Washington State Looking to Earn Signature Win on the Road

Washington State snapped a two-game slide as they shut down Colorado State in their previous contest and look to carry that momentum with them after the bye. The Cougars improved to 3-2 overall on the season and they have not played a conference tilt this season. Against Colorado State, Washington State gave up a field goal on the Rams’ opening possession and then shut them down the rest of the game. The Cougars scored the game’s final 20 points of the game to roll to the win. Washington State owned a 347-334 advantage in total offense, held a 31:23 to 28:37 margin in time of possession and forced the game’s lone turnover in the game. Those numbers made up for the fact that the Cougars gave up 20 first downs while recording 19 in the victory.

The Cougars enter this game 69th in the nation in passing offense as they average 228.8 yards per contest through the air while they are a dismal 133rd in rushing offense with 77.8 yards per game on the ground. Washington State stands 111th in the FBS scoring offense as they average 20.6 points per game while they are 101st in scoring defense, as they allow an average of 28.8 points per game for coach Jimmy Rogers. Jaxon Potter is 67 of 95 passing for 604 yards with four touchdowns and three interceptions plus eight rushing yards. Zevi Eckhaus (49 of 75, 540 yards, four TD, two INT, 43 rush yards, two TD) and Julian Dugger (zero of three, rush TD) have seen action under center as well. Kirby Vorhees is the team’s top running back with 38 carries for 156 yards on the year. Leo Pulalasi (15 carries, 97 yards) is next in line on the ground. Tony Freeman leads the team with 21 receptions for 212 yards on the year. Joshua Meredith (19 catches, 255 yards, TD), Jeremiah Noga (10 grabs, 122 yards, TD) and Carter Pabst (five receptions, 108 yards) each have gone over the century mark in receiving yards. Jack Stevens is 11 of 11 on extra point attempts and eight of eight on field goal attempts with a long of 49 this season.

Tight end Hudson Cedarland (lower body) is questionable for this contest.

Rebels Trying to Maintain Lofty Ranking

Ole Miss is rested after a bye last week, giving them time to savor their win over LSU at home in their previous contest. The Rebels improved to 5-0 overall and stand 3-0 in SEC action on the year. They look to avoid looking ahead to next week’s road trip to Athens to face Georgia. Against LSU, Ole Miss trailed 7-0 early but reeled off 17 unanswered points to take a 10-point edge at the half. The Rebels didn’t let LSU closer than four in the second half and held on for the win. Ole Miss rolled up a 480-254 advantage in total offense, picked up 28 first downs while allowing 16 and owned a 32:22 to 27:38 margin in time of possession in the game. Those numbers helped the Rebels overcome 14 penalties for 109 yards and committing a pair of turnovers while forcing one takeaway in the game.

On the year, the Rebels are 6th in the nation in passing offense with 322.6 yards per game through the air and 25th in rushing offense with 208 yards per contest on the ground this season. Ole Miss is 14th in the FBS in scoring offense with 40.6 points per game and rank 33rd in scoring defense by allowing 18.8 points per contest. Trinidad Chambliss is 65 of 101 passing for 1,033 yards with five scores against one interception while ranking second on the team with 266 rushing yards and two scores. Austin Simmons (34 of 56, 580 yards, four TD, four INT, 69 rush yards, TD) has seen action as well. Sources say that Chambliss will get the start again here. Kewan Lacy leads the ground attack with 102 carries for 445 yards and eight scores. Logan Diggs (15 carries, 125 yards, two TD) and Damien Taylor (16 carries, 66 yards, TD) have seen work as well. Harrison Wallace III leads the team with 167 receptions for 361 yards and two scores. Deuce Alexander (17 catches, 313 yards, TD), Dae’Quan Wright (12 grabs, 279 yards, two TD), Cayden Lee (12 receptions, 226 yards, TD) and De’Zhaun Stribling (11 catches, 146 yards, TD) are all over the century mark in receiving yards on the year. Lucas Carneiro is 19 of 19 on extra point attempts and 11 of 12 field goal attempts with a long of 54 this year. Mike Baker is three of three on extra points and has not attempted a field goal this season.

Simmons (ankle) is still dealing with an injury that has pushed Chambliss into the starting role. Receiver depth is something to be concerned about as wide receivers Caleb Cunningham, Devin Price, Traylon Ray and Samari Reed along with tight end Luke Hasz (ankle) are each questionable here.

Washington State vs. Ole Miss Pick

Spread Pick for Washington State vs. Ole Miss

  • Ole Miss -31.5 (4 units)

Washington State did pick up a win in their previous game but that came on the heels of back-to-back losses to North Texas and Washington, where they were outscored 118-34, allowing 59 points in each contest. The Cougars have struggled offensively and enter this game with a -6 ratio in the takeaway/giveaway department. That’s a bad mix against an Ole Miss squad ranked in the top 15 in the nation in passing and scoring offense this season. LSU was the first team to hold the Rebels under 30 points. Washington State is just 101st in scoring defense this season and they’re going to be carved up here. Ole Miss wins this contest in a rout.

Over/Under Pick for Washington State vs. Ole Miss

  • Over 56.5 (4 units)

Washington State has seen the over post a 3-2 mark in their five games this season. The Cougars have split their two road games in relation to the total. They went over the total in their loss at North Texas while staying under in their win over Colorado State. Ole Miss has seen the over post a 3-2 mark this season. The Rebels went over the number in their first three games before recording a pair of unders in wins over Tulane and LSU. Ole Miss has scored at least 41 points in three of their five games and it should slice up a Washington State defense that was torched in games against the two top offenses it’s faced. This game winds up over the number, with the Rebels doing the heavy lifting.
