Utah State Try to Spring Road Upset
Utah State opened their season with a win at home against UTEP and now faces another program from the Lone Star State here. The problem for the Aggies is that they are facing a ranked program from the SEC in one of the most hostile environments in college football. Against UTEP, Utah State took the lead for good on a touchdown in the final minute of the opening quarter to take a 10-7 advantage. They were up 20-10 at the half and didn’t let the Miners closer than that in the second half. Utah State owned a 362-284 advantage in total offense, forced the game’s lone turnover and held a 30:37 to 29:23 edge in time of possession in the game. Those numbers offset that they were edged 19-18 in first downs.
Bryson Barnes completed 19 of 28 passes for 233 yards and a score while adding 15 carries for 29 yards plus a score in the game. Miles Davis led the run game with 12 carries for 88 yards and a score while Javen Jacobs (four carries, 12 yards) saw limited work in the contest. Davis led the team with six receptions for 61 yards in the game. Braden Pegan (five catches, 38 yards), Anthony Garcia (three catches, 51 yards) and Brady Boyd (three grabs, 31 yards) each had multiple receptions while Broc Lane’s lone catch was a 52-yard score. Tanner Rinker hit both extra point attempts and two of two field goal attempts with a long of 49 in the contest.
Aggies Look to Roll to Home Victory
Texas A&M piled up points in their season opener against UTSA as they rolled to a win, though they failed to cover the line in the process. The Aggies now look to carry that momentum over to this contest at Kyle Field. Against UTSA, Texas A&M opened the scoring midway through the opening quarter and never let the Roadrunners even the rest of the way. The Aggies were up 21-10 at the half and didn’t let UTSA closer than four in the second half. Texas A&M held a 401-373 edge in total offense in the game. Each team finished with 17 first downs while neither side turned the ball over in the contest. That helped make up for a 33:41 to 26:19 beating in time of possession in the game.
Marcel Reed completed 22 of 34 passes for 289 yards and a career-high four touchdown passes while leading the way on the ground with eight carries for 39 yards. Miles O’Neill was one of two for two yards while running the ball once for no yards. Rueben Owens II was the lead back in the run game with five carries for 37 yards. Le’Veon Moss (three carries, 19 yards), Amari Daniels (three carries, seven yards) and EJ Smith (two carries, six yards, TD) all saw limited work. Mario Craver led the team in the passing game as he hauled in eight receptions for 122 yards and two scores. KC Concepcion (three grabs, 72 yards, TD) and Theo Melin Ohrstrom (three grabs, 23 yards, TD) also caught touchdown passes in the win. Jared Zirkel hit all six extra point attempts while not attempting a field goal in the game.
Utah State vs. Texas A&M Pick
Spread Pick for Utah State vs. Texas A&M
- Texas A&M Aggies -30.5 (4 units)
While both teams prevailed in their openers, each team was at home and that’s not the way things go here. Utah State had their moments in its win over UTEP but going on the road in College Station, with 100,000 fans screaming, is a daunting task for any team. That’s doubly so for a mid-major program like Utah State, which was just 4-8 a season ago. Bronco Mendenhall won his debut with the program, but it’s hard to see the Aggies stopping Reed, who was terrific in the opener. Kyle Field is too big a scene for Utah State, which gets trounced in this contest as Texas A&M goes to 2-0.
Over/Under Pick for Utah State vs. Texas A&M
- Over 53.5 (4 units)
Utah State wound up falling under the total in the season opener. The Aggies totaled 44 points in the game, falling well below the number of 58.5 points set by the books. With that in mind, Utah State went over the total in nine of their 12 games a season ago, including four of their six road games. Texas A&M opened their season with an over as it combined for 66 points in their win over UTSA. That pushed the game past the number of 58.5 points set for the contest. Texas A&M went over the number in eight of their 13 games and they should pile up points here against a Utah State defense that finished 129th in scoring defense by allowing 37.8 points per game. This one winds up over the total.
