Texas Holding On to Playoff Hopes

The Texas Longhorns won their fourth straight game last Saturday, hanging on for a 34-31 win over 9th-ranked Vanderbilt at home. The Longhorns jumped out to a 34-10 lead heading into the fourth quarter and survived three Vanderbilt touchdowns in the final 15 minutes. The Longhorns now travel to Athens to take on the 5th-ranked Bulldogs.

“Almost a playoff type game in November,” Texas coach Steve Sarkisian said. “A great win ... You’ve got to play 60 minutes in this conference for sure.”

Quarterback Arch Manning came back from a concussion the week prior, to lead the Longhorns to victory. Manning came out gunning, throwing a 75-yard touchdown pass to Ryan Wingo on the first play of the game. He finished 25-of-33 for 328 yards passing and three touchdowns. Wingo finished with two grabs for 89 yards, including the touchdown. Fellow wideout Emmett Mosley V had seven catches for 69 yards and a touchdown. The Longhorns finished 7-of-11 on third down conversions. In all, the Longhorns had 428 yards of total offense.

Defensively, the Longhorns played solidly for three quarters, holding the high-powered Vandy offense to just 10 points. The Longhorns finished with 10 tackles for loss, including six sacks. Ethan Burke led the way with two sacks, three tackles for loss overall. Derek Williams Jr. led the way with eight tackles. In all, the Longhorns allowed 423 yards of total offense, including 365 yards through the air.

On the defensive end, the Wildcats settled down in the second half. After allowing 17 points at halftime, they held Kansas to just three points in the second half to allow the offense to come back. The Wildcats gave up a total of 369 yards of total offense. They held Kansas to just 6-of-17 on third down conversions. Max Harris, Taye Brown, and Dalton Johnson led the Wildcats with nine tackles apiece. Arizona did not have any sacks and didn’t force any turnovers in the come-from-behind win.

The Longhorns will likely need to win out to earn a spot in the College Football playoffs for the second straight season. They come into this matchup ranked 46th in the nation in points per game. They are just 89th in rushing and 46th in passing. The Longhorns are 76th in red zone offense. They are also 76th in sacks allowed per game this season. On the defensive end, the Longhorns are 10th in the country in points allowed per game. They are second against the run and 83rd against the pass. The Bulldogs are fifth in the country and red zone defense. Texas is fifth in the country in sacks per game. They have struggled with penalties, ranked 117th in penalty yards per game. They are 10th in turnover margin.

Key Injuries: WR Aaron Butler, DB Michael Taaffe, and WR Ryan Wingo are questionable.

Bulldogs Eyeing Another Playoff

The Georgia Bulldogs won their fifth straight game on Saturday, downing Mississippi State on the road, 41-21. Trailing 7-3 after one quarter, the Bulldogs poured in 35 points in the second and third quarters to pull away. The Bulldogs are now 8-1 and in a prime position to earn a spot in the SEC title game.

“Really proud of our guys. I thought that was a total team effort in a really tough place to play,” Georgia coach Kirby Smart said. “I have a lot of respect for Jeff (Lebby). This team has played great all year. We had good leadership this week and our conditioning was the difference.”

Quarterback Gunnar Stockton finished the game 18-of-29 for 264 yards and three touchdowns in the victory. He also rushed for 31 yards on six carries. The Bulldogs’ ground game was outstanding on Saturday. They finished with 305 yards rushing as a team, led by Nate Frazier’s 181 yards rushing and a touchdown on just 12 carries. Zachariah Branch had eight catches for 68 yards and a touchdown and fellow wideout Noah Thomas had three grabs for 78 yards and a touchdown. In all, the Bulldogs had a whopping 567 yards of total offense and 30 first downs. They finished an impressive 7-of-12 on third down conversions.

The Bulldogs gave up a touchdown on Mississippi State’s opening possession but then clamped down defensively. They held Miss State scoreless on six straight possessions. The defense forced one turnover and had six tackles for loss, including three sacks. KJ Bolden led the Bulldogs with 10 tackles in the game. Raylen Wilson had six tackles, including 1.5 sacks. The Bulldogs held Mississippi State to 18 first downs and 323 yards of total offense.

The Bulldogs hold their own destiny in their hands. If the Bulldogs win out, they’ll be in the College Football playoffs again for the fourth time since 2017. The Bulldogs come into this game ranked 18th in the nation in points per game. They are 33rd in rushing and 51st in passing. The Bulldogs are ranked 47th in red zone offense. The team is ranked 19th in sacks allowed per game, critical against the relentless pass rush of the Longhorns. On the defensive end, the Bulldogs are 29th in points allowed per game. They are 17th against the run and 56th against the pass. The Bulldogs are ranked 29th in red zone defense. They have struggled to get to the quarterback this season, ranked 125th in the country in sacks per game. They are 44th in penalty yards per game and 76th in turnover margin.

Key Injuries: WR Thomas Blacksheare, OL Earnest Greene III, WR Talyn Taylor, and WR Colbie Young are questionable.

Texas at Georgia

Point Spread pick for Texas at Georgia

  • Texas +5.5 (4 units)

I’ll take the points in a game that looks like a one-possession contest. Before busting out against Mississippi State, Georgia was in back-to-back one-possession games against Mississippi and Florida. The Longhorns have the type of defense that can keep the Bulldogs at bay, particularly with one of the nation’s best rushes. The Longhorns have also done an excellent job protecting the football, ranked 10th in the country in turnover margin. Manning has looked like the quarterback who was a preseason Heisman Trophy favorite over the last two weeks. He will have time in the pocket against Georgia’s subpar pass rush. Look for him to exploit the Bulldogs’ up-and-down secondary and keep this one tight.

Take the Longhorns +5.5

Over/Under Pick for Texas at Georgia

  • Over 48.5

Both teams are in the top 50 in the country in points per game. Texas has gone over the number in two straight games. The Bulldogs have gone over the number in two of their last three games. The conditions should be perfect on Saturday night in Athens, with temperatures expected in the mid 60s. Expect some fireworks in this game featuring two of the elite programs in college football.

Take the over.
