Troy vs James Madison Picks, Prediction, Odds, and Line Movement for Thursday October 29 2026

James Madison returns to Bridgeforth Stadium looking to correct its first loss of the season, while Troy arrives trying to avoid a fourth consecutive road defeat. The Dukes' prolific home offense will be tested without its leading rusher against a Troy defensive front that can pressure quarterbacks.

Both programs lost last week. James Madison fell 34-31 in overtime at Appalachian State, despite outgaining the Mountaineers, while Troy squandered a second-half advantage in a 21-14 home loss to ULM. Thursday's ESPN2 kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. ET in Harrisonburg, Virginia.

James Madison -18.5 is the relevant entry point for a favorite wager. It avoids laying the full 19.5 available at other books and offers slightly more room for a late Troy score. Troy's quarterback health and the absence of a prominent James Madison runner are material matchup facts, not proof of who moved the market.

Troy Trojans: Defense Faces an Uphill Task

Troy has scored only 11 points per game through three road losses, a sharp contrast to the team's better offensive moments at home. The Trojans were limited to 10 points at Utah State, six at Louisiana and 17 at Missouri. Asking this offense to play from behind against James Madison is dangerous because it could put too much pressure on an inconsistent passing game.

Quarterback Goose Crowder has dealt with an upper-body injury and exited two consecutive games, with Tucker Kilcrease taking meaningful snaps. The Thursday Sun Belt availability update lists Crowder as available, although that does not guarantee full mobility or exclusive playing time.

The Trojans do have a defense capable of affecting a game through negative plays. Donnie Smith has produced a sack in nine of his last 10 appearances, and Keno Jones has been active behind the line of scrimmage. Troy has allowed an average of 27 points and 331.7 yards in its three road games, much better than the offensive road numbers suggest.

James Madison Dukes: Home Production and Personnel Losses

James Madison has won 11 straight home games, including all four this season. Its home scoring average is 50.3 points, compared with 13.8 allowed, and the offense has averaged 491.8 yards per game in Harrisonburg. Those numbers are particularly relevant against an opponent that has struggled to score away from home. The Dukes put up 49 in their most recent home game against Georgia State and previously beat Marshall 45-17 at Bridgeforth Stadium.

Last Thursday's loss at App State was not evidence that the offense had collapsed. Camden Coleman completed 22 of 39 passes for 232 yards and a touchdown, while JC Evans added 99 passing yards and a touchdown on only seven attempts. The Dukes gained 423 total yards and held App State to 81 rushing yards before losing in overtime. Coleman also ran for a late touchdown to force the extra period.

The major adjustment is in the backfield. George Pettaway, who entered as the Sun Belt's leading rusher at 103 yards per game, is out after being injured against App State. James Madison must replace his production through other runners and quarterback involvement, rather than assuming identical rushing efficiency. Wayne Knight has hurt Troy before, rushing for 212 yards in last season's 31-14 conference-title win, but that historical performance does not guarantee Thursday's distribution.

Troy vs James Madison Best Bet

Best Bet: James Madison -18.5

The strongest difference is what each offense has done in the venue most relevant to Thursday. James Madison has repeatedly scored in bunches at home, while Troy has been held to 11 points per road contest. The visitors' pass rush may produce some stalled drives, but their own offense must do considerably more than it has managed away from Troy to keep this within two touchdowns. James Madison's ability to alternate Coleman and Evans gives its passing attack options even without Pettaway.

Playable price: James Madison -18.5 or better at standard odds. Do not automatically lay -19.5 or -20.5; Pettaway's absence and Troy's capable defensive front make the larger numbers materially worse propositions. Confirm Crowder's role and the final offensive personnel before kickoff.

Troy vs James Madison Prediction

Troy's defense should prevent James Madison from matching its enormous home scoring average, and the absence of Pettaway reduces the likelihood of sustained rushing domination. Nevertheless, the Trojans' road scoring problems and the Dukes' quarterback options should allow James Madison to build a substantial advantage by the second half. Expect the home team to win more comfortably than last week's overtime defeat suggests.

Prediction: James Madison 37, Troy 13
