Green Wave Seeking to Roll Back in Win Column
Tulane took their first loss of the season as they were rolled by #13 Ole Miss on the road last Saturday and hope to rebound here. The Green Wave dropped to 3-1 on the year and opens up conference play here. Against Ole Miss, Tulane was down 10-0 after the opening quarter and never got closer than that the rest of the way. Tulane was down 23-3 after three quarters before giving up three touchdowns in the opening seven minutes of the fourth quarter to turn things into a rout. The Green Wave was outgained 548-282 in total offense, gave up 23 first downs while picking up 18 and struggled extending drives, going six of 15 on third down and zero of three on fourth down in the game. Both teams turned the ball over once while Tulane owned a 32:29 to 27:31 margin in time of possession.
This season, the Green Wave is 114th in the nation in passing offense with 172.8 yards per game through the air and 29th in rushing offense with 211 yards per contest on the ground. Tulane is 90th in the FBS in scoring offense with an average of 25 points per game, while they are 91st in scoring defense by allowing 26.5 points per contest. Jake Retzlaff is 51 of 95 passing for 578 yards with two touchdowns. He also leads the team with 339 yards and six scores on the ground. Brendan Sullivan (10 of 17, 113 yards, TD, INT, 13 rush yards) is the backup quarterback. Javin Gordon (35 carries, 157 yards), Zuberi Mobley (24 carries, 123 yards, two TD) and Arnold Barnes (26 carries, 114 yards) are part of a committee in the ground game. Omari Hayes leads the team with 14 receptions for 165 yards. Shazz Preston (eight catches, 148 yards) and Bryce Bohanon (11 grabs, 118 yards) are the only other players with more than 60 receiving yards on the season. Patrick Durkin is 10 of 11 on extra points and eight of eight on field goal attempts with a long of 50 this season.
Tulane is relatively healthy with no major names on the injury report.

Tulsa Trying to Build Momentum Off Last Week’s Win
Tulsa snapped a two-game slide as they went on the road and stifled Oklahoma State to pick up a win that ended the Mike Gundy era in Stillwater. The Golden Hurricane improved to 2-2 on the season and 0-1 in AAC play on the season. Against Oklahoma State, Tulsa gave up a field goal on the opening drive of the game before reeling off 19 unanswered points in the game. The Golden Hurricane held off the Cowboys’ fourth-quarter charge to earn the win. Tulsa held a 424-403 advantage in total offense, controlled the clock by a 34:45 to 25:15 margin and converted all three of their fourth downs in the game. That helped make up for giving up 24 first downs while picking up 21 and committing the game’s only turnover.
On the season, Tulsa is tied for 78th in the FBS in passing offense with 219.5 yards per game, while they are 51st in rushing offense by picking up 187.3 yards per contest. The Golden Hurricane is 98th in the nation in scoring offense at 22.8 points per game while they are 57th in scoring defense by allowing 20.5 points a contest. Baylor Hayes is 59 of 90 passing for 542 yards with three touchdowns and two interceptions while adding 50 yards and two scores on the ground. Kirk Francis (33 of 54, 318 yards, two TD, INT) and Stephen Kitterman (two of three, 18 yards) have seen work under center as well. Dominic Richardson leads the team with 84 carries for 442 yards and two scores on the year. Braylin Presley (17 carries, 131 yards) and Ajay Allen (20 carries, 114 yards, TD) are solid options on the ground. Zion Booker has reeled in 29 passes for 273 yards and a score on the year to lead the team. Micah Tease (eight catches, 134 yards), Brody Foley (eight receptions, 118 yards, two TD) and Presley (10 grabs, 76 yards, TD) are reliable targets in the passing game. Seth Morgan has hit all eight extra point attempts and seven of nine field goal attempts with a long of 47 this year.
Francis (concussion) was injured September 6 against New Mexico State and is questionable here.
Tulane vs. Tulsa Prediction
Spread Pick for Tulane vs. Tulsa
- Tulsa +15.5 (4 units)
Tulane was rolling, earning wins over power conference squads in Northwestern and Duke, before getting smoked by Ole Miss. The Green Wave has been solid running the ball and that should work against a Tulsa defense that gives up 177.8 yards per game on the ground. Part of that number is skewed a bit as Navy ran for 367 yards and five scores against Tulsa’s defense. Even should Tulane pounds the ball on the ground, that could make for extended, time-consuming drives. Tulsa did a good job stifling Oklahoma State last week and while Tulane is the better team here, giving two-plus scores is too much to ask. Take the points and the Golden Hurricane here.
Over/Under Pick for Tulane vs. Tulsa
- Under 52.5 (4 units)
Tulane hasn’t set the world on fire offensively as the passing attack hasn’t delivered as expected. The Green Wave split their four games in relation to the total. Tulane’s defense has sputtered a bit of late, giving up at least 27 points in each of their last three games. With that said, Tulsa isn’t an offensive powerhouse as they have three unders in their first four games. In Tulsa’s three unders this season, the Golden Hurricane has seen 42 combined points or less. The Golden Hurricane is decent defensively and this game is likely a slog where both teams grind out possessions. It shouldn’t take more than 24 or 27 points to win this one, so lean toward the under here.
