Utah Needs Help

The Utah Utes avoided a disastrous loss on Saturday, scoring 16 straight points in the fourth quarter to down Kansas State at home, 51-47. The win kept the Utes' faint hopes alive of earning a trip to the Big 12 title game and possibly earning a College Football Playoff Berth.

“I guess games like that come along every once in a great, great while, but so proud of our guys for hanging in there. Got battered in the run game. If you'd said we were going to give up nearly 500 yards rushing and win the game, I'd say you're crazy. That doesn't happen, so just a great illustration of what determination and guts and never-say-die attitude can get you.” Head coach Kyle Whittingham said after the win.

Quarterback Devon Dampier came up big when it mattered most. He led the Utes to two touchdown drives to help pull out the victory. He finished 18-of-33 for a season-high 259 yards and two touchdowns. He also rushed 14 times for 94 yards and two scores. Running back Wayshawn Parker had a strong night with 100 yards rushing on 19 carries. Backup quarterback Byrd Ficklin contributed with 54 yards on seven carries with a career-high three touchdowns. He now has 10 touchdowns on the year. In all, the Utes had 551 yards of total offense.

Utah’s defense allowed 574 yards of total offense, including 472 yards on the ground. The Utes tightened up in the fourth quarter, allowing just 78 yards of total offense. Levani Damuni led the team with 11 tackles, a season-best for him. Jonathan Hall had nine tackles, one less than his career-high. John Henry Daley led Utah with 3.5 tackles for loss, including two more sacks. He now has 11.5 on the season.

Utah comes into this game ranked sixth in the country in points per game. The Utes are first in rushing and 93rd in passing. They are 13th in red zone attempts per game and 22nd in red zone scores. The Utes are 16th in the country in sacks allowed. Defensively, the Utes are ranked 18th in the country in scoring defense. They are just 112th in the nation against the run, but are 17th against the pass. They are 9th in red zone attempts allowed and 95th in red zone scores. They are 20th in the nation in sacks per game. The Utes are 38th in penalty yards per game and 51st in turnover margin.

Key Injuries: DE John Henry Daley, TE Hunter Andrews, and S Rabbit Evans are out. OL Spencer Fano is probable.

Kansas Fighting for Bowl Spot

The Kansas Jayhawks lost their second straight on Saturday, a 38-14 loss to Iowa State on the road. Kansas fell behind 17-0 at the half, and the game was all but over. The Jayhawks scored 14 points in the third quarter, but that would be all.

"Not very well, obviously. Got off to a slow start. I thought we played soft and timid. When we did have moments to flip it, we didn't make enough plays to answer that to try to make it a better football game." Head coach Lance Leipold said.

Kansas quarterback Jalon Daniels finished 13-of-23 for 154 yards and an interception. Backup Cole Ballard came in and went 3-of-6 for 37 yards and a touchdown. Daniel Hishaw Jr. led the Jayhawks with 50 yards rushing on eight carries, while fellow back Leshon Williams had 42 yards on just four carries. Boden Groen had the team’s lone touchdown catch. Kansas finished with 323 yards of total offense, including 132 yards on the ground.

The Buckeyes’ defense did its part against the Bruins’ offensive attack. They held UCLA to just 228 yards of total offense, including just 68 yards rushing. Linebacker Sonny Styles led the way with seven tackles for the Buckeyes. His brother, Lorenzo Styles Jr., finished with five tackles and also added a 100-yard kickoff return for a touchdown. It marked the first kickoff return for a touchdown for Ohio State since 2010.

The Jayhawks’ defense allowed 462 yards of total offense, including 221 yards on the ground. Trey Lathan led the way with a career-high 13 tackles, his second career double-digit tackle game. Defensive tackle Blake Herold had a career-high seven tackles. Defensive end Dak Brinkley had two tackles for loss in the game. Justice Finkley added a sack.

It is win or go home for the Jayhawks on Friday afternoon. The Jayhawks are ranked 61st in the country in points per game. They are 60th in rushing and 83rd in passing. Kansas is 71st in the country in red zone attempts per game, and the Jayhawks are 107th in red zone offense. The Jayhawks are 71st in the country in sacks allowed this season. Defensively, the Jayhawks are 85th in points allowed per game. They are just 110th against the run and 64th against the pass. The Jayhawks are just 112th in the nation in red zone defense. They are 16th in penalty yards per game and 51st in sacks per game. Kansas is 51st in turnover margin.

Key Injuries: QB Jalon Daniels and RB Daniel Hishaw Jr. are probable.

Point Spread pick for Utah at Kansas

  • Utah -11.5 (4 units)

Utah will be able to run wild on Friday afternoon with the nation’s top-ranked rushing offense challenging Kansas’ 110th-ranked rush defense. That should allow the Utes to control the tempo and the ball. The Utes are sixth in the country in points per game and match that with the country’s 16th-ranked scoring defense. The Utes are still fighting for a playoff spot and will likely step on the neck of the Jayhawks to help their case in earning a playoff bid, should they not earn a spot in the Big 12 Championship game. Kansas’ defense will not hold up to the ground-and-pound style of Utah on Friday. That will turn this game into a one-sided affair by the second half.

Take the Utes -11.5

Over/Under Pick for Utah at Kansas

  • Over 59.5 (4 units)

The Utes’ offense is humming at the moment. The team has scored 45 or more points in four straight games. That includes three games of over 50 points. The Jayhawks can do some damage on the ground against the Utes’ 112th-ranked rush defense. Kansas has scored at least 14 points in each of its last five games. That number will be enough to get this game past the total, given the dominance of Utah’s offense.

Take the under.
