Tennessee Fights for Playoff

The Tennessee Volunteers are ranked 20th with just two games to go, and are hoping to make one final push for the College Football Playoff. It is a long shot, but the Volunteers are hoping wins over Florida and #14 Vanderbilt to close the season could put them in the discussion for a bid. They have avoided bad losses, with all three of their defeats coming against ranked opponents. Last week against New Mexico State, Joey Aguilar passed for 204 yards and a touchdown in the blowout win.

Aguilar is their 6’3 senior quarterback who has been under center all season. He transferred in to play his final season of college football with Tennessee after passing for over 3,000 in each of the last two seasons with Appalachian State. So far this year, he has 2,941 yards with a 22-10 TD-INT ratio, and has completed 66.3% of his passes. He can move when needed, but has just a total of 119 rushing yards on the season. Their top running back has been DeSean Bishop, a sophomore has 770 rushing yards with 10 touchdowns. Bishop’s best game of the season came against Arkansas, where he ran for 146 yards and a touchdown.

The Volunteers have several options in the passing game, as three of their wideouts have over 650 receiving yards on the year. Their top option has been 6’5 junior Chris Brazzell II with 873 yards on 52 catches and eight touchdowns. Their defense has 33 sacks, led by defensive lineman Dominic Bailey with 5.5. They have eight total interceptions, with Ty Redmond at the top with two.

Key Injuries for Tennessee:

  • TE Miles Kitselman (undisclosed) is out. Has 25 catches for 250 yards.
  • RB Peyton Lewis (undisclosed) is questionable. Has 290 yards rushing and seven TDs.

Gators Lose Three Straight

The Florida Gators will miss out on a bowl game this season, as they have three wins with only two games remaining on their schedule as interim coach Billy Gonzales to help navigate the team through the rest of the season. The Gators are more dangerous in The Swamp, as they took down #9 Texas and Mississippi State at home this season. Despite those successes, they have still lost their last three, going down on the road against Kentucky and #7 Ole Miss, while mixing in a home loss against #5 Georgia. In their most recent game, DJ Lagway passed for 218 yards and a touchdown in the loss to Ole Miss.

Lagway has not developed into the star quarterback the Gators thought they were getting, but he can still show flashes of brilliance from time to time. The 6’3, 245-pound sophomore still has plenty of time to grow, and has passed for 1,980 yards with an unimpressive 12-13 TD-INT ratio. Lagway hits 63.2% of his passes and has rushed for just 97 yards this season. Jadan Baugh has been a bright spot for the offense; the sophomore back has 808 yards and six touchdowns, including a 150-yard game against Mississippi State.

Vernell Brown III has been their top option in the passing game. The 5’11 freshman has 33 catches for 473 yards, but has yet to grab his first career touchdown pass. The defense has 21 sacks on the season, led by edge rusher Kamran James with 3.5. They also have nine interceptions, with Jordan Castle picking off two in the secondary.

Key Injuries for Florida:

Edge George Gumbs Jr. (undisclosed) is out. Has 2.5 sacks and 31 tackles.

Tennessee vs. Florida Picks and Predictions

Spread pick for Tennessee vs. Florida

  • Florida +4.5 (5 units)

The Gators still have some fight left, especially when they are at home in the Swamp. They are getting 4.5 points here at the time of publishing, and they have not lost by more than four points at home all season. They took down #9 Texas at home, and also only lost to #5 Georgia by four points when the Bulldogs visited Gainesville. When Tennessee lost to Oklahoma, the Volunteers gave up 192 yards on the ground, getting diced up by the run game. This will play in Florida’s favor, as Jaden Baugh is one of the top running backs in the conference, and this will take the pressure of Lagway to make big plays through the air. The Gators are going to keep this one close under the bright lights.

Take Florida plus the points

Over/Under Pick for Tennessee vs. Florida

  • Under 57.5 (4 units)

Florida’s offense has not been lighting up the scoreboard lately, and they know they will need to slow this game down if they want to keep it close. Florida has not scored over 24 points in any of their last five games, so they have to rely on their defense and run game to keep this one in striking distance. Tennessee can struggle against the run, which will allow the Gators to prolong drives and run more clock. Even when they have a bad record, Florida still gets big crowd, and this will be a difficult environment for Tennessee to stay composed. This will be a low scoring game.
