UMass Still Searching For First Win

It’s been a long season for UMass, and the struggles have been consistent on both sides of the ball. The Minutemen enter this matchup still searching for their first win, and last week’s 38-13 loss to Central Michigan was another reminder of how difficult it’s been to sustain drives. Quarterback AJ Hairston has shown flashes, but his accuracy has been a major issue, completing under 50 percent of his passes with more interceptions than touchdowns. The offensive line hasn’t done him many favors either, as the running game has been bottled up far too often, leaving UMass one-dimensional and predictable.

The bright spot has been running back Brandon Hood, who continues to fight for tough yards despite limited space. He’s averaging over four yards per carry, and when paired with Rocko Griffin, the Minutemen at least have a backfield capable of moving the chains if given room. Wideout Jacquon Gibson has been the most reliable target, leading the team in receptions and yards, but the lack of explosive plays has kept this offense stuck in neutral. Scoring just 11.5 points per game, UMass has simply not been able to keep pace with opponents once they fall behind.

Defensively, the Minutemen have been on the field far too long, and it shows in the numbers. They’re giving up nearly 36 points per game and over 430 yards of total offense, with opponents finding success both through the air and on the ground. Linebacker Timmy Hinspeter has been a tackling machine, and defensive lineman Marques White has shown some ability to disrupt plays in the backfield, but the unit as a whole has struggled to get off the field on third down. Against an Akron team that has shown more balance in recent weeks, UMass will need its defense to play above its usual level just to keep things competitive.

Akron Surprises Buffalo On The Road

Akron comes into this one with a bit more confidence, sitting at 3-6 overall and fresh off a 24-16 win over Buffalo. Quarterback Ben Finley has been steady if unspectacular, throwing for over 1,600 yards with 13 touchdowns, and he’s shown the ability to spread the ball around to multiple receivers. Kyan Mason and Israel Polk have been his top targets, combining for nearly 750 yards and nine scores, giving the Zips a reliable passing attack when they need to move the chains. Finley has had turnover issues at times, but when he’s in rhythm, Akron’s offense looks far more competent than what UMass has been able to put together.

The ground game has also given Akron some balance, with Jordan Gant leading the way at nearly 700 rushing yards on the season. He’s not a home-run hitter, but he’s been consistent in picking up positive yardage and keeping the offense on schedule. That balance has been key for the Zips, who average close to 20 points per game—still modest by national standards, but enough to win games when paired with a defense that has shown signs of improvement. Against a UMass defense that has been leaky all year, Akron should be able to find success both on the ground and through the air.

Defensively, the Zips have been far from dominant, but they’ve tightened up in recent weeks. Linebacker Shammond Cooper has been a leader in the middle, while defensive lineman Bruno Dall has provided pressure up front with a team-high four sacks. The secondary has been opportunistic, with Elijah Reed picking off a pair of passes, and the unit as a whole has done a better job limiting big plays. They’re still giving up close to 29 points per game, but compared to UMass, they’ve been far more capable of getting stops when needed. At home, under the lights, and with a chance to inch closer to bowl eligibility, Akron has every reason to come out sharp in this one.

UMass vs Akron Pick

UMass vs Akron Spread Pick

  • Akron -11 (5 Units)

Laying the -11 with Akron feels justified given the gap in consistency between these two programs. The Zips have shown they can move the ball with balance, leaning on Ben Finley’s steady passing and Jordan Gant’s reliable ground game to keep defenses honest. Their receiving corps, led by Kyan Mason and Israel Polk, has been productive enough to stretch the field, and that balance should give Akron plenty of opportunities against a UMass defense that has been giving up over 430 yards per game. At home, with a chance to build on their recent win over Buffalo, the Zips are in a strong position to dictate tempo and control the scoreboard.

UMass, on the other hand, has struggled to stay competitive once they fall behind. The Minutemen are averaging just 11.5 points per game, and their offensive line issues have made it difficult to sustain drives or protect AJ Hairston long enough to generate big plays. Even with Brandon Hood providing some spark in the backfield, the lack of efficiency through the air has left them one-dimensional. Against an Akron defense that has tightened up in recent weeks and shown the ability to pressure quarterbacks, UMass is likely to face long stretches without scoring. That combination makes Akron covering the double-digit spread a realistic expectation.

UMass vs Akron Over/Under Pick

  • Under 50 (4 Units)

The under 50 looks appealing because neither offense has shown the firepower to consistently push games into high-scoring territory. Akron averages just under 20 points per game despite improved balance, while UMass has been stuck at barely 12 points per contest with one of the least efficient passing attacks in the country. Both defenses have their flaws, but the pace of play and lack of explosive plays on either side suggest more grinding drives than quick strikes. With Akron likely controlling the game on the ground and UMass struggling to finish possessions, this matchup sets up well for a total that stays below the number.
