Week 5 of the 2025 college football season brings plenty of exciting matchups, including the non-conference showdown at Canvas Stadium in Fort Collins, CO, on Saturday night, so here’s the Washington State vs. Colorado State prediction and the latest team stats, news, and odds update.
Washington State meets Colorado State for the first time since September 2, 2023, when the Cougars trounced the Rams 50-24 as 8.5-point road favorites at Canvas Stadium. At the time, Washington State had Cameron Ward, the No. 1 pick from the 2025 NFL Draft, under center.
This time around, the Cougars are 4.5-point road underdogs with a total of 50.5 points. The kick-off is set at 7:30 PM ET, so let’s take a closer look at this Washington State vs. Colorado State prediction, one of our NCAAF picks for Week 5 of the 2025 NCAAF season.
Washington State hopes to snap a two-game skid
The Washington State Cougars (2-2; 1-3 ATS; 3-1 O/U) started their 2025 campaign with a couple of home wins over Idaho 13-10 and San Diego State 36-13. After that, the Cougars suffered a pair of heavy losses against North Texas 59-10 on the road and Washington 59-24 at home.

Sophomore QB Jaxon Potter was picked off three times in Week 3. The Cougars gave up 42 first-half points to North Texas and finished the game with just 64 rushing yards. Last week, senior Zevi Eckhaus got the starting call and threw for 277 yards and a couple of touchdowns and interceptions, as the Cougars’ defense fell apart once more.
In Week 4, Washington State lost the fourth quarter 28-0. The Cougars kept the ball in possession for 35:46 but lost the turnover battle 3-0. Their ground game was terrible, as the Cougars posted 27 carries for 28 yards.
“We’ve got to be able to execute the basic fundamentals of wrapping up and making plays, and tonight we failed at that,” Washington State coach Jimmy Rogers said after the Apple Cup.
Rogers stated in the press conference that Eckhaus will be the starter moving forward. Anyway, the Cougars will have to figure things out, especially their offensive line. Washington State tallies a paltry 57.8 rushing yards per game (135th in the country) and 2.0 yards per carry (also 135th).
Colorado State is coming off a tough loss
The Colorado State Rams (1-2; 2-1 ATS; 1-2 O/U) met Washington in Week 1, suffering a 38-21 defeat on the road. The Huskies outgained the Rams 509-265 in total yards, but Colorado State covered a 22.5-point spread.
The Rams bounced back in Week 2, outlasting Northern Colorado 21-17 at home. Colorado State was a massive 34.5-point fave, but the Rams barely outlasted the FCS foe. After a bye in Week 3, the Rams suffered a 17-16 home loss against UTSA.
Colorado State was a 5.5-point dog in Week 4. The Rams outgained the Roadrunners 407-345 in total yards and won the turnover battle 2-0, but it wasn’t enough. CSU had a chance to force overtime with 29 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter. Instead, they tried a two-point conversion and failed.
“Very hard-fought game. Our kids in our locker room played really hard. Very, very proud of our defense and some of the things we did,” CSU coach Jay Norvell said. “The end of the game, that was just my feeling once we got the penalty, and it was half the distance. I felt like we had a really good play that we could score and win the game. That was a gut feeling that I had. I’ll take the responsibility for that.”
Junior QB Brayden Fowler-Nicolosi has thrown for just 488 yards, a touchdown, and two interceptions so far this season. Sophomore signal-caller Jackson Brousseau went 10-of-12 for 78 yards and a touchdown in relief last week. According to Norvell, Brousseau will start against the Cougars.
Washington State vs. Colorado State Pick
Spread Pick for Washington State vs. Colorado State
- Washington State +4.5 (5 units)
Unlike the Cougars, the Rams lean on their ground game. Colorado State tallies 156.0 rushing yards (tied for 76th in the nation) and 191.7 passing yards (99th). However, the Rams have struggled to score thus far, and I don’t like their QB situation at all.
The Cougars can only play better defense than they did against North Texas and Washington. Washington State allows 35.3 points per game on just 329.3 total yards. On the other side, Colorado State surrenders 24.0 points per game on 359.0 total yards.
Washington State’s QB situation is far from ideal, but the Cougars’ main task is to get things going on the ground. The Rams allow 172.7 rushing yards per game and 4.4 yards per carry, so I expect the Cougars to keep it close in Week 5. Colorado State doesn’t look like a team capable of beating Washington State comfortably.
Over/Under Pick for Washington State vs. Colorado State
- Under 50.5 (5 units)
These two teams have struggled to move the ball so far this season. Colorado State looks like a better defensive unit than Washington State, but the Rams haven’t scored more than 21 points thus far.
The Rams will look to pound the rock in this matchup. Their passing game doesn’t breed confidence, so Jay Norvell decided to change the starting quarterback and give Jackson Brousseau a chance.
The Cougars will try to gain some yards on the ground, but they’ll continue to lean on their passing game. I’m backing Washington State to improve on the defensive side of the ball, so give me the under on the total.
