Badgers shock Illinois 27-10
Wisconsin could have just given up the rest of the way with no chance to earn a bowl bid. They had lost seven of their last eight games and their only conference win was over Washington (13-10) on Nov 8. But on Nov. 22, things finally came together, especially on defense. Carter Smith completed 9 of 11 for 75 yards for the Badgers, but it was Darrion Dupree, who did the work on the ground, rushing for 131 yards and two TDs. The defense held the Illini to just 298 yards and 50 rushing yards. Wisconsin also had five sacks, led by Darryl Peterson's three.
The Badgers have had a disastrous season on offense, mainly due to injuries and lack of production at the quarterback position. Danny O'Neill (635 yds), Hunter Simmons (502yds), Billy Edwards (113 yds) and Carter Smith (181 yds) have all seen action at quarterback. Dupree leads in rushing with 312 yards and two TDs.
Wiscy ranks 135th in total offense (246.8ypg), but they rank 22nd against the run (108.6ypg), which should help them in this game.
Key Injuries for Wisconsin:
- QB D. O'Neil (undisclosed) is questionable.
- LB Mason Posa (undisclosed) is questionable. He leads the team with 49 tackles and is second with four sacks.
Gophers struggling at the end
Minnesota has lost two straight to Oregon (42-13) and Northwestern (38-35) in their last two games, while losing three of their last four. The offense got it done last week against the Wildcats as Drake Lindsey threw for 264 yards and four touchdowns. Javon Tracy caught three of those touchdown passes, but the defense failed, allowing 525 yards of offense to a mediocre Northwestern offense. They had a chance to tie the game at the end and send it to overtime, but Brady Denaburg missed a 40-yarder as time expired.
Defensively, they have some injuries with LB Devon Williams injured. He missed the Northwestern game (undisclosed) and is second on the team in tackles with 73 and has 2.5 sacks. CB John Nestor (38 tackles, 3 INTs), who also missed the last game. Statistically, Minnesota is allowing 115.2 yards per game on the ground (45th) and 216.2 yards per game in the air (107th).
Lindsey is having a productive year at quarterback with 2,145 passing yards, 15 TDs and six INTs. His top target is Le'Meke Brockington, who has 44 catches for 460 yards and four TDs.
Key Injuries for Minnesota:
- LB D. Williams (undisclosed) is questionable. Second leading tackle
- CB J. Neston (undisclosed) is questionable. Has 3 picks.
Spread Pick for Wisconsin vs. Minnesota
Wisconsin vs. Minnesota Prediction and Pick
- Wisconsin -1.5 (4 units)
The Badgers are playing better football at this point and while they don't have a lot to play for, they are playing their best football in the season. Minnesota is playing their worst football, having defeated a poor Michigan State team on Nov. 1 by just three at home. Linsdey is a good passer, but it won't be easy to throw in that weather. The Badgers have covered their last four games, and their offense will show up against a defense that has been falling apart, partially due to injuries.
- Under 37.5 (4 units)
Wiscy has gone under in five straight games and seven of eight. The Badgers, before Illinois, scored just 47 points in their previous seven games. The weather is going to have a negative impact on scoring points in the 25 degree temperatures and potential snow.
