Syracuse Looking For An Offensive Spark

Syracuse heads into this matchup searching for any kind of spark on offense after another frustrating performance in a 27-10 loss to North Carolina. Freshman quarterback Joseph Filardi was thrown into the fire and struggled badly, completing just 4-of-18 passes for 39 yards. The Orange have been reeling since losing starter Steve Angeli to a season-ending Achilles injury, and the offense has averaged only 12 points per game over the last month. Running back Yasin Willis has been the lone bright spot, grinding out 61 yards against the Tar Heels, but without balance, defenses have been able to stack the box and dare Syracuse to throw.

The receiving corps has been quiet, with Johntay Cook II and Darius Johnson unable to make much of an impact last week. Syracuse’s offensive line hasn’t helped matters, allowing pressure that has rattled young quarterbacks and stalled drives. The coaching staff made changes after the UNC loss, but it remains unclear if those adjustments will pay off quickly. Against Miami’s defense, which ranks among the best in the ACC, the Orange will need to find creative ways to move the ball—whether through short passes, misdirection, or leaning heavily on Willis to keep the chains moving.

Defensively, Syracuse has shown more fight than the offense, but the unit has still been inconsistent. They gave up 267 passing yards to UNC and struggled to get off the field on third downs. Linebacker Antoine Deslauriers and safety Braheem Long Jr. have been steady, but the secondary has been vulnerable to big plays. The Orange have forced just 10 turnovers all season, ranking near the bottom nationally, and that lack of disruption has put too much pressure on the offense to keep games close. Against Miami’s balanced attack, Syracuse’s defense will need to play above its usual level to avoid another lopsided result.

Miami Suffers Big Loss To SMU

Miami comes into this game licking its wounds after a stunning 26-20 overtime loss to SMU, a defeat that damaged their playoff hopes and exposed some flaws. Quarterback Carson Beck threw for 274 yards and two touchdowns, but he also tossed two costly interceptions, including one in overtime that set up SMU’s winning score. Running back Mark Fletcher Jr. was effective with 84 rushing yards, and wideout Joshisa Trader added 81 yards and a touchdown, but penalties and missed opportunities doomed the Hurricanes. It was a reminder that even talented teams can stumble when execution slips.

Offensively, Miami has been productive but not overwhelming, averaging just over 32 points per game. Beck has completed more than 72 percent of his passes this season, and his chemistry with Malachi Toney and CJ Daniels has given the Hurricanes multiple reliable options. Fletcher provides balance on the ground, but injuries have thinned the rotation, and Miami has been held under 28 points in four of its last five games. Against Syracuse’s struggling defense, the Hurricanes should find opportunities, but the question is whether they can finish drives cleanly and avoid the mistakes that cost them against SMU.

Defensively, Miami remains one of the best units in the country, allowing just 15.6 points per game. The front seven, led by Rueben Bain Jr. and Akheem Mesidor, has been dominant against the run, holding opponents under 80 rushing yards per game. The secondary has been solid as well, with Keionte Scott and Jakobe Thomas providing stability in coverage. Against Syracuse’s sputtering offense, Miami’s defense should have the upper hand, but the Hurricanes will still need to stay disciplined and avoid giving the Orange short fields through turnovers or penalties. If Miami plays to its strengths, this game sets up as a chance to bounce back and reassert themselves in the ACC race.

Syracuse vs Miami Pick

Syracuse vs Miami Spread Pick

  • Miami -28 (3 Units)

Miami -28 feels justified because the Hurricanes have the clear talent edge and motivation working in their favor. Carson Beck has been efficient all season, completing over 72 percent of his passes, and he has multiple weapons in Joshisa Trader, Malachi Toney, and CJ Daniels to stretch Syracuse’s secondary. Mark Fletcher Jr. provides balance on the ground, and Miami’s offensive line has been steady enough to control the trenches. Syracuse, meanwhile, has struggled mightily since losing Steve Angeli, averaging barely double digits in scoring over the past month. With Joseph Filardi still finding his footing and the Orange unable to generate explosive plays, Miami’s defense should have little trouble keeping them in check while the offense steadily builds a big lead.

This matchup also carries the added layer of revenge, as Syracuse stunned Miami last season and knocked the Hurricanes out of the playoff picture. That kind of loss lingers, and it’s hard to imagine Mario Cristobal’s team not coming in focused and ready to make a statement. Miami’s defense, led by Rueben Bain Jr. and Akheem Mesidor, has been dominant against the run, and Syracuse’s one-dimensional attack plays right into their strength. With the Hurricanes looking to erase the sting of last year’s upset and reassert themselves in the ACC race, laying the 28 points feels like the right side in what could turn into a statement win at Hard Rock Stadium.

Syracuse vs Miami Over/Under Pick

  • Under 46.5 (1 Unit)

The under 46.5 makes sense because Miami’s defense has been one of the best in the ACC, holding opponents under 16 points per game, while Syracuse’s offense has been stuck in neutral since losing Steve Angeli and averaging barely double digits over the past month. The Hurricanes’ front seven should control the line of scrimmage, and with the Orange struggling to sustain drives, this matchup projects as a one-sided affair where Miami builds a lead but the pace and defensive dominance keep the total under the number.
