Rockets Seeking to Soar to Third Straight Win

Toledo won their second straight game after dropping their opener to Kentucky, as it creamed an overmatched Morgan State squad last week. The Rockets improved to 2-1 overall on the year and look to pick up a third straight win as they open conference play. Against Morgan State, Toledo led just 3-0 after the opening quarter before erupting for a school-record 43 points in the second quarter to turn things into a rout. The Rockets dominated to the tune of a 557-56 edge in total offense, a 31-4 bulge in first downs, and held a 33:59 to 26:01 margin in the contest. Both teams turned the ball over once.

On the year, the Rockets are 47th in the nation in passing offense with 256 yards per contest, while they are 35th in rushing offense with 208.7 yards per game. Toledo is 30th in the FBS in scoring offense as they put up 40.3 points per contest and 36th in scoring defense, as they allow an average of 15.3 points per contest this season. Tucker Gleason is 43 of 69 passing for 599 yards with four touchdowns and one interception while adding 23 yards plus a score on the ground. John Allan Richter (15 of 23, 139 yards, three TD, INT, 12 rush yards) and Kalieb Osborne (four of six, 30 yards, 49 rush yards, TD) have seen limited action. Chip Trayanum leads the team in the run game with 39 carries for 248 yards and four scores this season. Kenji Christian (23 carries, 139 yards, two TD) and Willie Shaw III (eight carries, 49 yards) are in the mix as well. Junior Vandeross III leads the team with 18 catches for 255 yards and four scores this season. Javon Brown (six receptions, 133 yards), Jacob Petersen (five grabs, 82 yards), Trayvon Rudolph (seven catches, 77 yards) and Trayanum (six receptions, 55 yards, TD) are good targets in the passing game. Dylan Cunanan is 14 of 14 on extra point attempts and two of two on field goal attempts with a long of 32 on the year. Anthony Ruggles is one of one on extra point attempts and has not attempted a field goal this season.

Western Michigan Trying to Get in Win Column

Western Michigan was flattened on the road last week as they were no match for #9 Illinois. The Broncos dropped to 0-3 on the season and look to find a way to break into the win column. Against Illinois, Western Michigan hung tough defensively for a half as they were down just 10-0 at intermission before fading. The Broncos simply were unable to sustain drives as they were beaten 358-204 in total offense, allowed 20 first downs while recording 12, lost time of possession by a 31:33 to 28:27 margin in the game. Western Michigan went just three of 14 on third down and failed to convert their two fourth-down attempts.

On the season, the Broncos are 126th in the nation in passing offense by averaging 122 yards per contest, while they are 110th in rushing offense with an average of 119.3 yards per game this season. Western Michigan is 132nd in the FBS in scoring offense as they put up 12 points per game, while they are 115th in scoring defense by allowing 31.3 points per contest. Toledo vs. Western Michigan Pick

Spread Pick for Toledo vs. Western Michigan

  • Toledo -13.5 (4 units)

Western Michigan has struggled on both sides of the ball this season. Thirty of their 36 points this season came in an overtime loss to North Texas. The Broncos don’t have much in the way of a passing game to bail them out if they fall behind and their run game sputters to average just 3.1 yards per carry. That’s a bad matchup when you’re facing a Toledo squad that has hung 105 points in its last two games while running for 567 yards and eight scores in that span. The Rockets are explosive offensively and they can do damage through the air and on the ground. With Western Michigan’s issues on both sides of the ball, Toledo wins this one in a romp to make it three straight wins.

Over/Under Pick for Toledo vs. Western Michigan

  • Over 50.5 (4 units)

Toledo comes in with the over, posting a 2-1 mark on the season. The Rockets have seen totals of 66 and 60 points in the last two weeks, thanks to their offensive firepower, and nearly went over the number set at the books by themselves. Western Michigan has an over (against North Texas) sandwiched by a pair of unders. It’s important to note that the Broncos’ unders came against a pair of Big Ten teams in Michigan State and Illinois. They went over in their lone game against a Group of Five school. Toledo should have little trouble moving the ball and putting up points. We know MACtion is usually action packed so look for this game to wind up over the number.
