Red Raiders Seeking to Remain Unbeaten

Texas Tech maintained their unblemished record as they put the boots to Kansas at home in their previous contest last Saturday. The Red Raiders improved to 6-0 overall and stand 3-0 in Big 12 play, leaving them tied with BYU and Cincinnati for the top spot. Against Kansas, Texas Tech jumped in front 21-0 with 11:03 to play in the first half, only to see the margin trimmed to 21-17 at the half. The Red Raiders regrouped, outscoring the Jayhawks 21-0 in the second half, to put the game away. Texas Tech outgained Kansas 505-319 in a game where both teams recorded 22 first downs and turned the ball over once. The Red Raiders were clobbered 36:12 to 23:48 in time of possession but still coasted to the victory.

The Red Raiders enter this contest 3rd in the nation in passing offense with an average of 325.3 yards per game, while they are 14th in rushing offense by grinding out 232.8 yards per game on the ground. Texas Tech is 2nd in the FBS in scoring offense by averaging 47.5 points per contest, while they are 7th in scoring defense by allowing 12.2 points per game. Behren Morton has completed 104 of 152 passes for 1,501 yards with 13 touchdowns against three interceptions on the year. Will Hammond (38 of 57, 411 yards, four TD, two INT, 231 rush yards, four TD) and Mitch Griffis (four of five, 40 yards, TD, 21 rushing yards) are next up on the depth chart. Cameron Dickey leads the team on the ground with 91 carries for 591 yards and eight scores this season. Adam Hill (24 carries, 207 yards) and J’Koby Williams (68 carries, 358 yards, four TD) are secondary backs in the system. Terrance Carter Jr. is tied for second on the team in the passing game with 23 receptions for 297 yards and five touchdowns. Caleb Douglas (24 grabs, 395 yards, TD) and Coy Eakin (24 catches, 341 yards, three TD), Williams (15 catches, 227 yards, TD) and Reggie Virgil (23 receptions, 286 yards, four TD) are also over 200 receiving yards this season. Stone Harrington is 17 of 17 on extra point attempts and eight of 10 on field goal attempts with a long of 58 this year. Upton Bellenfant is 12 of 13 on extra points and six of six on field goals with a long of 33. Ian Hershey is two of two on extra points and has not attempted a field goal this season.

Morton (ankle) was injured in the Kansas game and is questionable here. If he can’t go, Hammond would get the call under center. Depth receivers Tristian Gentry and Roy Alexander are both questionable as well.

Arizona State Looking to Earn Home Upset

Arizona State saw their three-game win streak snapped as they were pounded on the road by Utah last Saturday in their previous contest. The Sun Devils dropped to 4-2 overall and stand 2-1 in the Pac-12 on the year. Against Utah, Arizona State gave up an opening drive touchdown to the Utes and never got even again. The Sun Devils trailed 7-3 after the opening quarter, 21-3 at the half and 28-3 early in the third quarter en route to the loss. Arizona State was outgained 412-259 in total offense in a game where both teams recorded 23 first downs. There were no turnovers in the contest, though the Sun Devils owned a 36:26 to 23:34 edge in time of possession in the loss.

The Sun Devils are averaging 193.8 yards per game through the air this season (101st in the nation) while they run for 203 yards per contest, which is 28th in the country. Arizona State is 85th in the FBS in scoring offense with an average of 26 points per game and they stand 70th in scoring defense by allowing 24.7 points per contest. Sam Leavitt is 99 of 157 passing for 1,037 yards with eight touchdowns against three picks while ranking second on the team with 281 yards and five scores this season. Jeff Sims (18 of 38, 124 yards, 74 rush yards) is the backup quarterback. Raleek Brown is the leading rusher for the team with 91 carries for 573 yards and two touchdowns this season. Kyson Brown (18 carries, 106 yards) and Kanye Udoh (43 carries, 169 yards, TD) have seen work as well. In the passing game, Jordyn Tyson (47 receptions, 523 yards, seven TD) is the team’s top target. Kyson Brown (eight catches, 72 yards), tight end Chamon Metayer (17 receptions, 160 yards, TD), Derek Eusebio (five catches, 105 yards) and Raleek Brown (21 grabs, 124 yards) are the only other players with more than 100 receiving yards this season. Jesus Gomez is 16 of 16 on extra points and 12 of 16 on field goal attempts with a long of 51 on the year.

Leavitt and Kyson Brown are both battling injuries and are considered questionable for this contest.

Texas Tech vs. Arizona State Pick

Spread Pick for Texas Tech vs. Arizona State

  • Texas Tech -8 (4 units)

Texas Tech has piled up points this season, and even when Morton has been knocked out of games, the offense hasn’t missed much of a beat with Hammond running the offense. The Red Raiders are excellent at moving the ball through the air and on the ground, which will seriously test Arizona State’s defense. On the flip side, the Sun Devils are going to be challenged running the ball against the Red Raiders, who have allowed just 62.5 yards per game and 2.1 yards per carry on the ground this year. With Leavitt being a question mark here, one has to be concerned about Arizona State’s chances, even at home. Look for Texas Tech to roll to another win to remain unbeaten and keep pace in the Big 12 race.

Over/Under Pick for Texas Tech vs. Arizona State

  • Over 49.5 (4 units)

Texas Tech has stayed under the number in three of their six games in relation to the total, even though they are second in the nation in scoring offense.  Texas Tech has scored at least 34 points in every game this season and cracked the 40-point mark four times. It’s hard to see the Sun Devils slowing the Red Raiders down all that much here, so if Arizona State can generate any kind of offense, this game winds up over the number.
