Jags Come Up Short vs Red Wolves

South Alabama comes into this game at 1–6, still searching for consistency after a frustrating 15–14 loss to Arkansas State. The Jaguars have leaned heavily on their ground game, averaging nearly 200 rushing yards per contest, which ranks among the top 30 nationally. Running back Kentrel Bullock has been the focal point, already surpassing 560 yards on the season with six touchdowns, and his ability to churn out tough yards has kept the offense afloat. Quarterback Bishop Davenport has been efficient but conservative, completing over 66% of his passes with nine touchdowns and four interceptions. The passing attack has lacked explosiveness, but wideout Devin Voisin remains a steady target, leading the team in receptions and yards.

The Jaguars’ offensive line has been a mixed bag, showing flashes of dominance in the run game but struggling in pass protection. That inconsistency has limited Davenport’s ability to push the ball downfield, forcing South Alabama to rely on methodical drives. When they’ve been able to establish the run early, the offense has looked balanced, but when forced into obvious passing situations, the unit has bogged down. Against a Georgia State defense that has been vulnerable against the run, South Alabama will likely try to control tempo with Bullock and PJ Martin to keep pressure off Davenport.

Defensively, South Alabama has been uneven. They’ve been stout against the pass, ranking inside the top 25 nationally in passing yards allowed per game, but their run defense has been porous, giving up nearly 196 yards per outing. That imbalance has cost them in close games, as opponents have been able to wear them down late. The Jaguars will need their front seven to step up against a Georgia State offense that mixes quarterback runs with traditional ground work. If they can limit explosive plays and force the Panthers into third-and-long situations, South Alabama’s secondary has the ability to tilt the game in their favor.

Georgia State Has Lost Four In A Row

Georgia State also enters at 1–6, coming off a 41–24 loss to Georgia Southern that highlighted both their offensive potential and defensive shortcomings. Quarterback Cameran Brown has been a bright spot, throwing for 280 yards and a touchdown while also rushing for 120 yards and another score in that game. His dual-threat ability gives the Panthers a dynamic element, but it also underscores their reliance on him to generate offense. Running back Rashad Amos has shown flashes, but the ground game has lacked consistency, averaging just under 100 yards per game as a team. Wideout Javon Robinson has emerged as a reliable target, complementing Ted Hurst, who leads the team in receiving yards.

The Panthers’ offensive line has struggled to create push in the run game, which has forced Brown to shoulder too much of the load. When he’s able to extend plays and find receivers downfield, the offense can move the ball effectively, but sustained drives have been rare. Penalties have also been a major issue, with Georgia State ranking near the bottom of the FBS in penalty yards per game. Cleaning up those mistakes will be critical if they want to stay competitive against a South Alabama defense that has been opportunistic in spots.

Defensively, Georgia State has been one of the weakest units in the Sun Belt, allowing over 41 points per game and ranking near the bottom nationally in both rushing and total defense. Opponents have consistently gashed them on the ground, averaging more than 200 rushing yards per contest against the Panthers. That weakness plays directly into South Alabama’s strength, making this matchup a difficult one on paper. For Georgia State to have a chance, they’ll need to generate turnovers and find ways to get off the field on third down. If Brown can keep the offense moving and the defense can come up with a few timely stops, the Panthers could turn this into a competitive home game.

South Alabama vs Georgia State Pick

South Alabama vs Georgia State Spread Pick

  • South Alabama -6.5 (4 Units)

Backing South Alabama -6.5 looks like the sharper side given how these two teams match up. The Jaguars’ strength on the ground with Kentrel Bullock and PJ Martin plays directly into Georgia State’s biggest weakness — a defense that has been gashed for over 200 rushing yards per game. South Alabama has shown they can control tempo when their run game is clicking, and with Bishop Davenport managing the offense efficiently, they don’t need explosive plays to build and sustain drives. That ability to grind out possessions and keep their defense fresh gives them a clear path to covering a one-score spread. On the other side, Georgia State has struggled to protect quarterback Cameran Brown, and their offensive line issues have limited both the passing and running games. Against a South Alabama defense that has been stout against the pass, the Panthers could find themselves in too many long-yardage situations, which plays into the Jaguars’ hands. If South Alabama establishes the run early and forces Georgia State to chase the game, the Jaguars’ balance and defensive edge should be enough to not only win but also cover the -6.5 comfortably.

South Alabama vs Georgia State Over/Under Pick

  • Over 56 (5 Units)

The Over 56 feels like a strong angle because both teams have shown they can move the ball despite their records, and their defensive weaknesses line up to create scoring opportunities. South Alabama’s rushing attack, led by Kentrel Bullock, should find plenty of success against a Georgia State defense giving up over 200 yards per game on the ground, while the Panthers’ dual-threat quarterback Cameran Brown has the ability to generate explosive plays through the air and with his legs. With both defenses struggling to get consistent stops and each offense capable of capitalizing on short fields or broken plays, this matchup has the makings of a high-scoring Sun Belt shootout that pushes the total past 56.
