Horned Frogs Looking to Pick Up Road Victory

TCU bounced back from a loss to Kansas State on the road as they outgunned Baylor at home in their previous contest last Saturday. The Horned Frogs improved to 5-2 overall and stand 2-2 in Big 12 play on the year. Against Baylor, TCU was down 7-0 after the opening quarter before outscoring the Bears 21-3 in the second quarter to take a 21-10 edge. The Horned Frogs never let the Bears even again en route to the win. TCU was outgained 439-427 in total offense, gave up 27 first downs while picking up 21 and lost time of possession by a 31:48 to 28:12 margin yet still prevailed. They forced four turnovers while committing just one, which turned into a scoop-six for the Bears in the contest.

On the season, TCU ranks 7th in the FBS in passing offense with 309.3 yards per game, while they are 102nd in rushing offense by grinding out 128 yards per contest. The Horned Frogs are 26th in the nation in scoring offense by putting up 36.3 points per contest, while they are 86th in scoring defense as they give up 26.3 points per game. Josh Hoover is 161 of 246 passing for 2,124 yards with 21 touchdowns against six interceptions, along with seven rushing yards plus two scores. Ken Seals (four of six, 24 yards, INT) is the backup quarterback. Jeremy Payne is the teamโ€™s third-leading rusher with 36 carries for 147 yards plus two scores on the season. Trent Battle (33 carries, 234 yards, four TD), Nate Palmer (15 carries, 90 yards) and Kevorian Barnes (74 carries, 391 yards, three TD) are all in the mix. Eric McAlister is the teamโ€™s second-leading receiver with 28 catches for a team-high 603 yards and seven scores. Jordan Dwyer (32 catches, 468 yards, three TD), Joseph Manjack IV (21 receptions, 309 yards, two TD) and tight end DJ Rogers (23 catches, 226 yards, two TD) are other key contributors in the passing game. Kyle Lemmermann is six of six on extra point attempts and two of two on field goals with a long of 33 this season. Nate McCashland is 29 of 29 on extra point attempts and is one of three on field goal attempts on the year with a long of 27.

Lemmermann (leg) is out here. Payne (undisclosed) is doubtful for this contest.

West Virginia Trying to Rebound at Home

West Virginia suffered their fourth straight loss as they were clobbered on the road by UCF last week in their previous contest. The Mountaineers fell to 2-5 overall and are 0-4 in Big 12 action on the season. Against UCF, West Virginia trailed 14-0 after the opening quarter and got within 14-7 at the half before the wheels fell off. The Mountaineers were blitzed 21-0 in the third quarter and the rout was on. West Virginia was destroyed 578-210 in total offense, gave up 21 first downs while picking up 19 and lost time of possession by a 33:07 to 26:53 margin. Those numbers far overshadowed that they forced two turnovers while committing one in the game.

The Mountaineers are 126th in the nation in passing offense as they average 158.7 yards per game through the air on the year. West Virginia stands 33rd in rushing offense as they put up 195.4 yards per contest on the ground this year. The Mountaineers are 113th of the 136 FBS teams to play this season in scoring offense with an average of 21 points per game. West Virginia is 115th in scoring defense as they allow an average of 30.9 points per game on the year. Nicco Marchiol is 66 of 98 passing for 720 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions while adding 56 yards and a score on the ground. Khalil Wilkins (15 of 31, 176 yards, TD, two INT, 243 rush yards, two TD), Scotty Fox Jr. (11 of 25, 165 yards, TD, two INT, 94 rush yards, TD) and Jaylen Henderson (seven of 18, 50 yards, 146 yards, TD) have all seen action under center. Tye Edwards (27 carries, 143 yards, three TD), Jahiem White (24 carries, 133 yards, three TD), Diore Hubbard (35 carries, 124 yards, three TD) and Cyncir Bowers (25 carries, 103 yards, TD) have all toted the rock in the ground game. Cam Vaughn leads the team with 21 catches for 335 yards and three scores. Tight end Grayson Barnes (13 catches, 132 yards, TD), Rodney Gallagher III (15 receptions, 137 yards) and Justin Smith-Brown (six grabs, 106 yards) are each over the century mark in receiving yards. Kade Hensley is 18 of 19 on extra point attempts and five of seven on field goal attempts with a long of 45 this season.

Marchiol (foot) is out indefinitely. Edwards (hip) is out for the year while Henderson (undisclosed) is expected to miss this game as well.

TCU vs. West Virginia Pick

Spread Pick for TCU vs. West Virginia

  • TCU -15 (4 units)

West Virginia has hit the skids with four straight losses and is missing two of the four guys to play quarterback this season, in addition to a running back. The Mountaineers have sputtered without Marchiol and things donโ€™t portend well for them here. TCU is an explosive offensive attack with the capability to pile up points. We saw the Horned Frogs torch Baylor in their previous contest. Hoover is a massive upgrade over whoever is under center for West Virginia. The Mountaineers give up 247.1 yards per game through the air this season. Hoover goes for 300 easily and the Horned Frogs win this game in a blowout.

Over/Under Pick for TCU vs. West Virginia

  • Over 55.5 (4 units)

TCU comes into this game having seen the over post a 4-3 mark in their seven games on the year. The Horned Frogs have gone over the mark in two of their three road contests this season, with at least 51 points scored in each of those contests. TCU is a solid scoring offense, putting up at least 24 points in every game and at least 35 in five of their seven tilts. West Virginia comes into this game with three straight overs on the books, and they have surrendered at least 41 points in four straight contests. Given the Mountaineersโ€™ injury issues, they might not score much but the Horned Frogs will take advantage of their defensive woes. This game winds up over the total as a result.
