Saturday's game marks the 19th all-time matchup between South Carolina and Mississippi on the gridiron. Ole Miss leads the series 10-8 and won last season's matchup 27-3 in Columbia.

Gamecocks are trending in the wrong direction

South Carolina (3-5 SU, 4-4 ATS, and 3-5 O/U) has lost three consecutive games and five of its six SEC contests.

The Crimson Tide rallied to sneak past the Gamecocks last weekend, as Alabama WR Germie Bernard scored two touchdowns in the final 2 1/2 minutes. South Carolina trailed 14-6 at halftime, but scored the next 16 points to pull away. Both teams struggled on the ground, averaging 3.1 yards and 3.0 yards per carry.

“It’s hard. As the coach, I feel like I’m letting a lot of people down," South Carolina coach Shane Beamer said. “I know today I let a lot of people down. I wish I had something to say to make it better.”

Sophomore QB LaNorris Sellers leads the USC offense with 1,356 passing yards, six touchdowns, and three picks. He has completed 63.2 percent of his passes, averaging 7.9 yards per pass. Sellers' top receiving targets are sophomore WR Vandrevius Jacobs (21 receptions for 343 yards and two TDs) and junior WR Nyck Harbor (18 receptions for 332 yards and three scores). Senior RB Rahsul Faison paces the Gamecocks' run game with 69 carries for 298 yards and three touchdowns.

South Carolina scores 20.4 points per game (117th) and averages 302.1 total yards (127th), including 195.0 passing yards (102nd) and 107.1 rushing yards (120th). The Gamecocks' defense surrenders 21.1 points (39th) and 335.1 total yards (41st) per game, including 194.5 passing yards (36th) and 140.6 rushing yards (65th).

Ole Miss has its sights set on the CFP

Ole Miss (7-1 SU, 5-3 ATS, and 5-3 O/U) bounced back from its close loss to Georgia with a 34-26 victory over the Sooners. The Rebels are 4-1 in SEC play, tied with Georgia for second place in the conference standings.

Unlike its game against Georgia, Mississippi closed down the stretch against Oklahoma, outscoring the home team 9-0 in the final quarter. Senior QB Trinidad Chambliss passed for 315 yards and a touchdown, and sophomore RB Kewan Lacy rushed for two scores, as the Rebels gained 431 total yards. They also dominated the time of possession on the road, holding the football for more than 11 minutes longer than the Sooners.

“Same Georgia feeling. Crowd started coming alive," Ole Miss coach Lane Kiffin said. "And then obviously, much different response by us. And I didn’t feel like they ever, you know, kind of freaked out. And they had each other’s back.”

The dual-threat Chambliss leads Mississippi into action with 1,864 passing yards, 376 rushing yards, and 14 total touchdowns. He has completed 61.0 percent of his passes, averaging 8.9 yards per pass, and has only thrown one pick. Lacy is the team's top rusher (165 carries for 696 yards and 12 TDs), and senior WR Harrison Wallace III (26 receptions for 464 yards and two TDs) leads the receiving group. Five Rebels pass-catchers have accumulated at least 300 receiving yards.

Ole Miss scores 37.0 points per game (20th) and averages 430.4 total yards (36th), including 266.1 passing yards (34th) and 164.3 rushing yards (58th). The Rebels' defense allows 23.0 points (55th) and 317.0 total yards (28th) per game, including 171.1 passing yards (20th) and 145.9 rushing yards (74th).

South Carolina entered the season ranked in the top 15, as analysts expected a big season from Sellers and the SC defense. That hasn't been the case, as the Gamecocks haven't protected their QB (27 sacks allowed) and haven't created nearly as much havoc as last season. They have consistently started their drives backed up with poor field position, as well. Last week's meltdown against Alabama was the nail in the coffin for South Carolina's season, with road games against Ole Miss and Texas A&M looming, in my opinion.

Mississippi should feel comfortable heading into this matchup and is well-positioned to make a deep run in the College Football Playoff. The Rebels have an electric offense that the Gamecocks simply can't compete with. A 12.5-point spread isn't too large for this Ole Miss team.

Over/Under Pick for South Carolina vs. Ole Miss

I don't anticipate the Gamecocks putting up enough of a fight to bet on the over. In short, there won't be enough possessions for these teams to score more than 55 points, as Ole Miss should dominate the time of possession against a USC team ranked 121st nationally in average TOP with the third-worst average starting field position this season. The Rebels will jump on the board early with a few first-half scores before easing into a slower pace to drain the game clock. South Carolina's heart was ripped out of its chest by Alabama — don't expect this game to be close or competitive enough to bet on the over.
