Tulane Battles for Respect
The Tulane Green Wave are 17-point underdogs coming into this matchup with Ole Miss, and are out to prove they belong in the College Football Playoff. ESPN.com recently released a ranking of the top 50 players in the CFP, and Tulane only had one entry in the list, as offensive guard Shadre Hurst was listed exactly 50th. Tulaneβs biggest wins of the season came over Duke as a 1.5-point favorite, and Memphis and North Texas where they were listed as small underdogs.
Tulaneβs head coach, Jon Sumrall, will be leaving for Florida at the end of the season, but will stay at the helm for the Green Waveβs playoff run. Tulane is led by their 6β1 junior quarterback Jake Retzlaff. He is a dual-threat quarterback who also leads the team in rushing, so far he has accumulated 2,862 passing yards and 610 rushing yards. His TD-INT ratio is 14-6, while he has rushed in for another 16 touchdowns with his legs. Javin Gordon is their freshman running back, he has 505 yards and another five touchdowns out of the backfield.
Shazz Preston is their top receiver, he is a 6β0 junior with 38 catches for 598 yards and four touchdowns. Bryce Bohanon has 417 receiving yards, but is likely to miss this game with an injury. - Questionable: WR Bryce Bohanon (417 yards)
Rebels are Under New Leadership
Lane Kiffinβs departure from the Ole Miss Rebelsβ program has been one of the top stories of the past month in college football, and now the Rebels will have to lean on their assistant coaches for leadership. Defensive coordinator Pete Golding is set to take over as the acting head coach for this playoff run, and offensive coordinator Charlie Weis Jr. will stay with the team for the playoff run before following Kiffin to LSU. Ole Miss had a strong season, with their only loss coming on the road against #9 Georgia, who is now the 3-seed in the CFP.
Ole Miss will not have their old head coach, but they will have their roster intact as no players are opting out for this title run. They are led by quarterback Trinidad Cambliss, he is a 6β1 senior who finished the regular season with 3,016 passing yards and a strong 18-3 TD-INT ratio. Chambliss is also a capable runner, as he has scrambled for 470 yards and six touchdowns. Their running game is strong, as Kewan Lacy is having a huge season with 1,279 yards and 20 rushing touchdowns. Lacy is second in the nation in rushing touchdowns, and recently ran for 224 yards in a win over Florida.
Harrison Wallace III has been their top receiver this season, as the 6'1 senior has 719 yards on 46 catches with three touchdowns. The Ole Miss defense has 25 sacks on the season, led by Princewill Umanmielen with 6.5 as an edge rusher. The team has seven interceptions, led by Wydett Williams Jr. with three from the safety position.

- Questionable: CB Antonio Kite, TE Tae'Quan Wright
Tulane vs. Ole Miss Picks and Predictions
Spread pick for Tulane vs. Ole Miss
- Ole Miss -17 (5 units)
It would be foolish to root for the underdog in this one. These teams met this season, with the same exact roster, and Ole Miss ran Tulane off the field 45-10. This is also a first round game in the College Football Playoff, which means that it will be played again on the campus of Ole Miss. The coaching changes are going to play an impact in the public betting market, but not for the sharps, as Ole Miss is still a heavy favorite for a reason. Tulane's best win of the season is arguably Duke or North Texas, neither of those teams are close to the caliber of the Rebels. Lacy is one of the best running backs in the nation with 20 touchdowns, and he will help Ole Miss run all over the Green Wave to an easy cover.
Take Ole Miss to win and cover.
Over/Under Pick for Tulane vs. Ole Miss
- Over 57
Expect fireworks in this Saturday afternoon College Football Playoff game, as each team has a mobile quarterback and will not play conservatively in this win or go home game. Retzlaff is the leading rusher for Tulane, he can move the chains with his arm of feet, and will not allow Tulane to put up a low scoring performance in this one. The Ole Miss defense is solid, but still gave up 14 or more in four of their last five games, they are not a juggernaut defensively. Ole Miss is going to win big here, and they will carry most of the burden in this over as they scored 45 last time they played Tulane. The Green Wave will give this game everything they have, it won't be enough for a win, but it will push the game over the total.
Take the over.
