South Florida slays power conference foe
The South Florida Bulls arrive in Miami full of confidence, coming off a thrilling 18-16 win at 13th-ranked Florida to improve to 2-0 on the season. The win was the second straight for the Bulls over a ranked opponent, following their victory over 25th-ranked Boise State in their home opener. This marks the first time in program history that South Florida has defeated ranked opponents in back-to-back games.
“We played harder for longer,” Head coach Alex Golesh said, “and we played smarter for longer.”
Quarterback Byrum Brown threw for 266 yards and led the final drive that resulted in kicker Nico Gramatica’s game-winning field goal from 20 yards out as time expired. The Bulls’ wideouts had a solid day with Keshaun Singleton finishing with two catches for 75 yards and a touchdown, and Christian Neptune hauling in a career-high five receptions for a career-high 39 yards while making his first-ever start. Kicker Nico Gramatica’s game-winning field goal was the first of his career.
Defensively, the Bulls held the Gators to their fewest points total since 2023. The Gators finally broke through in the fourth quarter, ending a streak of six straight scoreless quarters by the stingy South Florida defense. Linebacker Mac Harris led the way with 10 tackles, including a sack. An outstanding performance by punter Chase Leon also aided the defense. Leon matched a career-high with four punts over 50 yards and placed four punts inside the 20-yard line.
South Florida is now 2-0 with one final non-conference test before AAC play begins. They are ranked 57th in the country in points per game. They are 53rd in rushing the football and 38th through the air. On the defensive end, the Bulls are 22nd in points allowed per game. They are 56th against the run and 81st against the pass. The Bulls are eighth in the country in turnover margin and 99th in penalties per game. They are ranked just 120th in the nation in time of possession.
Key Injuries: No Injuries to Report
Miami readies for big test
The Miami Hurricanes are perfect after two weeks, defeating Notre Dame in the opener before pounding Bethune-Cookman 45-3 this past weekend at Hard Rock Stadium. The Hurricanes cruised to victory, playing on a short week, behind another steady performance from Georgia-transfer quarterback Carson Beck. They are now ready for back-to-back tough tests against in-state rivalry schools South Florida and Florida.
“Pretty solid job by our guys coming out handling business, really efficient by the offense scoring on every drive,” Head coach Mario Cristobal said. “Our defense did a really good job, too, although their team was obviously trying to snap the ball with a low count on the shot clock to try and limit the number of possessions that we had and once we played the ones in the second half of the first drive, I thought that was a good time to work on developing the other half of our roster.
“Lots of guys got their first opportunity and the opportunity to get significant playing time and play within our system. So, a lot of positives, a lot of things to fix, a lot of things to get better at.”
Beck was extremely efficient in the win, completing 22-of-24 passes for 267 yards and two touchdowns. He came out smoking, completing each of his first 15 passes of the game. That string set a school record for most consecutive completions to start a game, dating back to 1986. Wide receiver CJ Daniels was the recipient of both scores, grabbing five passes overall for 73 yards. Freshman standout Malachi Toney continued his outstanding start to his collegiate football career with six catches for 80 yards. Running back Mark Fletcher had a big night as well, rushing 11 times for 86 yards and two touchdowns. In all, the Hurricanes had 543 yards of total offense.
The Miami defense did its part as well in the one-sided victory. They held Bethune-Cookman to just 191 yards of total offense and kept them out of the end zone. In all, BCU was able to generate just 3.8 yards per play. The Hurricanes finished with 10 tackles for loss in the win, led by safety Keionte Scott’s three tackles for loss. Defensive end Rueben Bain contributed a sack and a forced fumble in the contest. Linebacker Kellen Wiley led the team with five tackles.
Miami ranks 52nd in the nation in points per game through two weeks. They are 80th on the ground and 75th through the air. On the defensive end, the Hurricanes are 69th in points allowed per game. They rank 37th against the run and 66th against the pass. The Hurricanes are 62nd in the country in penalties per game and 27th in time of possession.
Key Injuries: RB Jordan Lyle and WR Joshisa Trader are questionable.
South Florida at Miami
Point Spread pick for Miami
- Miami -17.5 (4 units)
South Florida has earned its Top 25 ranking after two quality wins to start the season, and the most impressive start in program history. On Saturday, however, they will be running into a different team entirely when they face the Hurricanes. Miami represents the first real challenge to the South Florida secondary, led by a veteran quarterback with a big-game pedigree. The Hurricanes are in the top 30 in time of possession, and that is due, in large part, to Beck’s ability to make smart decisions and make short, smart throws to move the chains. The Hurricanes also have a superior run defense that can turn South Florida into more of a one-dimensional team. One final note, the Bulls have gotten away with too many penalties over the first two games, ranked just 120th in the country in penalties per game. That will haunt them against a quality opponent like Miami.
Take Miami -17.5
Over/Under Pick for Colorado at Houston
- Under 56.5 (4 units)
Both teams are in the top half of scoring in the country after two weeks. The two defenses, however, will be the stars of the show on Saturday. The Hurricanes gave up just 24 points against a potent Notre Dame offense and held BCU to just three points last week. South Florida ranks 22nd in the nation in points allowed per game, holding two top-25 teams to a combined six scoreless quarters. The Hurricanes will put up some points here and likely win, but the game will be decided by the two defenses.
