South Florida Finding Answers on Defense
UAB managed 10 points against South Florida on Saturday, and the Bulls won 30-10. Previously, Kent State scored only two points in a 29-2 defeat on October 17. UTSA beat South Florida 31-24, and Temple had escaped with a 17-13 win a week earlier. South Florida also beat Bowling Green 14-6. Four of the Bulls' last five opponents have scored 17 points or fewer.
Michael Van Buren Jr. has completed 64.1% of his passes for 1,273 yards and six touchdowns without throwing an interception. Van Buren has protected the ball well. D.J. Crowther has carried 121 times for 578 yards and seven touchdowns. Bryson Rodgers leads the receivers with 345 yards, while Joshua Porter has added 274. Defensively, C.J. Hicks has five sacks and Michael Williams II has four. The Bulls have the pass rush to make East Carolina work for every yard.
Injuries: A. Branch and J. Alexis are questionable.

East Carolina Needs More From The Offense
East Carolina got back into the win column Saturday, beating Temple 17-9 at home. The Pirates held Temple to nine points, their strongest defensive result since beating North Carolina Central. Memphis had beaten East Carolina 41-34 in overtime, following a 30-17 overtime loss at UAB. Before those defeats, the Pirates beat Rice 28-12 and North Carolina Central 42-9. The Pirates have lost their share of close games. Friday gives them another chance against a conference opponent.
TJ Engleman Jr. has been the biggest threat, rushing for 689 yards on 105 carries. He's averaging 6.6 per carry with five touchdowns. The passing game has been less settled. Mitch Griffis has thrown four touchdowns and five interceptions, while Emory Williams has seven touchdown passes against two interceptions. Ray Ray Joseph Jr. leads the receivers with 303 yards and three touchdowns. On defense, DJ Johnson Jr. has 56 tackles and Ayden Duncanson has two interceptions. East Carolina needs help beyond Engleman.
Injuries: East Carolina has no injuries reported.
Key To The Game
South Florida's defensive turnaround meets a strong East Carolina rushing attack. Engleman is averaging 6.6 yards per carry, but the Bulls have allowed only 12 points across their last two games. If South Florida contains him, the Pirates may need more from their quarterbacks than they've delivered consistently. Van Buren's clean interception record is another difference. East Carolina has playmakers in the secondary, but the Bulls have done well at protecting the football.
South Florida vs East Carolina Game Pick
- South Florida Bulls -1.5 (-105)
East Carolina has home-field advantage, and Engleman can change a game with one long run. South Florida, however, has been playing better defense lately and has a quarterback who hasn't thrown an interception. The Bulls handled UAB comfortably, whereas the Pirates needed overtime against the same opponent and lost. Crowther gives South Florida balance on the ground, and Hicks can disrupt East Carolina's passing game. I'll back the Bulls to win and cover the short spread.
South Florida vs East Carolina Over/Under Pick
- Under 45.5 (-110)
The last two South Florida games finished with 40 and 31 total points. East Carolina's 17-9 win over Temple produced only 26, and both teams have relied on defense in their most recent victories. Crowther and Engleman should get plenty of carries, which could keep the clock moving. Neither side needs to throw constantly to move the ball. The Pirates have also struggled to convert possessions into touchdowns. I'm taking under 45.5.
