Can Wisconsin make a bold statement on the road?

Wisconsin (2-0 SU, 1-1 ATS, and 1-1 O/U) snuck past Miami-Ohio in its season opener and crushed Middle Tennessee State last week. The Badgers failed to cover as 17.5-point favorites against the Redhawks, but beat the Blue Raiders by 32 to cover. Can they keep the score closer than expected on the road versus an SEC powerhouse?

The Badgers pulled away in the second half to win 42-10 last week. They only led 14-10 at the half, as sophomore QB Danny O'Neil was making his first start for UW in place of senior Billy Edwards Jr., who sprained his knee in the second quarter of Week 1's game. Wisconsin outgained MTSU 456-241 in total yards, holding the visitors to 33 rushing yards on 28 attempts (1.2 YPC).

"We had some tough conversations at halftime, really trying to flip the script," O'Neil said. “We knew that we weren't playing to our standard."
The San Diego State transfer O'Neil has passed for 403 yards (76.1% CMP%) with four touchdowns and two interceptions this season. His top receiving targets are senior WR Vinny Anthony II, senior TE Lance Mason, and senior WR Jayden Ballard (all three have at least 100 receiving yards and one TD). Freshman RB Dilin Jones leads the Badgers on the ground with 24 carries for 109 yards and a touchdown. UW's defensive stars are junior LBs Christian Allegro and Tackett Curtis (22 combined tackles and two sacks) and senior S Preston Zachman (two INTs).

Wisconsin scores 29.5 points per game (66th) and averages 394.5 total yards (76th), including 235.5 passing yards (67th) and 159.0 rushing yards (75th). The Badgers have allowed three sacks (53rd) and committed three turnovers (83rd). The UW defense allows 5.0 points (6th) and 179.0 total yards (3rd) per game, including 145.5 passing yards (30th) and 33.5 rushing yards (4th). They have generated 12 tackles for loss (63rd) and forced three turnovers (35th).

Will Alabama fare better in its second test?

Alabama (1-1 SU, 1-1 ATS, and 2-0 O/U) fell flat in its season debut at Florida State but bounced back last week at home against Louisiana-Monroe. The Crimson Tide lost 31-17 at 13.5-point favorites against the Seminoles, but easily covered the 34-point spread in last week's 73-0 drubbing of the Warhawks. Can they secure a convincing win over a Big Ten team on Saturday?

Bama struggled to run the football in Week 1, gaining only 87 rushing yards on 29 carries (3.0 YPC). They also allowed 230 rushing yards, as the Seminoles scored four touchdowns on the ground. That wasn't a concern last week against a much less formidable opponent, as the Tide gashed the Warhawks for 212 rushing yards and held them under three yards per rush. They also racked up 12 tackles for loss and forced three turnovers.

“I think they just did a better job of every guy pursuing to the ball,” DeBoer said. ”(Takeaways) are a contagious thing, doesn’t matter who you’re playing. That was something I saw in practice. Happy to see it carry over.”
Junior QB Ty Simpson leads the Alabama passing attack with 480 yards, five touchdowns, and zero picks. His top receiving target is senior WR Germie Bernard (11 receptions for 213 yards and two TDs), and the run game is paced by freshman RB Kevin Riley (16 carries for 100 yards). Senior LB Deontae Lawson leads the Crimson Tide defense with ten tackles.

Alabama scores 45.0 points per game (24th) and averages 462.0 total yards (39th), including 312.5 passing yards (24th) and 149.5 rushing yards (87th). They have allowed three sacks (53rd) and committed no turnovers (1st). The Crimson Tide defense surrenders 15.5 points (50th) and 265.0 total yards (35th) per game, including 103.5 passing yards (10th) and 161.5 rushing yards (98th). Bama has generated 15 tackles for loss (32nd) and forced four turnovers (17th).

Spread Pick for Wisconsin vs. Alabama

  • Wisconsin +21 (4 Units)

The Badgers rank second nationally in penalties and tenth in time of possession. Those are x-factors in a matchup like this, especially in a hostile road environment. Wisconsin may get Edwards back for Saturday's game, but even if he can't suit up, O'Neil has been a reliable signal-caller in his place. The Badgers' defense has also been excellent at creating pressure up front and creating takeaways. Alabama might have dominated ULM, but that doesn't change what we saw from the Tide in their season opener.

Bet on the Badgers to sneak a cover in on the road this weekend against Alabama.

Over/Under Pick for Wisconsin vs. Alabama

  • Over 46 (4 Units)

Wisconsin can keep pace with Alabama long enough to make things interesting. That should get the most out of the Crimson Tide offense, especially Simpson. The young signal-caller impressed last week, completing all 17 of his passes for 226 yards and three touchdowns, plus a rushing TD. He'll be tested by the Badgers' front, but he has plenty of skill position players to get the ball out quickly to, including star receiver Ryan Williams, who is expected to play. There's enough offensive firepower on both teams to push the total over 46 points.
