How much can Vanderbilt improve in 2025?
Vanderbilt (1-0 SU, 1-0 ATS, and 0-1 O/U) finished with a 7-6 record last year, as the Commodores started 5-2 but couldn't sustain their momentum. Their 2024 season was best known for their upset of top-ranked Alabama, their first victory over the Crimson Tide in 40 years. This year's team is expected to be better, and possibly their best in the past decade. It will take a few upsets to secure an eight or nine-win season, but the 'Dores are capable of navigating the SEC's rough waters.
Vandy handled its business in Week 1, jumping out to a 28-0 halftime lead and cruising to a 45-3 win over the Buccaneers. Senior QB Diego Pavia passed for 275 yards and three touchdowns in only three quarters of action, tying personal bests. The Commodores outgained the visitors 481-135 in total yards and forced two turnovers on defense.
Vanderbilt is the most experienced team in the SEC in terms of returning production (77%). That should give the 'Dores a fighting chance at another winning season in their fifth year under head coach Clark Lea. Pavia (3,093 total yards and 28 total TDs) and his magnetic personality are back to lead the offense, along with TE Eli Stowers (648 receiving yards and five TDs), WR Junior Sherrill (411 receiving yards), and RB Sedrick Alexander (586 rushing yards and six TDs). The offensive line is a question mark, as four starters are gone, but seven transfers were brought in.
The Commodores' defense has the potential to improve in 2025, as 12 of the 16 players with 200-plus snaps are back. Vanderbilt also added a few impact transfers in DB C.J. Heard (Florida Atlantic), DT Mason Nelson (Western Michigan), and EDGE Keanu Koht (Alabama). The linebacking unit appears stout, with three top tacklers back, and the line is also veteran-led. For the most part, the unit will only be asked to bend, but not break, but that's easier said than done in the SEC.
Vanderbilt Commodores Football Injury Report: WR Junior Sherrill (undisclosed), TE Cole Spence (knee), and QB Jeremy St-Hilaire (nose) are questionable to play on Saturday against Virginia Tech.
Virginia Tech needs more from its offense this week
Virginia Tech (0-1 SU, 0-1 ATS, and 0-1 O/U) went 6-7 last year, losing to Minnesota in the Duke's Mayo Bowl. The Hokies started 5-3, with their losses to Vanderbilt, Rutgers, and Miami (FL), but dropped four of their final five games. They struggled to convert third downs and lost the time of possession battle too often, preventing the offense from playing up to its potential. Part of the problem was the offensive line, as VT opened up holes for the run game, but ranked 107th in sacks allowed and 121st in tackles for loss allowed. That pressure made life difficult for QB Kyron Drones, who was banged up and rarely had the time he needed to make winning decisions.
The Hokies were competitive but faltered late against the Gamecocks last week, losing 24-11 in the Aflac Kickoff game. Virginia Tech trailed 10-8 early in the fourth quarter, but an 80-yard punt return for a touchdown ignited South Carolina. The VT defense kept them in the game, but Drones was picked off twice, and the Hokies' run game only produced 3.1 yards per rush.
Virginia Tech didn't look like an improved offensive team last week, but they won't face many defenses as talented as South Carolina's unit. The dual-threat Drones passed for 27 touchdowns with close to 1,200 rushing yards over the last two seasons, and he has a great cast of pass-catchers to work with, namely junior WR Ayden Greene and transfers Cameron Seldon (Tennessee) and Donavon Green (Wake Forest). The Hokies' run game will be spearheaded by a trio of solid backs, but the o-line is still a cause for concern.
When Virginia Tech allowed 24 or fewer points last season, the team was 6-0. Sam Siefkes is in as the team's defensive coordinator after spending the past few seasons coaching linebackers in the NFL. He inherits a VT D that's stout at linebacker with Jaden Keller (83 tackles) and Caleb Woodson (72 tackles with 7.5 TFL). The Hokies did a great job at generating pressure (18th nationally in sacks) and creating takeaways (13th in turnovers), but the defensive line and secondary lost some key players. The staff brought in several quality transfers to address the departures, but time will tell if they are the right pieces for the puzzle.
Virginia Tech Hokies Football Injury Report: WR Keylen Adams (undisclosed), RB Braydon Bennett (knee), RB Jeffrey Overton Jr. (undisclosed), RB Terion Stewart (undisclosed), and WR Chanz Wiggins (undisclosed) are questionable to play on Saturday against Vanderbilt.
Vanderbilt vs. Virginia Tech Picks
Spread Pick for Vandy vs. Virginia Tech
- Vanderbilt ML (5 Units)
I have significant concerns about Virginia Tech following last week. The Hokies' offense was especially troublesome, as their lack of a run game resulted in inconsistent play. Once again, Drones was under too much pressure, resulting in a 42.9% completion rate and two picks. The Virginia Tech offensive line was weak from start to finish (47.16 pass protection grade, per PFF), as well. On the other side of the ball, the defense tackled well in space, but didn't create any turnovers or significant impact plays. If the Hokies' defensive front fails to put consistent pressure on Pavia, their secondary will be in trouble.
Vandy is coming off a tune-up win, while Virginia Tech is playing its second straight SEC opponent. I believe the Commodores will be up for the challenge, earning an important non-con win. In Pavia we trust!
Over/Under Vanderbilt vs. Virginia Tech
- Under 47.5 (5 Units)
I have concerns about both offensive lines in Saturday's SEC vs. ACC clash. The Hokies were underwhelming up front against the Gamecocks, who weren't as disruptive as they seemed. VT's offensive line was a problem last season, and it doesn't look like the unit has improved. The lack of explosive plays in the ground game and Drones' inefficiency through the air were red flags ahead of a matchup with an experienced Commodores defense.
The Dores' offensive line is also a question mark, as four of last year's starters are gone. Hokies defensive lineman Kemari Copeland is a disruptive presence, and the home team did an excellent job of creating pressure in 2024. They were also very sound fundamentally last week, in terms of wrapping guys up. Pavia will have his moments against the VT secondary, but I don't anticipate Vanderbilt or Virginia Tech scoring enough to push the total over 47 points.
