CJ Carr looks to lead the Irish over the Orange

Tonight's Wisconsin Badgers vs Notre Dame Fighting Irish picks bring the Shamrock Series to Lambeau Field, where Notre Dame is favored by roughly three touchdowns. The Irish return quarterback CJ Carr and one of the country's deepest defenses, while Wisconsin begins the season with Old Dominion transfer Colton Joseph at quarterback and significant turnover across the roster. The spread has barely moved from its opener, but the total has been pressured downward from 47.5 toward 46.5 at several sportsbooks. That lower-scoring direction matches the matchup, especially with Wisconsin facing offensive-line uncertainty against Notre Dame's front.

Wisconsin Badgers vs Notre Dame Fighting Irish Preview

Notre Dame enters the season with championship expectations because the Irish bring back unusual continuity at the positions that matter most. CJ Carr returns after throwing for 2,741 yards, 24 touchdowns and six interceptions in his first season as the starter. He finished among the national leaders in passing efficiency and now has another offseason in Mike Denbrock's system.

The defense may be even more important to this matchup. Notre Dame returns an elite secondary led by Leonard Moore and has replenished the defensive front through the transfer portal. The Irish were already strong against both the pass and run last season, and their ability to create pressure without sacrificing coverage makes this a difficult opener for a Wisconsin offense introducing a new quarterback.

Colton Joseph is the most important new piece for the Badgers. The Old Dominion transfer was the Sun Belt Offensive Player of the Year last season after throwing for 2,624 yards and 21 touchdowns while rushing for more than 1,000 yards and 13 scores. His mobility gives Wisconsin a way to create offense even when the pocket breaks down, but the competition jump is substantial. Notre Dame's speed and coverage discipline will be unlike anything Joseph saw on a weekly basis in the Sun Belt.

Wisconsin also enters with significant roster churn. The Badgers added more than 30 transfers, including running back Abu Sama III and several defensive contributors. Luke Fickell has more athletic depth than he did during the lowest points of last season, but integrating that many new players against a top-five opponent is a difficult way to begin the year.

The offensive line is the biggest immediate concern. Emerson Mandell and Kevin Heywood have dealt with injuries throughout the preseason and entered game week with uncertainty around their availability. That matters more than a normal Week 1 absence because Notre Dame's defensive front can force Joseph into quick decisions. Wisconsin needs to establish enough of a rushing threat to keep the Irish from treating every second-and-long as a passing down.

Notre Dame has injuries of its own. Receiver Quincy Porter is out, while several offensive and defensive linemen are unavailable and linebacker Kyngstonn Viliamu-Asa entered the weekend questionable. The Irish have enough depth to remain a heavy favorite, but those absences reduce some of the appeal of expecting maximum offensive explosiveness in the opener.

The market has been remarkably stable on the side. Notre Dame opened around -20.5 and remains close to that number, with some books reaching -21 or -21.5. The more meaningful move is the total. A 47.5 opener has been bet down to 46.5 at many sportsbooks, although 47.5 remains available in some places.

That move reflects the basic scoring challenge for Wisconsin. The Badgers averaged only 12.8 points per game last season and now face a stronger defense while introducing Joseph and multiple new pieces. Wisconsin should improve offensively over the course of the year, but the opener is a difficult place to assume immediate efficiency.

Matchup Breakdown

Carr gives Notre Dame the cleanest quarterback advantage of the Sunday slate. He already knows the offense, has shown he can create explosive passes without a high turnover rate and will operate behind a line with far more continuity than Wisconsin's front. The Irish do not need him to force the action. They can take what Wisconsin's defense gives them and rely on field position.

Joseph's legs are Wisconsin's best counter. Designed runs and scrambles can create first downs even when receivers are covered, and the Badgers should use that dimension to avoid long dropback sequences. The problem is that Notre Dame has the speed at linebacker and safety to limit quarterback rushing better than most of Joseph's 2025 opponents.

The total is also helped by Wisconsin's defense. Linebackers Mason Posa and Cooper Catalano return after strong freshman seasons, and the Badgers have added experience around them. Wisconsin may struggle to score, but it has enough defensive talent to prevent Notre Dame from treating the opener like a four-quarter track meet.

Game state favors a slower second half. If Notre Dame leads by 17 or 20 entering the fourth quarter, Marcus Freeman has little reason to expose Carr to unnecessary hits or reveal more offense than required. Long Irish rushing possessions would make it difficult for Wisconsin to create enough late scoring to threaten the total.

Turnovers remain the major risk. A Joseph interception deep in Wisconsin territory or a defensive touchdown can push Notre Dame into the 30s quickly. The Badgers need to make the Irish earn points over full drives and avoid the short-field sequence that turns a low total into a blowout.

Game Thesis: Notre Dame should control the matchup because it owns major advantages in quarterback continuity, defensive speed and line play. Wisconsin's new quarterback has enough rushing ability to create occasional problems, but the Badgers face a difficult protection matchup and are unlikely to sustain enough drives to force the Irish into an aggressive scoring pace. The most coherent expectation is Notre Dame winning comfortably in a game that stays below the upper 40s.

Wisconsin Badgers vs Notre Dame Fighting Irish Best Bet - Total: Under 47.5 (-110)

Under 47.5 is the preferred wager because it provides the best number still available in a market that has already moved lower. Wisconsin's offense has to prove it can protect Joseph and generate explosive plays against one of the country's best defenses. A projected Badgers total around 10 to 13 points leaves Notre Dame needing a large offensive performance before the game reaches 48.

The line move should be respected. At 46.5, the Under is still playable but has less room for a defensive score or a late touchdown. At 47.5, a 34-13 result still cashes, while the same score pushes a 47. The extra point matters.

Notre Dame's own injury list also makes the lower-scoring side more attractive than expecting an offensive showcase. The Irish have the depth to win without several unavailable players, but the most likely strategy is efficient rather than reckless.

Wisconsin Badgers vs Notre Dame Fighting Irish Spread Pick: Notre Dame -20.5 (-105)

Notre Dame -20.5 is the secondary side because Wisconsin's offensive-line concerns create a real path to a three-touchdown margin. The Irish can cover without scoring into the 40s if the defense holds the Badgers near 10.

The price becomes less attractive above -21.5. Wisconsin's defense should be good enough to prevent a complete runaway, and Joseph's mobility gives the Badgers some late backdoor potential. The preferred number is -20.5.

Prediction: Notre Dame 31, Wisconsin 10
