Huskies Try to Get Back in Win Column

UConn pushed Syracuse to overtime on the road but ended up falling short last Saturday. The Huskies dropped to 1-1 on the year and look to get back in the win column on the road here. Against Syracuse, UConn led 14-6 at the half and 17-6 after three quarters, only to trail 20-17 with 48 seconds remaining. The Huskies knotted the game with one second remaining before losing in overtime. UConn was outgained 461-416 in total offense and gave up 24 first downs while picking up 20 in the game. The Huskies did force two turnovers while not committing any and won time of possession by a 33:34 to 26:26 margin.

The Huskies enter this week tied for 14th in the FBS in passing offense with 331 yards per game through the air, while they are tied for 44th in rushing offense with 196 yards per game on the ground. Chris Freeman is 10 of 10 on extra point attempts and three of four on field goal attempts with a long of 41 this year.

Delaware Seeking to Prevail at Home

Delaware couldn’t build off a victory in their first game as an FBS program as they were clobbered by Colorado on the road last week. The Blue Hens fell to 1-1 on the season and look to get back on track as they take the field at home here. Against Colorado, Delaware never led as they were down 7-0 after the opening quarter and 10-0 in the second quarter. The Blue Hens got within 10-7 with 45 seconds to play in the first half, only to give up a backbreaking touchdown with nine seconds to play before the half and never regrouped. Delaware was edged 398-396 in total offense, gave up 21 first downs while picking up 19, lost the time of possession by a 32:57 to 27:03 margin and committed the game’s only two turnovers.

The Blue Hens enter this week 23rd in the FBS in passing offense with 292 yards per game through the air, while they are 111th in rushing offense with 110.5 yards per game on the ground. Delaware is 104th in the FBS in scoring offense with 21 points per game, while they are 87th in scoring defense by allowing 24 points per contest. Nick Minicucci is 46 of 72 passing for 563 yards with four touchdowns and one interception while ranking second on the team with 49 yards and a score on the ground. Zach Marker is three of eight for 21 yards while adding 12 yards on the ground. Jo Silver leads the team on the ground with 17 carries for 81 yards. Viron Ellison Jr. (11 carries, 38 yards) and Saeed St. Fleur (three carries, 27 yards) are next in line for the run game. Jake Thaw leads the team with 11 receptions for 177 yards and a score. Ja’Carree Kelly (four receptions, 105 yards, TD), Kyre Duplessis (eight grabs, 102 yards, TD) and Sean Wilson (five receptions, 58 yards) are other valuable receiving options. Nate Reed is six of six on extra point attempts and zero of two on field goal attempts this season.

Spread Pick for UConn vs. Delaware

  • UConn -9.5 (4 units)

As good as Delaware was at the FCS level, it’s still a jump in competition, even against middle-of-the-road FBS schools like UConn. The Blue Hens were reminded of that after they were punched in the mouth by Colorado in Boulder last week. UConn gave Syracuse all it wanted in the Carrier Dome last week before falling in overtime and should gain confidence after that showing. The Huskies are going to be motivated after that loss and they won’t be caught off guard by the Blue Hens. UConn’s offensive attack gets the job done and that helps carry them to a road victory in this contest.

Over/Under Pick for UConn vs. Delaware

  • Under 53.5 (4 units)

UConn split their first two games in relation to the total this season. The Huskies combined with Central Connecticut State for 72 points (against a number of 51.5 points in the opener. Last week, UConn combined with Syracuse for 47 points against a total of 57 points to fall short of the mark. Delaware has hung a pair of unders in their first two games as an FBS program. The Blue Hens saw a combined 52 points in their win over Delaware State to fall short of the number of 55.5 points in their opener. Last week, we saw a combined 38 points in Delaware’s loss to Colorado, falling well short of the 50-point number set for that contest. UConn is pretty solid defensively and that should keep the Blue Hens in check, keeping this game under the total.
