Utes still have a path to the Big 12 Championship
Utah (7-2 SU, 7-2 ATS, and 6-3 O/U) beat Cincinnati 45-14 in its previous game, improving to 4-2 in Big 12 play this season. The Utes were on a bye last week.
Utah dominated Colorado and Cincy in its last two games, bouncing back from its narrow loss to BYU. It's only losses this season came against ranked conference opponents, with the other defeat coming at the hands of Texas Tech. In the dominant win over the 17th-ranked Bearcats, the Utes jumped out to a 24-7 halftime lead and never relented. They gained nearly 500 total yards, rushing for 267 and passing for 213. Utah dominated the time of possession, holding the football for over 20 more minutes than Cincinnati.
“I think the biggest thing for us is there’s still a way for us to get to the championship,” junior QB Devon Dampier said. “That’s been on our mind. That’s been our goal since the beginning.”
Dampier leads the Utes' passing attack with 1,588 yards and 15 touchdowns to five interceptions. He has completed 66.4 percent of his passes, averaging 6.8 yards per attempt. The Phoenix, AZ native is also a threat on the ground, rushing for 520 yards and five scores. Dampier's top receiving target is senior WR Ryan Davis (56 receptions for 650 yards and four TDs), while sophomore RB Wayshawn Parker (87 carries for 607 yards and five TDs) paces Utah's run game.
The Utes score 39.6 points per game (8th) and average 447.2 total yards (12th), including 210.1 passing yards (92nd) and 267.1 rushing yards (3rd). The Utah defense allows 14.2 points (8th) and 301.1 total yards (14th) per game, including 156.8 passing yards (6th) and 144.3 rushing yards (67th).
Utah Utes Football Injury Report: No significant injuries to report for Saturday's NCAAF game against Baylor.
Will Baylor use its last win as a springboard?
Baylor (5-4 SU, 2-7 ATS, and 5-4 O/U) beat UCF 30-3 in its previous game, improving to 3-3 in conference competition this year. The Bears were on a bye last week.
Baylor outgained UCF 417-225, limiting the visitors to 74 rushing yards (3.2 YPC) and 151 passing yards (4.6 YPA). The Knights were a combined 1-for-14 on third and fourth down and committed two turnovers. The Bears led 20-3 at the half, scoring on four of its first five drives, and cruised to victory by consistently moving the chains (combined 10-for-20 on third and fourth down).
“A win like that was something that we needed,” Baylor coach Dave Aranda said. “We’ve been really pushing hard to get it. That’s the team that we’ve seen and we’ve known, and so to be able to have other people see it is really fulfilling.”
Senior QB Sawyer Robertson leads an elite Bears aerial attack with 2,780 passing yards and 26 touchdowns to seven interceptions. He has completed 62.8 percent of his passes, averaging 6.7 yards per attempt. Robertson distributes the football evenly, as four pass-catchers have at least 400 yards. Baylor's top pass-catcher is senior TE Michael Trigg (40 receptions for 607 yards and six TDs), and sophomore RB Bryson Washington (129 carries for 624 yards and six TDs) paces the ground game.
The Bears score 33.8 points per game (27th) and average 454.0 total yards (20th), including 312.7 passing yards (5th) and 141.3 rushing yards (85th). The Baylor defense surrenders 29.3 points (99th) and 383.3 total yards (83rd) per game, including 205.8 passing yards (51st) and 177.6 rushing yards (112th).
Baylor Bears Football Injury Report: No significant injuries to report for Saturday's college football game against Utah.
Utah vs. Baylor Pick and Preview
Spread Pick for Utah vs. Baylor
- Utes -7.5 (5 Units)
The Bears have covered just twice in their previous nine games. They haven't been this big of an underdog this season, but I feel the 7.5-point spread is justified. The Utes' rushing attack is elite, and the home team ranks 113th in rushing defense. Baylor is also 86th in third-down defense, 87th in opponent touchdown conversion percentage in the red zone, and 127th in havoc created. I expect the Utes to wear them down on that side of the ball.
Utah will also get pressure on Robertson (15th in sacks), forcing him into a couple of costly turnovers. The Utes rank in the top 25 in havoc created (25th) and havoc allowed (18th) this season. Baylor has a -8 turnover margin (124th) with 17 turnovers (121st).
The Utes have covered the spread in four of their last five games, and all four of those covers came as favorites of nine or more points. Bet on their side in Saturday night's game in Waco.
Over/Under Pick for Utah vs. Baylor
- Under 60 (5 Units)
Utah will win and cover the spread, but these teams won't combine for more than 60 points.
Baylor can't keep up with Utah's offense, especially if the visitors keep the football on the ground to reduce the Bears' possessions. The home team has struggled to hold onto the ball and hasn't created enough takeaways on defense to make up for their costly mistakes. That has resulted in an average time of possession ranked 95th in the country. The Utes will drain the game clock, consistently converting third downs and wearing down the Bears with big runs (3rd in run plays of 10-plus yards). These teams will trade scores for a quarter or two, but Baylor will crumble after halftime.
