Texas Tech Hits the Road
Life is easy for major programs when they open the season with three cupcake games at home. No disrespect to Oregon State, but there is a reason they were left out of conference expansion. Texas Tech's ther wins over Arkansas Pine Bluff and Kent State do not look like much on paper either. Early in the Big 12 schedule, all teams feel like they have a shot at the conference title, including the Red Raiders. In their last game, Texas Tech got 464 passing yards from Behren Morton in the win.
Morton has been a Red Raider for the past five years, while taking snaps as a starter for at least four of those seasons. Last year was his most successful outing, as he finished the year with 3,335 passing yards and a 27-8 TD-INT ratio. So far this season, he has already passed for 923 yards with 11 touchdowns to just one interception, though the competition has been light so far. The Red Raiders have shared carries out of the backfield, with Adam Hill leading the way with 207 rushing yards as a 6'1 freshman.
Coy Eakin has been their top target in the passing game; he has 11 catches for 229 yards and three touchdowns so far on the year. Eakin had 49 catches last season with Tech as a sophomore. Linebacker Jacob Rodriguez leads the team with 17 tackles so far, with Romello Height already getting 2.5 sacks off the edge.

First Big Test for the Utes
These two Big 12 teams are ready for a massive showdown in this noon kickoff, but the Utah Utes are already more battle-tested than their opponent. Utah opened the season against former rival UCLA from the Big Ten, but smoked them on the road to a count of 43-10. They also went into Wyoming and easily grabbed another road victory with a 31-6 margin. In that game, the Utes got 230 passing yards from Devon Dampier in the win.
Dampier is their 5'11 junior quarterback who just came in from the transfer portal from New Mexico. He passed for 2,768 yards last season, but figures to pass for more this year as he is already at 628 yards with an impeccable 7-0 TD-INT ratio. Dampier is mobile, as he has already rushed for 198 yards this year. Dampier is actually the team's leading rusher, but Wayshawn Parker is not far behind as a 5'10 sophomore with 192 yards and two touchdowns.
In the passing game, Utah relies on Ryan Davis and his 19 catches for 171 yards with a touchdown. He is a 5'11 senior who followed his quarterback over from New Mexico, and is playing his first season with the Utes. Their defense is led by defensive end John Henry Daley, who has been a menace this season with his five sacks off the edge.
Texas Tech vs. Utah Prediction and Picks
Spread Pick for Texas Tech vs. Utah
- Texas Tech +3.5 (5 units)
The money in Vegas can often tell a tale in these early matchups. Utah opened as a 4.5 point favorite, and was quickly bet down to just a 3.5 point favorite. With this line still above a field goal, Texas Tech is the play here. The Red Raiders may have had an easy road here, but they have consistency in their offense as they return their quarterback and many of their top weapons. The same cannot be said for Utah, as they have a new quarterback who will be playing his first game in the Big 12. It is difficult to move the spread a whole point without major injury news, follow the money and take the Red Raiders.
Take Texas Tech with the points.
Over/Under Pick for Texas Tech vs. Utah
- Under 56.5
This number has gotten too high. This is a Big Noon Kickoff, but keep in mind these teams are not on the East Coast. Utah is in the Mountain Time Zone, meaning this will be a 10 AM kickoff locally for these college athletes. They will not be at the top of their game and will struggle to adapt to the early start. Utah is still working with Dampier as their new quarterback, and this will be his toughest test by far. Texas Tech had an easy schedule up to this game; do not expect a big number here from either squad.
Take the under.
