UTEP coming off a bye

UTEP snapped a four-game losing streak on Wednesday, Oct. 15, with a 35-17 win over Sam Houston State to improve to 1-2 in Conference USA. The Miners scored two touchdowns in the fourth quarter to propel the Miners to a blowout win. QB Skyler Locklear completed 21 of 26 passes for 236 yards with two TDs and a pick, while rushing for two scores to lead the Miners.

The Miners’ strength lies on defense, ranking 58th in total yards allowed, 45th against the pass, and 91st against the run. Offensively, they’ve struggled, ranking 115th in total yards, 76th in passing, and 123rd in rushing. In his first season as a starter after stops at USC and Boise State,Β  Quarterback Malachi Nelson has completed 54.7% of his passes for 1,163 yards with eight touchdowns and nine interceptions. However, Locklear has taken over as a starter as the former Austin Peay QB is completing 67.3% of his passes for 400 yards with three TDs and four INTs, while rushing for 149 yards and three scores.

Turnovers have been a major problem, as UTEP ranks among the bottom 10 nationally in turnover margin.

Unbeaten in conference play

Kennesaw State opened the year with road losses to Wake Forest (10-9) and Indiana (56-9), but since then has ripped off five straight wins. The streak includes a 45-26 win at FIU on Oct. 21 and four-straight covers against the spread. Amari Odom threw for 205 yards with a TD, while rushing for 36 yards and a score. The Owls produced 214 rushing yards and 284 passing yards, while allowing 503 total yards.

The Owls have shown solid balance offensively, ranking 69th nationally in total yards per game, 72nd in passing, and 66th in rushing. Defensively, they sit 101st in total yards allowed, 103rd against the pass, and 93rd against the run.

As the old saying goes, if you have two quarterbacks, you don’t have one...or something like that. But that hasn’t been true for the Owls, who have seen success with their dup. Amari Odom has been the more effective overall option, completing 70.8% of his passes for 959 yards with five touchdowns and one interception. Odom is also third on the team with 198 rushing yards and leads the team with three rushing touchdowns. However, he's listed as questionable for this game with an undisclosed injury. Senior Dexter Williams II has also been solid in substantial playing time, completing 56.7% of his passes for 605 yards with five touchdowns and one interception, while also adding two scores on the ground.

UTEP Miners at Kennesaw State Predictions

Spread Pick for UTEP vs. Kennesaw State:

  • Kennesaw State -9.5 ( 4 units)

UTEP enters with a six-day rest advantage, but that’s where its advantage ends. The Miners’ only FBS win came against a Sam Houston State team that ranks 127th in yards allowed per pass attempt. Now they face a Kennesaw State defense that ranks 60th against the pass and 21st in yards allowed per pass attempt at home.

With Nelson ranking 136th nationally in quarterback rating, UTEP is unlikely to move the ball consistently against a confident Kennesaw State squad that seems to be getting better each week. Take the Owls to cover.

Total Pick:

  • Under 50.5 ( 4 units)

By Conference USA standards, Kennesaw State has been solid defensively. The Indiana game skewed their numbers, but this is the same team that held Wake Forest to only 10 points in a loss to open the season. They've gone under in four of their last five games.

UTEP has been held below 17 points in four of six FBS matchups this season, and that trend should continue. This is a long trip for UTEP, and I expect Kennesaw State to control the tempo and keep this one under the total.

I will predict that Kennesaw State wins this game 28-17.
