How will Virginia respond after suffering a setback?
Virginia (8-2 SU, 6-4 ATS, and 5-4-1 O/U) lost 16-9 to Wake Forest last Saturday. The Cavaliers are tied with Georgia Tech, Pittsburgh, and SMU for first place in the ACC football standings.
UVA has gotten the college football world's attention this season, racing out to a 5-0 start to ACC play, its best start to conference play since 2007. The Cavs' streak came to an end last weekend, as they failed to get into the end zone in a home loss to the Demon Deacons. The visitors gained only 203 total yards of offense, but returned a punt 88 yards in the third quarter for the game’s only touchdown. Virginia played most of the night without senior QB Chandler Morris, who was injured before halftime. The Cavaliers were a combined 4-for-17 on third and fourth down, and committed three costly turnovers.
“We got them to do something they normally don't do and turn the ball over,” Wake Forest coach Jake Dickert said.
Morris leads the UVA offense with 2,088 passing yards (66.7% CMP%), 12 touchdowns, and five interceptions. He has also rushed for 214 yards and four scores. Senior WR Trell Harris (43 receptions for 605 yards and four TDs) is the Cavaliers' top pass-catcher, while senior RB J'Mari Taylor (169 carries for 784 yards and 11 TDs) paces the ground game. Morris' playing status is up in the air for Saturday's game against Duke, but optimism is building that he could suit up. Backup Daniel Kaelin was ineffective in his absence, averaging 5.2 yards per pass and losing two fumbles.
The Cavs score 33.7 points per game (28th) and average 427.8 total yards (37th), including 243.5 passing yards (54th) and 184.3 rushing yards (39th). The Virginia defense surrenders 21.6 points (40th) and 329.6 total yards (39th) per game, including 215.0 passing yards (62nd) and 114.6 rushing yards (29th).
Virginia Cavaliers Football Injury Report: QB Chandler Morris, OG Kevin Wigenton, RB Noah Vaughn, and OL David Wohlabaugh are questionable to play against Duke.
Duke is a talented team, but will it finish strong?
Duke (5-4 SU, 4-5 ATS, and 7-2 O/U) lost 37-34 as 7.5-point favorites to Connecticut last Saturday. While the non-conference loss was unexpected, the Blue Devils are still tied for second place with a 4-1 record in ACC competition.
The Huskies outgained the Blue Devils 467-390, as UConn QB Joe Fagnano passed for 311 yards and three touchdowns in the competitive, back-and-forth affair. Both teams ran the football effectively, combining for over 300 yards on the ground, but a late fumble by Duke QB Darian Mensah cost the visitors. The sophomore passed for three touchdowns with two interceptions.
“The quarterback (Fagnano) is the real deal,” Blue Devils coach Manny Diaz said. "We were well aware of that. It was a loss that in all three phases that we made too many mistakes."
Mensah has passed for 2,794 yards this season, tossing 24 touchdowns with only four picks. He has completed 69.8 percent of his passes, averaging 8.7 yards per pass. Mensah's top receiving target is senior WR Cooper Barkate (50 receptions for 824 yards and five TDs), and freshman RB Nate Sheppard (100 carries for 657 yards and seven TDs) leads the Duke rushing attack.
The Blue Devils score 35.2 points per game (23rd) and average 452.4 total yards (22nd), including 312.9 passing yards (4th) and 139.6 rushing yards (88th). The Duke defense gives up 29.1 points (98th) and 406.4 total yards (103rd) per game, including 268.6 passing yards (128th) and 137.9 rushing yards (51st).
Duke Blue Devils Football Injury Report: LB Nick Morris Jr. and CB Kimari Robinson are questionable to play against Virginia.
Virginia vs. Duke Pick and Preview
Spread Pick for Virginia vs. Duke
- Blue Devils -4.5 (5 Units)
Duke's offense will be key to Saturday's game. The Blue Devils can score plenty of points, as long as they aren't shooting themselves in the foot with turnovers and penalties. That's been the thorn in their side in their losses this season. At home, I believe they'll be sharp and fundamentally sound, finishing their drives (9th nationally in points per quality drive) against a Cavaliers defense that struggles to get off the field without giving up scores (95th in points allowed per quality drive).
On the other side of the ball, I'm concerned with Virginia's ability to keep pace if Morris is sidelined or hindered by his injury. Duke's secondary has allowed too many third-and-long conversions recently, but Kaelin has been unimpressive in Morris' place (57% completion percentage in four games). Without a reliable passing game, the Blue Devils should be able to stack the box to stop the Cavs' run game, making the visitors too one-dimensional to back against the spread.
Over/Under Pick for Virginia vs. Duke
- Under 57.5 (4 Units)
Duke doesn't need to pile on the points to beat Virginia. The Cavaliers aren't an offensive juggernaut without a healthy Morris, and have scored 22 or fewer points in three of their previous four games. If their starting QB is out or significantly less than 100 percent, they'll lean on their defense to keep the score close. Virginia allows just 21 points per game and is +7 in turnover margin, with 16 takeaways (19th nationally). They will generate enough pressure on Mensah (21st in sacks) to prevent the Blue Devils' signal-caller from getting too comfortable, and they're reliable to get off the field on third down (7th in opponent third-down conversion rate).
The under is 4-0-1 in Virginia's last five games. I anticipate that trend will continue this week!
