Washington State is showing improvement
Washington State got back on track last weekend, ending a two-game losing streak with a 28-7 win over Toledo. Prior to that, the Cougars dropped tight contests to Ole Miss and Virginia by a combined total of five points. Those losses were signs of improvement as the Cougars were a 33-point underdog in their 24-21 loss at Ole Miss, and a 15.5-point dog in the 22-20 loss to Virginia. The Cougars now sit at 4-4 overall, trying to get closer to being in position for a bowl.

Offensively, Washington State hasn’t been explosive, ranking 123rd nationally in total offense (315.6 yards per game) and just 111th in scoring (21.5 points per game). Senior quarterback Zevi Eckhaus has thrown for 1,100 yards, nine touchdowns, and six interceptions, completing 65.2% of his passes. The Cougars rely heavily on Eckhaus not making mistakes and their defense, as their rushing attack ranks 128th in the FBS with just 102.9 yards per game.
On the other side of the ball, the Cougars rank 40th in total defense (336.3 yards allowed per game) and 37th against the pass (196.1 ypg). They’ve held opponents to just 24.6 points per game, ranking 74th nationally. Last week against Toledo, defense and special teams shined, as Washington won 28-7 with only a 321 to 299 total yardage advantage.
Looking for first win against an FBS team
Oregon State enters off a bye week, hoping extra rest helps turn the corner after a tough start to the season. The Beavers improved to 1-7 overall with a dominant 45-13 win over FCS Lafayette, but they lost their first seven games against FBS opponents. Interim coach Robb Akey takes over for Trent Bray, who was fired on October 12.
Offensively, Oregon State ranks 84th nationally in total yards (368.6 ypg) and just 112th in scoring (21.1 ppg). Former Texas Longhorn and Duke Blue Devil, Maalik Murphy is the team’s starting quarterback, but has had an underwhelming season. Murphy has 1,722 passing yards, nine touchdowns, eight interceptions, and is completing only 58.6% of his passes. The rushing attack has not been better as the team averages only 133.3 rushing yards (98th) per game, but they did some stat padding in the win over Lafayette.
On the defensive side, Oregon State hasn’t been any better, ranking 112th in total defense (412.6 ypg) and 121st against the pass (259.8 ypg). Against the run, their defense has been slightly better, but not great, allowing 152.9 yards per game (84th).
Washington State vs Oregon State Predictions
Spread Pick for Washington State vs. Oregon State
- Washington State -3.5 (5 units)
Oregon State still hasn’t beaten an FBS opponent this season, and even its most recent win came with red flags. The Beavers trailed Lafayette 13-10 at halftime before finally pulling away with a 35-0 second-half run. Time and time again this year, it’s felt like Oregon State was due to turn the corner, but it just hasn’t happened.
As for Washington State, they look like a team finding its stride. The Cougars showed toughness in narrow losses to Virginia and Ole Miss before dominating Toledo last week in a game they entered as a small underdog. Quarterback Zevi Eckhaus is settling in, and head coach Jimmy Rogers has this group improving week by week. Rogers, who is in his first season at Washington State, went 27-3 in two years at South Dakota State, including a national championship run at the FCS level.
Oregon State running back Anthony Hankerson rushed for 204 yards and four touchdowns against Lafayette, but he’s struggled to produce consistently against stronger competition, and interim head coach Robb Akey has been hesitant to give promising freshman Cornell Hatcher Jr. more carries. The Beavers have been a mess, and I have to roll with the better-coached team to get it done on the road, and that is Washington State.
Total Pick for Washington State vs. Oregon State
- Under 46.5 (4 units)
The total has dropped from 49.5 to 46.5, and I understand why. As little confidence as I have in Oregon State’s defense, I have even less faith in their ability to move the ball consistently. Washington State has allowed just 14 points per game over its last four contests, while Oregon State has averaged only 16.4 points per game in its last five against FBS opponents.
The Cougars don’t possess an explosive offense either, so expect them to be conservative with the ball and wait for Oregon State to make mistakes. I’ll take the under, as I don’t expect enough two-way scoring to push this one over the number.
