The Stanford Cardinal (1-2, 1-2 ATS, 1-2 O/U) take on the Virginia Cavaliers (2-1, 2-1 ATS, 3-0 O/U) in an ACC showdown on Saturday afternoon, and we have the details and the prediction. The Cardinal are confident after a surprising home win against Boston College last week.Β  The Cavaliers posted a home win against William & Mary.

Can Virginia take this ACC meeting by more than 16 points on Saturday evening? Check out the Stanford vs. Virginia prediction. When it comes to NCAAF selections, our College Football PicksΒ are stellar.

Stanford Rebounds with First Win

The Stanford Cardinal are searching for their second win of the season. Stanford was involved in a narrow clash to open the season. They were short in a 23-20 road loss against Hawaii. The second game brought in a tough opponent. Stanford was not competitive in an ugly 23-7 road defeat against BYU. Next, the Cardinal were sharp defensively in a convincing 30-23 home win against Boston College to begin ACC play last week in a huge upset. They were marked 14-point dogs.Β  The Cardinal have covered the spread in one of three games.

Ben Gulbranson is struggling under center. The senior QB has yet to reach 200 passing yards. He connected on 59% of his passes last week. Gulbrandon has recorded 437 passing yards with a 1:3 TD to INT ratio. The Stanford offense has also struggled on the ground. Micah Ford has been a key player on the ground. The sophomore RB was a positive in the defeat against Hawaii, reaching 110+ yards, and was dominant last week, racking up 157 rushing yards. Ford now has 291 rushing yards on the year.Β  Bryce Farrell netted 68 yards last week. The senior WR leads the squad with 140 receiving yards, while C.J. Williams has 62 yards. The Stanford offense ranked near the bottom in most categories before the win last week. They posted 400 + total yards last week and are only averaging 282 yards per game.

The Cardinal defense has been better than the offense and should help keep them in games in conference play. Mitch Leigber has made 10 combined tackles. They were not particularly dominant in the win against Boston College, squandering 389 total yards, but held strong on third downs. They are conceding an average of 342 yards after three games. The pass defense ranks 102nd, while the rush defense is a strength, coming in at 39th.

Stanford is averaging 17.7 points on the season, ranking them 120th. The Cardinal are conceding an average of 23.3 points, placing them 75th.

Virginia Dominates in Second Win of Season

The Virginia Cavaliers head into their second conference game of the season. Virginia opened the season with a dominating home win against Coastal Carolina. Virginia began conference play in week two and was dealt a 35-31 road defeat against NC State. The Cavaliers rebounded with an easy 55-16 home win against William & Mary of the FCS to cover the mammoth 30-point spread. The Cavaliers have covered in two of three clashes this season. Virginia is expected to be near the bottom of the ACC standings.

Chandler Morris has been steady. The senior QB posted 257 yards in the conference defeat against NC State. He has sharp numbers, connecting on 70% of his passes. Morris has reported 670 passing yards with four touchdowns against one pick on the season. Virginia will run more than pass. J’Mari Taylor rushed for 150 yards against NC State. The senior RB has amassed 213 yards on 6.5 yards per rush on the year. The receiving core is stacked. Trell Harris is in for a big season. The senior WR has already racked up 176 yards.Β  Cam Ross has 164 yards. Virginia put up a stunning 700 total yards last week and has averaged 556 yards in three games.

The Cavaliers' defense has been subpar. The unit squandered 416 total yards in the loss against NC State and 263 yards in the win against William & Mary of the FCS last week.Β  They are conceding an average of 311 yards per game. Landed Danely leads the squad with 18 tackles. The pass defense is rated 50th, and the rush defense stands at 59th.

Virginia is scoring an average of 44.7 points, good for 16th. The Cavaliers have held opponents to an average of just 19.3 points, placing them 59th in the country.

Stanford vs. Virginia Pick

Spread Pick for Stanford vs. Virginia

  • Stanford +16.5 (5 units)

The Stanford Cardinal are a confident group. They struggled in the first two games but came through when it mattered most in their first conference game of the season last week. Stanford was huge dogs in a big 30-20 home win against Boston College.Β  The Virginia Cavaliers are 2-1 on the year but have only played against one tough opponent so far, against NC State, and lost that game due to shaky defense, surrendering 35 points.

Furthermore, the Cardinal have a decent defense that will keep them in many games in ACC play. They only lost by three points in their first road game and were key in the win last week against a decent Boston College offense. Also, Virginia has opted for the run more than the pass. This is good news for the Cardinal rush defense, which has been among the best, conceding an average of only 103 rushing yards per game, ranking them 39th.

Over/Under Pick for Stanford vs. Virginia

  • Under 50 (5 units)

I expect this game to go under. Stanford does not have a strong offense. Gulbranson has only converted on 53% of his passes, and their rushing offense is considered below average. The offense has scored a total of just 23 points in its two road games against Hawaii and BYU. Stanford is only averaging 282 yards per game, which ranks them down at 25th in the country.

In addition, the Cardinal defense is decent and will play a key part in bringing this total under. This defense has held Hawaii to 23 points and a decent Boston College offense to 20 points in the win last week. Yes, Virginia has a potent offense, but it has only been challenged in one of its three games in the meeting against NC State, in which it dropped. The under is a convincing 8-1 in Stanford's past nine games in September.
