Bobcats vs. Bulls prediction

Tonight’s UAlbany vs Buffalo picks feature a useful Week 1 contrast between live-game evidence and roster continuity. UAlbany already owns a 28-14 win over New Hampshire, while Buffalo is making its season debut with a heavily rebuilt roster and a new starting quarterback. The Bulls are still favored by more than two touchdowns at home, but the total of 48.5 is the cleaner market because UAlbany's opener showed a run-heavy style that can shorten the game.

UAlbany vs Buffalo Preview

UAlbany enters with actual 2026 evidence after beating New Hampshire 28-14. The Great Danes ran for 374 yards on 53 carries, with Joey Koch producing 144 rushing yards and quarterback Kai Colón adding another major rushing component. That profile matters because an underdog that can run the football is better equipped to shorten a game, protect its defense and keep a large favorite from accumulating possessions.

The passing game was much less productive. Colón completed only seven of 17 attempts for 57 yards and threw an interception. UAlbany does not want this matchup to become a high-volume passing contest. The ideal script is similar to the opener: control the line of scrimmage, stay out of obvious third downs and force Buffalo to defend quarterback movement and multiple rushing threats for four quarters.

Buffalo is more difficult to project because Pete Lembo is replacing a large portion of the roster. The Bulls have more than 50 new players and only a handful of returning starters, with receiver Jasaiah Gathings the lone returning offensive starter. Elijah Holmes, a transfer from the Division II level, has been named the starting quarterback. Buffalo also changed coordinators, so the Bulls enter Week 1 with substantial scheme and personnel turnover despite the stability of Lembo entering his third season.

That instability cuts in two directions. Buffalo has the FBS depth and home-field advantage to wear UAlbany down, but it may take time for a rebuilt offense to become efficient. The Bulls do have the specific preparation advantage of seeing UAlbany's current offense on film while the Great Danes have no 2026 Buffalo game tape. That is meaningful, especially for a defense preparing for UAlbany's run concepts.

The spread has moved from roughly Buffalo -17.5 in the Thursday morning snapshot toward -18.5. The total remains 48.5. That is a relatively low total for a favorite laying close to 20 points, and it creates a useful scoring equation. If UAlbany stays near 14 points, Buffalo needs to score into the mid-30s before the Over becomes likely. A rebuilt offense does not need to reach that level for Buffalo to win convincingly.

UAlbany's defensive performance against New Hampshire also deserves attention. The Great Danes held the Wildcats to only 62 rushing yards and generated four sacks. Buffalo's offensive line should present a much tougher challenge, but UAlbany has already shown it can create negative plays. If the Great Danes can force Holmes into third-and-long situations in his first FBS start, the game can become slower and less efficient than the spread alone suggests.

Matchup Breakdown

Buffalo owns the size and depth advantage, but quarterback certainty does not heavily favor the Bulls. Holmes is making a major step up in competition, while Colón has already started and won a game in this offense. Buffalo can reduce the burden on Holmes by running the football and playing through defense and field position, which is exactly the kind of approach that supports a lower total.

The Great Danes' rushing success is the most important matchup variable. Buffalo has a week of film to study the option looks and quarterback run game, but stopping it is different from identifying it. If UAlbany averages even four yards per carry, it can string together six-minute possessions that limit Buffalo's chances to create separation.

Turnovers are again the largest threat to the Under. UAlbany threw an interception in the opener, and an FBS defense will punish mistakes more aggressively. Buffalo does not need 400 yards of offense if it repeatedly starts on the plus side of the field. Colón's ball security and UAlbany's ability to avoid negative plays are therefore central to the handicap.

The fourth quarter also matters for the spread. UAlbany has already played a full game and should be comfortable executing its offense late. Buffalo may have more talent, but a rebuilt two-deep can lose sharpness during substitutions. That gives the underdog a path to a late scoring drive even if the Bulls control most of the night.

Game Thesis: Buffalo should win because of its FBS depth, home field and preparation advantage, but the Bulls are asking a new quarterback and almost entirely rebuilt offense to create a margin of nearly three touchdowns. UAlbany's run-heavy identity reduces possessions and gives the Great Danes a way to keep the game from becoming a track meet. That makes the low total the strongest angle, with the large underdog spread also carrying value.

UAlbany vs Buffalo Best Bet - Total: Under 48.5 (-110)

Under 48.5 is the preferred wager because both teams have incentives to lean on the run. UAlbany already showed that is its identity, and Buffalo can protect a first-time FBS starting quarterback by doing the same. Fewer possessions make it harder for the teams to reach 49 unless turnovers or special teams create easy points.

The total also fits the market structure. Buffalo is favored by more than 18, so a normal Bulls victory can look like 27-10 or 31-13 and remain below the number. UAlbany does not need to stop Buffalo completely. It only needs to prevent explosive scoring and force enough full-field drives to keep the clock moving.

The Under fails if UAlbany's offense gives Buffalo short fields or if Holmes immediately creates explosive plays against an FCS secondary. Those are real risks, but the expected script is more methodical than the posted total requires.

UAlbany vs Buffalo Spread Pick: UAlbany +18.5 (-105)

UAlbany +18.5 is the secondary selection. The Great Danes have already played a meaningful game, they have a proven rushing identity and they are catching an extra point compared with the earlier +17.5 range. Buffalo should have the better roster, but roster turnover makes it difficult to justify assuming seamless execution in Week 1.

The spread works best if UAlbany can avoid falling behind by multiple scores in the first quarter. Once the Great Danes can keep running their normal offense into the second half, the clock and the large cushion become allies. Buffalo can win by two touchdowns and still fall short of covering.

Prediction: Buffalo 27, UAlbany 14
