Middle Tennessee struggles in big loss to FCS school
Middle Tennessee is 0-1 to start the season after a disappointing start to the new year. The Blue Raiders faced FCS Austin Peay and left with a poor loss. The Blue Raiders were picked No. 7 in the Conference USA preseason media poll. Last season, they finished with a 3-9 record.
The struggles from last year look to continue into the 2025 season unless a major turnaround occurs. Last week, Middle Tennessee lost 34-14 at home on Saturday, Aug. 30. The Blue Raiders went for 153 total yards in the game while they went 0-for-12 on third down. The Blue Raiders held the ball just for 21 minutes, opposed to Austin Peay’s 38 minutes.
Middle Tennessee’s Nicholas Vattiato threw for 104 yards and two touchdowns, but he was inefficient with a 15-for-36 throwing. Running back Jekail Middlebrook rushed for a team-high 48 yards on 11 carries.
"A lot of honesty with yourself," said Vattiato on the loss. ”I think the easy answer is get back to work, but we had no consistency in run or pass game. If you just look at it, you have to be honest with your personal performance, each and every one of us. Just being honest with ourselves is what's going to have to happen.”
It was a tough game for Middle Tennessee’s defense against Austin Peay. They allowed the FCS school to accumulate 343 yards on offense. The Governors threw for 193 yards and 150 rushing yards in the win. Middle Tennessee couldn’t get Austin Peay off the field as the Governors went 7-for-17 on third down as they also picked up 19 first downs.
Middle Tennessee was a 15-point favorite against Austin Peay. They obviously didn’t cover the spread as they lost the game. The under hit with the total set at 53.5 in last week’s game.
Wisconsin blanks Miami (OH) for opening win
Wisconsin enters Week 2 after sealing a close win and avoiding an upset last week. The Badgers went toe-to-toe against Miami (OH) at home in the season opener. They edged the MAC opponent to start the season with a win. Wisconsin was the No. 12 picked team in the Big Ten during the preseason media poll. This is head coach Luke Fickell’s third season at the helm and he has an overall record of 14-13 as he looks to bring the program back into the national spotlight.
The Badgers were almost in the national spotlight for the wrong reasons on Thursday, Aug. 28. They led Miami (OH) 3-0 at halftime before securing a 17-0 win. Wisconsin’s offense struggled to put the ball into scoring position, but they did put up the yards as they accumulated 353. They also went 8-for-16 on third down. But, they did turn the ball over once and punted twice after drives of 35 yards or more.
Quarterback Danny O’Neil threw for 120 yards on 12-for-19 passing. He secured the touchdown and the interception. Billy Edwards Jr. also tossed 68 yards on 6-for-13 passing. The majority of the offense came from Dilin Jones, who rushed for 73 yards on 14 carries.
Edwards hasn’t practiced this week after picking up a sprained knee in the game against Miami. The offense is handed over to O’Neil, who was the back-up going into last week’s game.
"I think that was really good for us, handling some adversity, with Billy going down,” Fickell said this week. ”I can tell you, it was definitely a different vibe than it had been in the past. There were things we obviously could get better at and need to get better at. I think offensively and defensively, I was not surprised. I was happy with where we continued to progress through the entire game. Special teams was the one [phase] that stood out to me, which was not the standard we want to be able to play."
Thanks to the defense, the offense didn’t have to a whole lot to get the win. The Badgers’ defense looked elite throughout against a RedHawks team picked No. 2 in the MAC. They gave up just 117 yards of offense and they went 0-for-9 on third down. Wisconsin also forced two turnovers in the win.
The Badgers did not cover the spread against Miami as they were 17.5-point favorites. The under did hit with it set at 41.5 thanks to Wisconsin’s defense pitching a shutout.
Middle Tennessee State vs. Wisconsin Pick
Spread Pick for MTSU vs. Wisconsin
Middle Tennessee +28.5
Wisconsin is going to get an easy win thanks to their defense. They dominated Miami (OH) last week as the RedHawks were nowhere near close to scoring points in the game. The Blue Raiders have a terrible offense and it showed against FCS Austin Peay. They couldn’t get first downs and they struggled for big plays.
But, Wisconsin will be starting their backup quarterback with their starter out with an injury. The offense for the Badgers was stop-and-start against Miami and they truly didn’t look like they could explode for many points. This line feels big for a Wisconsin team that struggled to score 17 points and I don’t see them scoring more than four touchdowns in this game. Even if they do, the defense will need to pitch another shutout, which will be hard. I don’t see it happening despite it being an easy win for Wisconsin.
Take Middle Tennessee to cover
Over/Under pick for Mid Tennessee State vs. Wisconsin
Under 45.5
Wisconsin’s offense will be led by their backup quarterback. He did lead the team to a win last week, but the offense didn’t look like it was taking off for many points which is why I don’t see it happening in this game either. The Badgers' defense is going to dominate Middle Tennessee, which means Wisconsin’s offense will be doing all of the heavy lifting for this total to hit over. I can’t rely on Wisconsin’s offense to lead the charge in this one.
Take the under on Saturday.
