressure. Florida State's offensive line has to produce enough early-down efficiency to keep the playbook open.

The secondary injuries create volatility on both sides. SMU is missing two safeties, while Florida State is down multiple defensive backs and a linebacker. That makes explosive plays the largest threat to a lower-scoring projection. One busted coverage can produce seven points without either offense sustaining a long drive.

The weather can work against that volatility. Scattered storms and a wet field would favor shorter throws and rushing attempts, especially if rain arrives during the first half. Both teams have capable running backs and mobile quarterbacks, so neither offense needs to force the ball downfield if conditions become uncomfortable.

The market position is also important. Laying SMU -2.5 is meaningfully better than -3.5. A three-point Mustangs win cashes the lower number and loses the higher one. If the spread remains available below three at a tolerable price, SMU is the preferable side. Once the market moves through a field goal, the total becomes the cleaner way to approach the game.

Game Thesis: SMU has the more trustworthy quarterback, the stronger offensive continuity and the benefit of preparing from Florida State's Week 0 film. Florida State has home field, a live-game preparation advantage and a rushing attack capable of shortening the contest, but the Seminoles did not show enough passing consistency against New Mexico State to justify expecting them to trade touchdowns with Jennings. The total has moved upward despite that concern and despite a forecast that could produce wet conditions, leaving the Under as the better current price.

SMU Mustangs vs Florida State Seminoles Best Bet - Total: Under 53.5 (-110)

Under 53.5 is the preferred wager because the current number has moved a full point above the opener while Florida State's offensive questions remain unresolved. The Seminoles can run the ball effectively and still produce a favorable Under script if those rushing drives consume clock rather than turn into explosive touchdowns.

SMU does not need to play slowly for the wager to work. Jennings can lead the Mustangs into the upper 20s or low 30s while the total stays below 54 if Florida State remains around 20 points. The matchup becomes especially favorable to the Under if SMU forces Daniels to win from obvious passing downs instead of allowing Kromah to control first down.

The injury situation creates the main concern. Both secondaries are missing important players, so explosive passing touchdowns are possible even if neither offense consistently moves the ball. Turnovers are another danger because short fields can add points without consuming much clock.

The weather provides additional support without being the entire handicap. Rain and thunderstorms around kickoff can reduce footing and make both teams more willing to use the run game. At 53.5, the wager has enough room for a competitive game in the high 40s or low 50s. The Under becomes less attractive below 51.5.

SMU Mustangs vs Florida State Seminoles Spread Pick: SMU -2.5 (-122)

SMU -2.5 is the preferred secondary side if the bettor can still find that number. Jennings is the best quarterback in the matchup, the Mustangs have the more experienced offensive line and SMU has had the full offseason to prepare with Florida State's current-season opener available for study.

The price is less attractive than a standard -110, but keeping the spread below three matters more than saving a few cents. If only SMU -3.5 is available, the wager becomes much harder to justify because a field-goal win would no longer cash.

Florida State's best path to covering is controlling the run game and using Doak Campbell Stadium to create early communication problems for SMU. The Seminoles can also exploit the Mustangs' safety absences if Daniels hits enough vertical throws. The projection still favors SMU because the quarterback and offensive-structure advantages are more reliable over four quarters.

Prediction: SMU 30, Florida State 20
