UNLV aims for its third straight victory
The UNLV Rebels (9-2; 6-5 ATS; 5-6 O/U) have won three straight contests and are still alive in the race for the Mountain West Conference championship game. During that stretch, the Rebels have beaten Colorado State 42-10, Utah State 29-26 in double overtime, and Hawaii 38-10.
Last Saturday, the Rebels put on their best defensive performance of the season. They outgained Hawaii 470-231 in total yards while holding the Rainbow Warriors scoreless in the second half. Junior QB Anthony Colandrea threw for 253 yards and three touchdowns, and the Rebels rushed 41 times for 217 yards and a couple of scores.
The Rebels allowed just 68 rushing yards to the Rainbow Warriors. Hawaii mustered only 12 1st downs while going 3-for-10 on 3rd down and 0-for-2 on 4th down.
UNLV has struggled to defend for most of the season. The Rebels allow 29.1 points per game (99th in the country) on 173.9 rushing yards (103rd) and 254.9 passing yards (120th). They score 36.7 points in return (16th) on 202.7 rushing yards (21st) and 257.5 passing yards (38th).
Colandrea has thrown for 2,780 yards, 21 touchdowns, and six interceptions this season. He’s rushed 104 times for 528 yards and seven touchdowns, while junior RB Jai’Den Thomas has amassed 1,028 yards from scrimmage and nine touchdowns. Senior WR Jaden Bradley leads the receiving corps with 48 catches for 763 yards and four touchdowns.
Nevada eyes its third straight win
Two weeks ago, the Nevada Wolf Pack (3-8; 5-5-1 ATS; 4-7 O/U) put an end to their seven-game losing streak with a 55-10 thrashing of San Jose State in front of the home fans. Last Saturday, the Wolf Pack beat Wyoming 13-7 as 6.5-point road underdogs.
Against San Jose State, Nevada won the turnover battle 5-0. Freshman QB Carter Jones tossed for 195 yards and two touchdowns, while senior RB Caleb Ramseur carried the pigskin 20 times for 128 yards and a touchdown. Ramseur also had two catches for 29 yards and a touchdown.
Last week, the Wolf Pack lost the turnover battle 1-0, but they outgained Wyoming 271-220 in total yards and took full advantage of the Cowboys’ slumping offense. Jones completed 11 of his 17 passing attempts, throwing for 58 yards and a touchdown, while Ramseur posted 19 totes for 88 yards.
Nevada scores just 17.6 points per game (128th in the country) on 149.9 rushing yards (77th) and 148.7 passing yards (127th). The Wolf Pack allow 26.2 points in return (80th) on 142.6 rushing yards (58th) and 215.7 passing yards (63rd).
Jones has thrown for 914 yards, six touchdowns, and eight interceptions across eight appearances this season. Ramseur has recorded 771 yards from scrimmage and six touchdowns, while senior tight end Jett Carpenter has amassed 30 receptions, 318 yards, and two touchdowns.
UNLV vs. Nevada Pick
Spread Pick for UNLV vs. Nevada
- UNLV -7.5 (5 units)
I expect the Rebels to beat the Wolf Pack comfortably. UNLV is arguably a much better offensive team than Nevada. The Rebels have a better quarterback and a much deeper offensive unit than the Wolf Pack. Moreover, UNLV’s defense just put on a stellar performance against Hawaii in Week 13.
It’s a big rivalry game, and the Rebels have an additional motive. They can clinch the spot in the MWC championship game with a win over Nevada, but the Rebels also need both New Mexico and Boise State to lose in Week 14. That’s not impossible, as Boise State visits Utah State without its starting QB, and New Mexico hosts the MWC-leading San Diego State.
Over/Under Pick for UNLV vs. Nevada
- Under 53.5 (5 units)
The Wolf Pack heavily lean on their ground game. They need to continue to pound the rock and control the clock in order to keep it close against the Rebels.
UNLV’s offense is dynamic and pretty balanced, but the Rebels have to build on their Week 13 defensive performance. That’s a key for success, especially against the team that doesn’t have a lot of offensive weapons, like Nevada.
The under has hit in 10 of Nevada’s last 14 games overall. I would ride this betting trend.
